Though earthquakes normally can't be predicted, it's interesting in this case USGS notes, "Over the month leading up to the February 6th earthquake, there have been dozens of earthquakes in the epicentral region – over 40 M4.5 or larger in the preceding 7 days alone, 7 of which were larger than M6. Faulting mechanisms for these earthquakes suggest a mixture of strike-slip, normal and thrust faulting events."

Also I guess this (among other things) leaves the slight possibility the 8.0 was a prequel to larger quake. It's my understanding this stretch of the fault-system (Australia-Pacific subduction zone) doesn't generate megathrust quakes like the Japan or Cascadia subduction zones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megathrust_earthquake

Suspicious0bservers has had an earthquake watch on since late January.
    http://m.youtube.com/#/user/Suspicious0bservers
I always begin my day with the 3 Minute News. Best available daily update on earth changes, solar activity, planetary alignments, and our collapsing atmosphere. A current planetary alignment that included the sun, Earth, and the Moon caused the M8.0 quake, as predicted in January.

Santa Cruz Island sits atop a thrust zone, where the Australian Plate subducts under the Pacific Plate. This point is the tip of the spear, a locking point where the two plates meet. That lock is now broken. There will be compensatory movement all along the Pacific Ring of Fire, as the Pacific Plate adjusts to the sudden release of the pressure put on it by the Australian Plate.

In Japan, expect M6-M7 quakes to hit over the next one to two weeks as the slippage adjusts.
Until the February Uptick, earth quake activity had been very quiet thus far in 2013. Then, bam, bam! One M6+ quake after another, most of them in the Santa Cruz Island area. A lively February so far.

USGS tracks the aftershocks at http://on.doi.gov/VSqotg – they have 106 aftershocks listed at present time, the lowest ones seem to be M4.6 I judge this to be a good thing in that it's allowed a lot of energy in the fault system to dissipate through small movements.
Although due to the relation of magnitudes to actual energy release, the aftershocks may not be so significant… And I can't bother to integrate together all the detected aftershoks, but on a rough guess it looks like the aftershocks have released another M8's worth of seismic energy bit by bit.

Meh, no post editing, realized my mistake just as I posted ^^ Or rather just not calculating properly… I'd revise that down quite low, below M7 for the aftershocks currently. The first problem is that USGS link is actully showing quakes before the M8 as well (precursors), the actual number of aftershocks looks to be 69.

Estimating things like that is fairly impossible anyway, I believe USGS isn't bothering to even list aftershocks below M4.6, so there's certainly going to be very small amount of seismic energy that's not even listed (due to the logarithmis scale the effect of those is very small).

Most of the aftershocks are around M5 – 55 for M5 or over, 4 for M6 or over. Since each full magnitude is 10 times previous magnitude, this would give at least M7 for the combined aftershocks. As I noted in my above post, the magnitude to energy relationship isn't actually 1 to 1; it takes 32 times as much *energy* to cause one full magnitude higher quake. But so many things affect that in reality it's possible to only give very rough ballpark figure, and the earthquakes are still going on.

Anyway, number of aftershocks is still under 100, and total energy released by aftershocks is still fraction of original.

** A lot of what happened is not known in detail. Is the Lata airstrip (the only one at Nendo) still in use. Early reports have mentioned that the tsunami hit also the airport and that the airstrip was inondated.

Update 10:31 UTC : 42 aftershocks of more than Magnitude 5 since the mainshock. These kind of strong continuous aftershocks are rather exceptional.
Update 10:29 UTC : A lot of people are surprised that a Tsunami of “only” 1 to 1.5 meter can generate this kind of destruction. Many people are having a wrong idea of Tsunamis merely because of the drawings who can be found on the internet. They think that tsunamis have to be huge waves arriving on the coast. In most cases tsunamis are sea swelling with extremely strong currents. The swelling can go on and off for a couple of times, exactly what happened based on testimonies reported in Lata. 2 swells of 1.5 meter can be very destructive on a flat coastal strip.
Update 09:29 UTC : SIBC (Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation) reports that up to six people have reportedly died as a result of the tsunami that struck near Temotu Province early this afternoon.

    “Tectonic Summary
The February 6th, 2013 M 8.0 earthquake in the Santa Cruz Islands occurred as a result of shallow thrust faulting on or near the plate boundary interface between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of this earthquake, the Australia plate converges with and subducts beneath the Pacific plate, moving towards the east-northeast at a rate of approximately 94 mm/yr.
The February 6th earthquake is located approximately 700-750 km ESE of the Mw 8.1 Solomon Islands earthquake of April 1, 2007, and the Mw 7.1 Solomon Island earthquake of January 3, 2010.
It is over 900 km to NNW of the February 2, 2012 Mw 7.1 Vanuatu earthquake, and approximately 200-300 km north of a series of earthquakes in October, 2009 along the Vanuatu Trench that included two earthquakes larger than magnitude 7 (Mw 7.8, Mw 7.4)….”

There's now 6 aftershocks of M6 of higher, last 4 about every 8 hours. In addition one of the aftershocks has been ugraded to M7 which itself would have been a major earthquake, so yes, I'd say the aftershock activity is definitely exceptional.

9 people are confirmed dead so far, though it's worth remembering this area of the world doesn't have much real-time coverage and the earthquake and tsunami itself will have cut communications and roads, so I doubt that'll be the final toll.

USA Today did not as an aside that there's been a curious "cluster" of earthquakes in recent days: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/02/07/solomon-islands-tsunami/1897891/
