Title: Muttonbird numbers lower
Source: Radio New Zealand
Date: Apr. 30, 2012
The Japanese nuclear meltdown may have reduced New Zealand’s muttonbird population.
A study near Auckland has found a third [...] failed to return this summer after spending the southern winter in their northern hemisphere base near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Department of Conservation researcher Graeme Taylor says the birds that did return were in a poor condition. [...]

NZ muttonbirds tested for Fukushima radiation
Dec 22, 2011
New Zealand muttonbirds are being studied to see if they were affected by radiation from Japan’s damaged nuclear power plant.
Samples are being taken from the birds as part of the research into the effects of radiation from the Fukushima plant, which was severely damaged following the earthquake and tsunamis which hit the country in March.
The research aims to determine the degree to which the mutton bird population was exposed to radiation.
Experts have said the Fukushima disaster was responsible for the largest single release of radioactivity into the ocean, threatening wildlife and fisheries in the region.
Millions of the birds, known as sooty shearwaters, come to this
country to breed …

Obviously, more than 33%. (just a guess)
It WILL become clear. Not sure exactly when. There's no way around it.

Farmland bird numbers fall across Europe August 24, 2011
"Among some of the most endangered farmland species was the grey partridge which has seen numbers decline by over two thirds throughout Europe and by as much as 90% in the UK…."
http://wildlifenews.co.uk/2011/farmland-bird-numbers-fall-across-europe/
"The percentage of yearlings among the 16 species with samples for both normal (< 0.05 µSv/h) and higher radiation levels (≥ 0.05 µSv/h) was 43.32% at radiation levels < 0.05 µSv/h, while it was 73.02% at radiation levels ≥ 0.05 µSv/h. Adult survival rates estimated from these age ratios did not differ significantly from published adult survival rates at radiation levels < 0.05 µSv/h, but did differ significantly from adult survival rates estimated from age ratios at radiation levels ≥ 0.05 µSv/h (Table 1). In addition, the observed minus the expected survival rates from areas with < 0.05 µSv/h and ≥ 0.05 µSv/h differed from each other (paired t-test, t = 3.85, d.f. = 15, P = 0.0016). Restricting these analyses to species with a sample size greater than ten did not change any of these conclusions…"

The dolphins appeared in one of Carlin's political cartoons in La Republica of Peru a couple of weeks back, breasting a mudslide of political problems* currently facing the government. So, acknowledged, if not explained.

*It appears that the dead dolphins have equal prominence to the Camisea Gas Field and Conga Gold Mine protests so must be quite big news.
[Disclaimer: this item included as an observation not in any way critical of the current government and President of Peru with whom I have every sympathy: they face a trajectory of great difficulty to accomplish the objectives they have chosen].

arclight,
I wrote the man that is doing the necropsy's on the dolphins a few weeks back when the article first appeared, I ask him if he though it could be radiation, He wrote back and said NO WAY, the dolphins swim up and down the coast of south America and North America !
I wrote him back and said, but the fish they eat come across the Pacific from Japans waters !
He has not wrote back yet !
You think they would from the start take readings, anyway with the Pelicans now, most likely a food source I would think !

the uk has stopped testing and in norway no one has heard of any testing being done (its has a small close knit population so they would know??) the background radiation has largely gone up all over the whole globe in patches and the worst of the daichi contamination is likely to occour over the next 2 springs as it peaks before starting to leech out, and this is the best case scenario as you would appreciate (given for reasons of sanity
)
the corporations around the globe have too much to lose if the truth got out.. big agriculture etc would be hit hard.. southern hemisphere countries with low contamination would become the new powerhouses for food.. largely run by wise inscrutable chinese farmers!!
should be interesting!!
power shift about to occour!!

From that article: "A separate study by Ngai Tahu and Te Papa of 30 chicks from the Ti Ti Islands, near Stewart Island, found no trace of radioactive material – making them safe to eat."
SP: It's lucky for the harvesters of mutton birds that the chicks mature in their islands and not in Fukushima. The mature birds eat squid and fish at the northern stages (Fukushima among them) of their incredible journeys migrating (some fly 300 miles a day and as long as a 40,000 mile round trip each year.
Trivia from Wikipedia:
"On August 18, 1961, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that thousands of crazed sooty shearwaters[8] were sighted on the shores of North Monterey Bay in California regurgitating anchovies, flying into objects and dying on the streets. The incident sparked the interest of local resident Alfred Hitchcock, along with a story about spooky bird behavior by British writer Daphne du Maurier, helping to inspire Hitchcock's 1963 thriller "The Birds," a cautionary tale of nature revolting against man[9] now ranked among the American Film Institute's Top 10 thrillers of the last century.
Scientists looking at the stomach contents of turtles and seabirds gathered in 1961 Monterey Bay ship surveys have found toxin-making algae were present in 79% of the plankton that the creatures ate. "I am pretty convinced that the birds were poisoned" says ocean environmentalist Sibel Bargu of Louisiana State University.
