34 spots top Chernobyl evacuation standard, The Yomiuri Shimbun, August 31, 2011:
[... The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry] ministry checked soil contamination levels in about 2,200 locations around the nuclear plant.
The spot with the highest concentration of cesium 137 as of June 14–about 15.45 million becquerels per square meter–was in Okumamachi, a town in the heart of the no-entry zone. When levels of cesium 134 were added to the measurement, the level of the two radioactive isotopes reached about 29.46 million becquerels at that location. [...]

I don’t post much but I garner info. everyday here and elsewhere such as the Physics Forum.
http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=480017
I try to balance the info. here against science and a different point of view.
In summary, and in layman’s terms…… I believe the disaster is a world changing event. I fear following generations will reap the results of our generations folly with splitting the atom to boil water.
Surly, other “plants” world wide will become the victims of natural disasters or negligence of proper maintenance.
My glass is always half full but I’m afraid the halfway point is dropping.
I see no way to stop the Fukushima radiation releases for the near future. They don’t even know where the cores are and couldn’t get near them if they did. I think most on this forum do know they are in the ground and a circus tent won’t help the Pacific ocean and Japan’s ground water. Let’s not even get into burning the waste in incinerators. It’s just crazy.

I agree 100%.
A plastic tent aka greenhouse? duh! ???
I also do not believe now, as I did untill the last week or so that they even can fix it ever.
I hate to sound so doomsday about it, but their actions demand it, along with my common sense.
They just keep doing stuff over and over that demand you to stand back, take a deep breath, and look objectively. When you do that, it is much more clear that they don’t have a snow balls chance in hail of fixing this thing, in 6 months or 6 years.
I just want people to know, the Japanese, so they can make the decision to leave or stay, and the other people in other countries that will be effected by it at this point.

Welcome aboard Tuni. Ticket upgraded from stowaway to first class passenger
It’s encouraging to know that someone else of obvious integrity in their decision making process eventually reached the same conclusions as many of us here. There are definitely those amongst us who were either anti-nuke to begin with or polarised immediately the news came out on a ‘gut instinct’, that’s ok too but we need all varieties if we are to maintain a credible discussion.
We even have a few pro-nukes, or at least leaning that way, and they generally keep us honest and force us to be a little more thorough in our investigations. I don’t think anyone here wants to promote false or misleading information, nor do they want to see their predictions or assessments validated. But when things go pear shaped like this it’s usually best to be safe rather than sorry.
I think you’ll find we are all watching the level dropping in that glass, hoping beyond hope that it’s just an optical illusion.

a link to comparison maps between Chernobyl and fukushima! A bit different to other links posted but the figures (as they are) match up well… interesting way to express the data…
“A little Elaboration on my Cesium-137/134 Fallout Color-Legends “Translation Legend”
Posted on May 20, 2011 by Michaël V.B.
I’ve come across 4 maps that I wanted to share: 1 about the ongoing Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear catastrophe (that started March 11, 2011), 3 about the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. In order to be able to REALLY compare both accidents, I thought the fallout maps might tell a story, so I tried to “translate” the vastly different legends and color in the maps in the differently color-coded maps. I put the legends side by side (vertically, with the highest radioactivity measurements at the top). “

The Pompeii of the Nuclear Age

Part 3: Part III: A Dramatic Increase in Birth Defects
“Doctors speculate that Grisha and other children with similar symptoms are the victims of a growth disorder caused by a genetic malfunction of the pituitary gland. Cases of this type of genetic disorder were occasionally reported in the region before the nuclear disaster.
But according to the foundation “Children for Chernobyl,” in the past decade doctors have seen a dramatic increase in deformities among young patients from parts of Belarus and the Ukraine that were exposed to high levels of radiation — including deformed limbs, missing ears, harelips and feet with up to eight toes. To draw conclusions on the possible causes of these defects, doctors must review the children’s medical histories to determine where and when they were born.”
