That is interesting question, and important to me, as I have a planned trip abroad soon which is fun related and can be easily abbandoned. Only those who follow the situation closely understand the difference between Fukushima and Chernobyl, and the fact that panic buying with all the consequences is way too much of the reaction, even if the full truth is uncovered to the world all at once. Of course new massive explosion(s) would be different but this is difficult to predict while breaking the silence is likely coming. What do you think? I have read the story about the creatures.

I think the problem is that there is nothing TEPCO or anyone else can do to solve the problem(s) and this is what they cannot say.
This is just my take on it with no special scientific basis to back it up.
When you hear of George W, Jeb and Poppy heading for South America to “retire” that will be the most accurate sign that things are really bad. Of course, they can always leave secretly.

That’s the rub, people will freak out when there is death and deformities as proof of troubles. But by then, given this danger, the proof will signify is too late to keep yourself safe. I can’t imagine what all six reactors spewing is going to mean for us in North America. This could lead to the entire country being abandoned and then what about all the other reactors across the island? This can really become an ugly snowball, very ugly.

Gov’t, corporate, media and now civilian denial is very discouraging.
Other than corium/water/steam explosions, maybe the first undeniable signs of true disaster-level radiation will be sickness among residents in Iitate and Kawamata Prefectures staying and refusing to obey new evacuation orders.

IAEA reported I-131 and Cs-137 levels in the megabecquerels per square meter back on March 30, in the 25-58km range from the plant.

I have been prepping long-dated canned, dry and other foods and supplies since 2008, and this crisis has me tempted to double my efforts, which however will require a larger air-conditioned space.
But the labelled and dated boxes are looking more valuable everyday, and if someday soon there’s a run on grocery and big-box store shelves, I won’t need to risk getting caught in the crush.
