Title: Veteran nuclear experts regret Fukushima crisis, but still see need for reactors
Source: Mainichi Daily News
Date: Jan 26, 2012

[...] In late March 2011, soon after the outbreak of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, an email was sent to about 30 leading figures in nuclear circles in Japan. Attached was a file titled: “Urgent proposals in connection with the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant,” which began with the sentence: “As figures who have been promoting the peaceful use of nuclear power, we find this accident deeply regrettable, and at the same time we deeply apologize to the public.”

The proposals were written mainly by three people — Shojiro Matsuura, former head of the Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC); Kenji Sumita, former acting NSC chief; and Shunichi Tanaka, former acting chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of Japan. Some nuclear experts rejected the proposals, asking why they had to apologize. But the proposals were eventually undersigned by 16 leading nuclear experts. [...]

The rare proposals made by the experts were released at a news conference on April 1 — the day when many Cabinet ministers shed their disaster working uniforms and once again wore suits to mark the start of full-fledged reconstruction work. In sharp contrast to the Prime Minister’s Office, which was trying to appear and sound calm, Tanaka sternly commented: “Reactor cores have melted to a considerable extent. I never predicted that we would cause the public so much trouble. We are responsible for promoting nuclear power.” [...]

Here are a few quotes from the ‘experts’

  • “We have not applied the lessons learned from the JCO accident in the space of 10 years. We’ve heard utility companies saying, ‘What that backcountry company did has nothing to do with us. If we took measures, we would also be seen as being irresponsible.” -Kenji Sumita, former acting NSC chief
  • “Atomic power is so wonderful. The global competition for energy has started, so we can’t talk about getting rid of nuclear power plants.” -Hideki Nariai, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan

Mainichi wraps up the article quite well

These are the characteristics of the “nuclear village” that the veteran nuclear experts pointed out with deep regret in connection with the Fukushima nuclear crisis. The question remains as to whether these characteristics can be altered in the future.

We deeply apologize… Yet Atomic Power is so wonderful.

Instead of apologizing why don’t you get your fat asses over to the Fukusall site and help with the clean-up you IDIOTS!

They have to be in denial. Brainwashing is very hard to combat and change. These people have had been brainwashed for so long that they have dual conflicting values now. They know how horrible it is, yet they still advocate for it. I honestly believe they have been brainwashed and become dependent on the industry. What would help is helping them. Help change their jobs to renewables. That way they become dependent on the REAL CLEAN energy. (Clean as in: Won’t destroy entire ecosystems like oil or nuke or nat gas) Does anyone here believe that co2 is a main factor in global warming?

    Apologies are not good enough..
This set knows what’s up…GAME OVER
    They knew then..they know now…
Are you telling me they don’t know the spent fuel pools are on fire.

    They don’t understand …meltdown …corium production…etc?
They of all people.. understand the effects of radiation …in all aspects….
Why apologize?… the socially correct thing to do?
These so-called scientists are committing Crimes Against Humanity.

I’m thinking the apologies are coming because they’re on fire. I know its from March but these things get recycled for when they are handy.

It’s like double speak. I honestly believe they have been brainwashed because of their dual values. They are on both sides of an issue a baby could see is disastrous and irresponsible. Same as Monbiot, although the money could just be brainwashing him. I think he honestly believes nuclear fission is an environmentally safe and clean energy.

“The global competition for energy has started,” no, it continues, but it IS getting serious.
    FEW – Food, Energy, Water.
Competition for these has, is, will, lead to the usual consequences – war among them – without considerable re-thinking of how – and for whos benefit – we structure society.

To “maintain the current standard of living” in Japan and the rest of the first world means maintaining the currently
dominant economic structure, means maintaining massive pollution, destitution and misery elsewhere, means maintaining the illusion that our brief era of relatively cheap and easy to secure energy financed lifestyles can be maintained in a finite world of dwindling resources and ever-harder to find and extract fossil fuels.

We’d better come to grips with different ideas about sustainable civilisation or the world will come to look and be like present-day Haiti – an environmentally devastated, oppressive nightmare along a resource-depleted and energy-scarce road to something even worse.

That’s not to say we don’t have options. It is to say that having the freedom to exercise them intelligently will take…hmm…many folks don’t want to see the “R” word…let’s just say…concerted action…soon…

If it is so WONDERFUL, take your expert asses to Fukushima Daiichi and get into the reactors to clean them up!!! You can breath in all the radioactive atomic particles you want. Then you can have all the wonderful “radiance” in your lungs. Please take your FAMILIES with you also.

All these experts and pro-nuke people should be FORCED to live beside the nuclear power plants. Then we can see them eat what they preach.

These horrible brainwashed, insane, intentionally or unintentionally, most likely the latter, but most definitely de facto psychopathic nuclear “experts” very pointedly, to me, fail to mention Kashiwazaki Kariwa, the world’s largest nuclear power plant located across Honshu from Fukushima on the Sea of Japan. Here in 2007 there was a “partial” meltdown and of course is still, like TMI, being dealt with to this day. Kashiwazaki Kariwa was built, it turns out, on top of two CONTINENTAL tectonic plate boundaries (a different combination than 311 Tohoku), and is a convergence fault zone. On July 16, 2007, KK experienced a 6.6-6.8 quake. The ground acceleration was at least 4x beyond design tolerances. The nuclear establishment, of course, particularly due to it’s covert military roots and specious “necessity” myth origins of the 1950′s, cannot be trusted by the people. The consequences for trusting the establishment at this time are long, pathetic, lingering degenerative illnesses increasingly experienced by everyone. No one is immune. The status quo is insufficient and the time we have to deal with Fukushima and other tragedies is quite short. There are aging reactors all over the planet (nearly 1000). Time to do something! It is time to unseat the leaderships of both our governments and the managers of the nuclear industry en toto.

@Pallas89juno: agree with ninety-nine-percent of your rant, except for the suggestion that we “unseat” these governments.

For a host of reasons, that’s not going to happen.

First, they’re not “our” governments. They no longer even pretend to represent the indigenous populations. We have no access to them or their power.

Second, they long-ago anticipated that the masses would want them removed. (They’ve been at this for a long – long – time.) They spent the last half-century putting into place the means to suppress any reaction on our parts. Put simply, they’re waiting for a violent response!

However, for all their chicanery, they never anticipated an event that would – effectively – undermine the participation of others, within their ranks. We are – all – to become victims of this mismanagement. Due to their hubris, the future of humanity has been wrested from their hands. As if in the final days of the Reich, the incessant pounding is being heard in the far distance, intermingled with words of deluded self-assurance.

Welcome to a new world order…that will not be of – their – making…

      PJ,
+Infinity. ‘Wish I had the symbol on my keyboard so I could use it here. Agree there must be a sea change in govt. and industry. This will (obviously!) not be easy to accomplish. We are at an historic crossroads in the history of humanity.
