U.S. wasn’t fully prepared for radiation risks following Japan earthquake, top general says, Stars and Stripes by Seth Robson, July 27, 2011:

U.S. Forces Japan has declined Stars and Stripes’ requests to release the levels of radiation or toxic substances detected in areas where U.S. personnel worked during Operation Tomodachi. The military also has not released levels of radiation detected on servicemembers’ clothing and equipment. […]

The military has already done “internal monitoring” of radiation levels inside the bodies of 7,700 personnel who worked in parts of the disaster zone closest to the damaged power plant, including those who flew over the disaster zone, [U.S. Pacific Command’s top surgeon Rear Adm. Michael H. Mittelman] said. […]

Mittelman said that among the 2 percent of servicemembers (about 154 individuals) with elevated internal radiation levels the highest readings were about 25 millirems [250 microsieverts], equivalent to the dose that they would receive from 2 1/2 chest X-rays. […]

How disingenuous can you get? There is no excuse for an army officer to admit he wasn’t smart enough to know radiation could be dangerous to troops. The US bombed the Japanese! Who else should know better?

Let’s see how much plutonium they eventually “find” on the USS Ronald Reagan troops.

    • The SS Reagan and it’s fleet got the hell out of dodge the minute the alarms sounded, but to send in service men into a know contaminated zone, heads should roll !!
Unless it was a planned experiment !!
Then there will be NO head rollings !!
Just as men put in harms way in testings in Nevada !

One has to wonder if some of these service members were on the SS Reagan and it’s fleet ??

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and other US Navy ships in the waters off the quake zone in eastern Japan were repositioned after the detection of a low-level radiation plume from the troubled Fukushima nuclear plant located 100 miles away.

According to 7th Fleet Commander and Spokesman Jeff Davis, the ships were moved away from the downwind direction of the plant as a precautionary measure on Sunday.

Military Crew Said to Be Exposed to Radiation, but Officials Call Risk in U.S. Slight
        March 13, 2011
The Pentagon was expected to announce that the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is sailing in the Pacific, passed through a radioactive cloud from stricken nuclear reactors in Japan, causing crew members on deck to receive a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials said Sunday.
The officials added that American helicopters flying missions about 60 miles north of the damaged reactors became coated with particulate radiation that had to be washed off.

There was no indication that any of the military personnel had experienced ill effects from the exposure. …

    • Yes. This people who go on saying so and so got up to 250 microSv internal dose as if thats still somewhat tolerable than say 300 microSv are just off track. Just one track of plutonium lodged in a being is enough to give a dose to a cell of 1 Sv! Dose has no meaning internally boss. get this get this get this. And if you consider the DNA inside the dose to it will be even 1 million Sv! Good lord! 1000000 Joules per kg delivered in 10^-17 sec is 10^23 W or 10^14 GW! The electical capacity of the world is 5000 GW! Unsafe at any internal dose certainly and even externally!

Same old stunt – comparing internal radiation with external radiation from X-rays.

As to not releasing the levels, it is probably a matter of “national security” and as such has to be classified.

The question is: Which nation og whose security?

“elevated” internal radiation that would mean that the “particulates” of strontium, ceasium, xeon amd iodine gases… the iodine 137 gas i believe would travel into the blood stream from skin or they eat contaminated produce or they breathed in particultes and gases… the guys at chernobyl were faced with more of the shorter lived but more volatile isotopes too! they can tell what they were contaminated with using the advanced tests in the usa! but one could possibly surmise the main componds like iodine xeon ceasium and strotonium….peace

    Breaking News…

    http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2011/07/radioactive-compost-has-already-spread.html

A resident in Akita Prefecture alerted the authorities when the bag of leaf compost that he purchased from a local garden/home center measured high in radiation with his portable survey meter. The authorities tested the content of the bag, and it had 11,000 becquerels/kg of cesium.

At the garden/home center (2 locations) the air radiation 1 meter from the pile of the leaf compost bags measured as high as 0.48 microsievert/hr.

According to Yomiuri Shinbun (7/27/2011), these bags were packed in Tochigi Prefecture, and 20,000 bags have already been sold in Akita Prefecture alone.

Shimotsuke Shinbun (local Tochigi paper; 7/27/2011) reports that Tochigi Prefecture tested the leaves that went into the leaf compost bags, and they found 72,000 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium. The leaves were collected in the northern Tochigi in April, and was sold outside the prefecture from mid June to early July.

        xdrfox:

ONLY revolution will work to get the correct and appropriate things done in a timely way–the powers that be hope you will forget and gradually come to believe preposterous lies if they are repeated often enough by pretty Ms. Kobiyashi in NHK. Otherwise, expect a wimpering, slinking away decrease in interest by “officials” in your questions and appropriate concerns. Little by little ANY efforts from the scum, at the top, responsible for your children’s collective irradiation (poisoning!) and dramatically shortened lives, will end–this is their entire– plan. I guarantee you! The scum at the tops of your own (and U.S.everywhere) hierarchies, corporate/military/covert/nuclear power industry all hope you’ll all just go away…will you please politely stop bothering them. They wish to enjoy their jobs which are all about not dealing with reality and helping the masses that can take THEIR lives, believe the lies they peddle. Nuclear power is always built on lies.

