Super Typhoon Sets Aim at Japan
Accuweather
By Evan Duffey, Meteorologist
Jun 17, 2012; 11:32 AM ET
Guchol, a tropical cyclone in the western Pacific, rapidly strengthened Saturday afternoon, local time. Winds are now in excess of 150 mph, making Guchol a super typhoon, the highest classification for tropical cyclones in the western Pacific.
If Guchol were an Atlantic Hurricane, it would be considered a Category 5 storm.
[...]
the storm is also expected to intensify further over the next day or two.
[...]
Guchol will still likely be a very powerful tropical cyclone upon reaching the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Powerful winds, torrential rain and intense surf will be among some of the problems expected for the islands.
[...]
In fact, the main threat the storm poses to the main island of Japan will be its torrential rains. Heavy rain could lead to mudslides and flash flooding, especially in the mountains just west of Tokyo.

At least they got their cover on Unit 4 SFP. Unit 3's pool is still exposed.
Report Comment
Hi Razz at least we now no the real reason 4 the 60 ton lid on the barbie. But as far as sfp numero 3 wasnt that gone when reator 3 splurted?
Report Comment
If they know what's going on in Unit 3's SFP, they are not saying. It holds some water and a few pics show handles of fuel assemblies.
Look how long it is taking to clean up Unit 4 and it is supposedly safe for workers. Units 1&3 are no go zones for humans near the reactors.
The site is still a disaster waiting to happen with Units 5&6 having full loads in their reactors (in cold shut down) and all the spent fuel ponds holding waste including the Common Spent Fuel Pond. Heavy rains will fill up the basements.
Japan's answer to Fukushima is to restart some other reactors.
Report Comment
What pool at #3?
Report Comment
The one that used to hold the MOX fuel that sprayed all over the planet, though visibly a mile from the reactor?
Nope, haven't seen it…they "buried" it with topsoil that will wash away with the typhoon…let us hope no human can really control the weather because, if the technology exists, and is not going to be used to divert this storm, then…grab yer pitchforks! (Tape your signs of protest onto them and hit the square!)
Report Comment
There is still an issue with counter-clockwise flow of high winds blowing particles in a circular fashion from areas with lots of particles on the ground to areas farther west and then farther south of the stricken facility. Even if the reactors are still actively spewing, there should be constant clean-up to reduce dispersion in cases such as this. Now even more locations will be subjected to hotter particles.
Report Comment
Typically typhoons weaken considerable by the time they get as far North as Japan.
Nevertheless, Mother Nature's "mixer" is sure to make further additions to the witches brew as well as help spread it far and wide all over Japan. Like this all will be equally barbecued from inhaling and outer exposure of harmful radiations. It's a case of more Darwin Awards in the making.
Report Comment
Good Humanitarian,
Drop your rocks and pick up your socks people because here comes a whippin arse Typhoon towards japan. What looks most ominous is it going to suck a lot of the radioactive plume from fukushima right down to the ground and straight across japan.
*** ALERT!!!!! The japan govt will not warn the people to duck and hide and be prepared for higher radioactive fallout. People survive storms, but they don’t do so well after a massive dose of radiation. If you know of anyone that is downwind of this approaching storm, warn them to evac to the south or prepare to hunker down and shelter in place. If you do not know what to do to shelter in place, then do some homework:
http://www.ki4u.com/guide.htm
Basically, they need to seal inside with plenty of supplies, food, and water, and not go outside for a few days, or weeks. Checking the radioactive environment BEFORE and AFTER is vital to study. Start Marking info from the maps showing the readings NOW, and during this storm, and then after.
http://japan.failedrobot.com/
WARNING: Not good for japan. The govt will not tell them and this is what this note is being posted here for where some can do some good with it.

What is looking two times bad is the wrap around this low (10M) fallout will be taking as it comes back across the east side of japan at near ground levels where many thought they would escape the horror that daily spews it’s killing radiation contamination all over the Island of japan and World. This must be watched closely by those that are going to get hit by this on Monday and into Tuesday. Where it goes next remains in the jet stream, as always. This has been well established as the real deal to pay attention to. GET OUT FROM UNDER THE JET STREAM and BEFORE the planned economic crash and ensuing martial law for long term survivability.
Hold your cards folks, the bottle is about to spin!
(And herein lies the reason why this writer got fed up with trying to make a point here. Writing a comment in this LIMITED WAY is like writing a frigging letter to the editor of a forkin newspaper and being constantly restrained from making a full point. THIS is restriction of free speech and absolutely UNACCEPTABLE to this Heart. Maybe some day the admin will finally get it after being told so many times about this restrictive 350 word limit on expression without going through all the forking hassle to post a point of consideration here.)

A storm of this magnitude can cause widespread power outages. They better have backup generators off the ground where they don't flood, to keep the water flowing at all of their nuke plants.

If our grid gets wiped out our computers (and the generators) will not function and we'll never know what is happening. This is in addition to the news and info blackout.
Only God knows what will happen if 7 billion people suddenly can't access their ATM machines.
Mass looting might be one outcome along with the usual pandemonium as we saw with Hurricane Katrina.
Even without solar flares, Sharp2197 makes a good, but worrisome, point.
For those who like to live life on the edge, I think your wish is coming true.

Tropical system Guchol has multiple factors working against it before it even reaches Fukushima:
1) It will be moving into colder waters which will reduce its intensity
2) It is forecast to hit Japan's highest mountain ranges, which will bleed the system of its vigor
3) Its enterance into a swath of dry air will limit its convective capabilities through low moisture.
4) Its enterance into a swath of higher wind sheer will also limit its convective capabilities
Even if the eyewall arrives at Fukushima, windspeeds should already be reduced below 50mph. Sustained winds are more likely to be only around the 25-35 mph range.

