Follow-up to: Politician found with gunshot to her head -- CBS: "Does not appear to be a natural death" -- Was directing BP oil spill fine money -- 5th Mississippi lawmaker to die in recent months (VIDEO)

The Clarion-Ledger, 12:09p ET: Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis said Rep. Jessica Upshaw, R-Diamonhead, was found dead in the garage of a Mendenhall residence, just feet from where her car was parked. The sheriff said Upshaw appeared to be standing under the garage door between the garage and driveway when she died. Lewis said Upshaw apparently shot herself with a small-caliber handgun. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is still looking into the case, and no official determination has been made as to her death. Upshaw was found dead Sunday at the home of former Rep. Clint Rotenberry, R-Mendenhall, Lewis said. The two were thought to have been dating for several years. [...]

Mississippi Press, 12:34p ET: “The sheriff is saying a lot more than we’re comfortable saying at this point,” said MBI spokesman Warren Strain. “We have nothing new. We’re still doing our investigation. We’re still processing what was collected yesterday. “There will be an autopsy conducted and more information gathered from that. We’re pressing on with our investigation.” [...] Strain said earlier that the shooting occurred Sunday about 1 p.m. No one has been arrested in the case.

“She’s passed; that’s all I know at this point. I’ve given it to MBI. They’re doing their investigation on it.” -Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor

“The investigators are conducting interviews and following leads. It would be premature to make any statement regarding the investigation at this point.” -MBI spokesman Warren Strain

I can't see how they are still stating that she killed herself. Women generally don't use guns to kill themselves. Pill overdose, leave the car running in an closed garage, maybe cutting wrists, etc; but guns tend to be too violent. Not only that but in someone else's open garage, in the middle of the afternoon.

I think they should be looking into what she was working on in regards to the BP oil spill funds. I wonder if it's being funneled into shady dealings. Maybe falsification of geological surveys and reporting that would make BP look good, or showing that they aren't actually doing any real clean-up.

A million dollar hit or 50 million in clean-up… hmmmmm.

interesting thoughts bwoodfield. What likely happened is someone knew her travel plans, waited out of site and approach her after she left her vehicle. The gun was likely left to infer suicide. Normally, a person who intends to commit suicide plans (fantasizes) if ahead of time (days to weeks), which is why bathtubs and park benches are favorite spots. In this case, the location of the death hints that it was random, and as such, not suicide.

On another note: with the above in mind, she may have been murdered to tie-up lose ends or to prevent her from doing her job. Either way, I would not count on any law enforcement to look too deep into this. While there are many good LEAs out there, none are permitted to do any independent investigations; without of course, risking life, limb, family and pension should they choose to buck the system. We know multinationals are in complete control of our government, so we should all simply send flowers to the family she's left behind and then go see a good cop movie…

  • We Not They Finally

You know something? There are two places where people NEVER commit suicide. One is in a parking garage, where the killer lays in wait to attack in an enclosed space, in semi-darkness, and can make a twisty concealed escape through the parked cars. They know that the person has to return to their car, so they just wait. The other is under a parking garage door!! Where the person will have to be to leave or enter the house. Killer just lays in wait until the car has just been parked or is about to be driven. This is one big "duh."