Civilian commercial nuclear power plants are always unsafe. No commercial nuclear power plant is in any way, shape or form ever going to be safe. There would be no profit at all possible for any sort of investor if commercial civilian nuclear power generation were even remotely safe. Will you and other adults in Japan allow such pathetic, parasitic, and narcissistic cowards to slink into the shadows defending nuclear power and even attempting its promotion at your childrens’ expense? Do the Japanese care as little for their children as U.S. mindless masses, in general, do for their own–In the U.S. 99% of people believe all the lies about Fukushima and think it’s something in the past! That took about one month to accomplish for our slinking, arrogant, murderous scumbags at the top! Do the Japanese, like U.S. citizens, also wallow in the intellectual squalor and naivete, which a lack of basic critical thinking skills creates? Will the Japanese continue to, in the majority, defend the murderous and stupid prioritization of putting economics over doing the right thing in cataclysmic nuclear crisis as the filthy parasitic cowards at Tepco, GE, the Japanese and American executive branches admonish the rapidly poisoned Japanese people to do in this not so long “goodnight”?

The right thing is to pull the guillotines out, sharpen their blades–I don’t mean this figuratively. Start killing off Tepco executives from the top. Proceed to Prime Minister Kan. Follow up then with your most pro-nuclear Diet members. Do not start LOW on the hierarchy. The little person is you. Aim for the top. That’s where ALL the power is until you take it away! Of course, parents of children with the cooperation of the technical giants in the industry can do a better job than politicians and executives worried about MONEY. This is what the cowardly scum at the top hope you will do. The little person, worker representative is not the responsible one in a decision making hierarchy where big dollars are involved; No, it is the TOP, focus your ire and ACTION–and there must be this, at the TOP!!!

Use the guillotine until these spineless insects get the message that the people of Japan are not cowards. You who are being deeply, daily irradiated are in your millions; they are only in the dozens. Make it clear that those at the top will pay for every Japanese child they murder by radionuclide through their actions or lack of action.

You can handle the truth! Without the truth about what’s happening, nothing will change! Your children will continue to be irretrievably poisoned and will be dying in ever rising numbers, this I guarantee, as a crescendo from the universe demanding that you do the right thing! What is the right thing? Chop from the top! Why? What’s the truth? The truth is, of course, obvious that Fukushima is worse than Chernobyl by many dozens to thousands of times and, under the current horrifyingly stupid decisions of cowardly, greedy and criminally culpable leaderships, Japanese children are being sacrificed as if there lives were garbage, like leaves of radioactive waste turned to compost emitting 77,000 bq/kg of radiation.

The richest and highest in status quo hierarchies of power will protect themselves. How? Always by lying and always by deferring blame. They’ll keep you from revolting by dividing, and conquering. How many dead babies, children and other civilians of Japan will it take to have solidarity to rise together against these weak, cowardly ghouls? How can they be made to the tell the truth? Drag them into the streets. Do NOT settle for the “representative”. Make these and not poor homeless beggars from the street do the clean-up work with the same uniforms and lack of protection they are giving to the temporary workers. Even in the midst of crisis, these scum at the top, outrageously, are providing no labor protections whatsoever, proportionate to the risks.

In the United States, there is a nearly complete news blackout about Fukushima for at least the past two months. Working people’s CHILDREN in Japan are being sacrificed so that spineless turds at the tops of our nuclear power parasitic cataclysmically poisonous hierarchies can save face and their very fat paychecks. They must be stopped. They must be stopped now! They must be stopped and their power replaced by civilian control of this clean-up process by any means necessary and IMMEDIATELY, for any progress to be realized in protecting your CHILDREN.

Any president of ANY nuclear power plant in Japan that even begins to say that they are going to restart, particularly of those plants that had ANY problem related to the quake, should, by the PEOPLE, be dragged out into the street and beaten until they change their minds. Is there time to allow these moronic clowns to keep repeating the same stupid mistakes? CHOP FROM THE TOP, and do it now, as your children are being chopped by radionuclide contamination as if by the “TOP’S” own hand, when you do not stop them.

President’s Cancer Panel: Environmentally caused cancers are ‘grossly underestimated’ and ‘needlessly devastate American lives.’

“The true burden of environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated,” says the President’s Cancer Panel in a strongly reported report that urges action to reduce people’s widespread exposure to carcinogens. The panel today advised President Obama “to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our nation’s productivity, and devastate American lives.” …

In United States about 41 percent of all Americans still will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and about 21 percent will die from it, according to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER Cancer Statistics Review. In 2009 alone, about 1.5 million new cases were diagnosed.

    Facts and Fictions
There are a number of fictions about DU. UMRC, would like to respond to a few.
Fiction: Uranium is ubiquitous in nature and therefore is no cause for concern.
Fiction: DU is not harmful; it is depleted in U235.
Fiction: Alpha particles can’t penetrate clothes and skin.
Fiction: Governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) have tested for DU.
Fiction: Uranium usage levels is too low to be a concern or merit investigation.
Fiction: There are no serious effects from low-level exposure to Uranium.
Fiction: DU weapons dust soon dissipates and does not travel far from the explosion site.
Fiction: Uranium is ubiquitous in nature and we are exposed daily. There is no cause for concern.
Fact: Uranium is present in nature in trace amounts, about 3 parts per million (ppm) by weight. It takes about 5 tonnes of dry soil or rock to produce 1 teaspoon of what is called “natural uranium”. It is “natural” in that is has the isotopic proportions that exist in nature. However, what is “unnatural” is when uranium is presented in concentrated quantities. In these concentrations of radioactivity its effect on human health and the environment become dangerous.
When uranium is exposed to the natural chemical action of the environment it can become solublized and can then migrate into the water supply. Uncontained uranium waste is a problem when left in the open as it oxidizes. This is the case all over the world in nuclear waste repositories.
Uranium is most dangerous when it burns and is aerosolized as happens when it is used in weapons.
