Parents urge Tokyo to rethink radiation monitoring, Japan Times, June 8, 2011:

A group of Tokyo parents filed a request Tuesday asking the metropolitan government to change the way it determines radiation levels in the capital after their own study found relatively high levels of contamination around Koto Ward. [...]

“This should be taken as a sign that a grave (contamination) is in progress in Tokyo,” Ayako Ishikawa, the leader of the group, said during a news conference.

The metropolitan government checks levels of radioactivity at an elevation of 18 meters in Shinjuku Ward, where the maximum hourly reading was about 0.06 microsievert on Tuesday. But Ishikawa insists such readings are unreliable and should be taken at about 1 meter above the ground. [...]

[Kobe University professor Tomoya Yamauchi], an expert on radiation physics, said high levels of contamination were detected in soil, especially around a plant in Koto Ward that produces sludge, an ingredient in cement, where the level reached 2,300 becquerels per kilogram [in late May]. [...]

  • We haven’t heard the T word (Tokyo) in a while, so this could be reason.

They already knew the water and green tea were not safe.

Still, now, what would you do if you were living in Tokyo?

If I was a university student i would apply for a Learn Abroad program, and move to that place early before the program starts. This does two things: gets you going on an exit plan that looks legitament to your friends, coworkers, fellow students, and especially family that is already brainwashed into thinking all is okay and applying pressure on anybody, especially you, that talks about getting out of tokyo away from the radiation. Secondly, if this crisis empties Tokyo, perhaps other universities in the world will accept your schooling that you did so far at said university and abroad and apply it towards their degree program. Once you are out of the country, invite friends and fam to come visit you. At the new safer location they may see things better once they talk to the locals and begin to adopt their view that all is lost in “Doing Business As Usual in Japan”.

The 18 metre above ground level way to measure is utterly meaningless if contamination is coming from rain. It will be on the ground. Remember the guy who measured 5.77 microsieverts:-

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9a0Q1v93SA&feature=player_embedded

….on ground level, but 0.1 microsieverts at body level.

Sludge is a known accumulator. What is the reading in normal soil? Like this the title seems very misleading.

Here is a more realistic peek taken from this article,

“Hoshano Koto Kodomo Mamoru Kai” (“No! Radioactivity — The Group to Save Children in Koto”) found that some areas in Koto Ward, located in the eastern part of the capital, had a maximum hourly reading of 0.18 microsievert of radiation.

That number is a fraction of the level in Fukushima Prefecture, which hit about 1.6 microsieverts per hour on Tuesday.

The metropolitan government checks levels of radioactivity at an elevation of 18 meters in Shinjuku Ward, where the maximum hourly reading was about 0.06 microsievert on Tuesday.

But Ishikawa insists such readings are unreliable and should be taken at about 1 meter above the ground.”

  • Anyone know approximately what might be happening in each of the cores, with worst-case scenarios?

    Report Comment

    • Manifest Irony

No one knows for sure and there is no way to know until we get a look inside containment at the pressure vessel. If it’s full of holes and the cores melted through, that’s pretty much the worst case already. The problem is who knows when you can get close enough to the reactor to visually inspect it, even remotely. At 200Sv/hr I doubt that even robots can get close enough without dying.

Worse worst case is the cores have pockets of fission taking place now and then and are spewing out radioactive particles out in the open.

Worser worst case is if one of the cores find a way to blow up, through steam explosion or whatever (not a lot of science on this stuff, BTW; it’s never happened before) really dispersing contamination.

Worst worst case scenario would probably be a true meltdown, as into the ground down, and the water supply of millions is threatened. Contaminated air, soil, freshwater and sea.

18 meters above the ground? Everybody needs some tall stilts to stay that high.
How about testing the ground, period?
The FDA tests GOM shrimp with the most technological test known on the planet earth. The smell test. So if the smell test was stinky, would they test the smell from 18 meters?

IAEA to ask Japan for transparent nuclear report
    Thursday, June 09, 2011 06:02 +0900 (JST

NHK has learned that the International Atomic Energy Agency will ask Japan to provide a more transparent report on the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

NHK obtained the draft of a statement what will be announced at a meeting of ministers from IAEA member nations, scheduled to open on June 20th.

The 4-page draft calls on Japan to accurately report the nuclear crisis and share its assessment with the world so that it can learn from the accident.

It also calls on the UN nuclear watchdog to draw up concrete plans based on the ministerial debate to create international arrangements to promote the safety of nuclear power.