Maybe you should put 'cost' in quotes – especially for the last point which has no dollar or yen value.
That is, I'm not sure they have ATM machines on the streets of glory.
Even without death, there are also the broken families and lives of pain and suffering to consider.
Report Comment
Whether an R4 collapse, or a Euro collapse, events will happen so fast as to make ATM machines obsolete: since the 2008 Lehman/world credit collapse, I have been carrying 3 months of cash in my own personal ATM – an 'around the middle' – money belt.
Bring it on…
Report Comment
Some US States' police now seize cash if you carry over a certain amount on the highway. The dumb goons assume you are going to use it to buy drugs. Hide it well if you travel. Tennessee and Texas have done this. Its possible in other places too. Maybe when TSHTF they won't have time to rob innocent drivers. At the least never voluntarily let them search your car. Not only do they rob people they take away what could be their means of survival in a calamity.
And I wonder now with detectable rads being present they could say almost anyone is showing up as showing some radiation and use that to stop anyone they want.
Even walking around be careful with cash. Best to have some real good stash locations around. Even a safe-deposit box; the bank can crash but I don't think they can take whats in your box. least I hope not.
Report Comment
They might claim that the boxes themselves are radioactive and prevent you going near them.
They'll think of something.
Report Comment
I'll think of something too: when there is the 1st incidence of ATM runs, bank lines forming, or debit/credit card malfunctions, my safety box will be emptied.

Mother Earth is sending a very clear communication and signal via Mother Nature.
The Japanese leaders had better pay very close attention to what she is saying! She is speaking clearly and sending us all information via the mass animal deaths reported around the world.
Enough is enough and either we change our ways quickly or she will change our entire world in a heat beat as to rid her only body planet of all us humans.
We humans are behaving like a virus plague and or cancer effecting her body health and I would not want to draw any attention to our actions, since she is ultimately in charge of our human fate!
Shut them down! Shut them all down now!

Then all work together to clean up what's left of the planet.

So this storm will end up in Russia or Alaska? Nice, maybe seed it with Boron, please.
Report Comment
Guchol is about 300 miles wide and forward speed is under 10 miles per hour with 130 mph sustained circular winds making it the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. If it builds in strength as expected to 157 mph sustained winds the typhoon becomes the equivalent of a CAT 5 hurricane.
Flooding and storm surges are usually the biggest killers from ocean storms and the lowlying damaged complex at Fukushima is at risk. We will see how their makeshift levee of gabion blocks, wire cages filled with rocks holds up. I believe the levee is built in front of Units 3 and 4 only.

Looks like it should slow down a lot in terms of sustained winds, according to that projected track, before it hits Tokyo. Gonna be a lot of rain though!
Report Comment
There is only one tropical cyclone on Earth right now, and that is powerful Super Typhoon Guchol in the West Pacific. Guchol is currently moving NNW at about 15mph and will soon take a more north and then northeast turn according to the official forecast. It currently has maximum sustained winds of 130 kts according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, making it a high end Category 4 typhoon. It is forecast to begin weakening soon and likely already has, slowly, as the remainder of its forecast track brings it over cool waters, high wind shear, and dry air.
Looks like Japan is going to take a massive hit. Will cross Fukushima on present track. #1 tent and #4 SFP might well be at risk.
Reality is that if #4 drops to the ground, a shelter in place strategy may save your life.
Here is a checklist I put together on no-brainer just do it way to build a shelter in place kit.

Gotta love it: wonderful!! >>> "Only God knows what will happen if 7 billion people suddenly can't access their ATM machines."

The real threat from Super Typhoon Guchol: the rain and winds will whip up cesium, strontium, and all the other toxic isotopes that have been deposited in the vegetation and land areas (especially mountainsides) and the run-off of the 15 months of stored poisons will flow into the public water system and crop lands.
This could be the final blow to the drinkable water in Japan after this week. Bioaccumulation will be surging in the former life-sustaining water supplies and croplands of Japan. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. Not a safe drop of water to drink nor any rice safe to eat. Freshwater fish will be a death sentence.
I think most Japanese in their hearts knew this day was approaching. Time for the slow death by radiation poisoning from the necessities of life. The air is also toxic, but food and water will finish the job started nearly 67 years ago by the nuclear scientists. Japan… Sayonara.

Yes, when the drinking water is affected you're toast:

"Among the risks demonstrated by the Fukushima crisis is the threat of water contamination – including contamination of drinking water supplies by radioactive material. In the wake of the Fukushima accident, drinking water sources as far as 130 miles from the plant were contaminated with radioactive iodine, prompting cities such as Tokyo to warn against consumption of the water by infants.
In the United States, 49 million Americans receive their drinking water from surface sources located within 50 miles of an active nuclear power plant – inside the boundary the Nuclear Regulatory Commission uses to assess risk to food and water supplies."

PREDICTION prove correct after the last Typhoon:
Japan will now have increased radioactive pollution because of the effect that HUGE Typhoon (low pressure) will have on the Corium(s) and their interaction with the ground water below the Fukushima complex… The Very low pressure will tend to "wick" the ground water upward toward the surface where the still molten Corium(s) are…
Additionally, if the actual Typhoon "strikes" the Complex then there is a very real chance that the #4 Spent Fuel Pool could be damaged; if that happens, then Fukushima will become the greatest disaster in Modern History as the ENTIRE 6 Reactor Complex may be destroyed sending huge amounts of radioactive pollution Globally in a massive Hydro-Corium steam "event" that could last YEARS!
This potential EVENT has been discussed by the Japanese Irregulars* on HP since 3/11/11 and is still yet another topic that MSM is keeping almost silent about!
