Operations at all of Japan’s 54 nuclear power plants will be suspended “for a moment” starting on May 6, trade minister Yukio Edano said [...]

His comment suggests the government will be unable to restart reactors 3 and 4 at the Oi plant in Fukui Prefecture by May 5, when the Tomari nuclear power plant will go offline for a regular inspection.

[...] They have stayed offline because operators have been unable to overcome safety concerns sparked by the meltdowns at the Fukushima No. 1 plant last year.

The government [is] apparently fearing that the political hurdles to restart them will be higher if all 54 are stopped at once. [...]

[...] Gov. Issei Nishikawa [...] did not immediately consent to the request, apparently prompting Edano to conclude that the chance of firing up the Oi reactors before May 5 is remote.

    Yes take note all the other nuclear countries of the world.

    It becomes so easy to shut them all down…when one of them has basically destroyed your entire country.

    When bitten by a rapid wild dog in a pack… The whole pack must be killed.

    The problem with your analogy of course is that you make comparisons of unchanging natural laws to the wild variables of animal behavior. Imho, a better analogy would be the destruction of handguns once man found that they can be used to kill people. Handguns are only good for one thing. Another one might be, when zeppelins were discovered to be flamable they stopped producing them. Remember how they got great fuel mileage?

      Handguns are good for protecting yourself, your loved ones, your home and property. I'm a pretty liberal Dem so chill out, I like my rifles and handguns, have alot of fun at the range shooting with my son and other relatives. We also dear hunt.

      Anyhow, the reason Germany quit building Zeppelins was because the US, which had the largest natural reserve of helium on the planet considered said helium to be a war material and would not export it to the Germans. They were forced to use Hydrogen, which along with the flamable gun-powder like chemical they painted the outsied with, well, you all saw the results. Had Helium been available they would no doubt continued with production. Besides, they still make dirigibles to this day….

        If you like his analogy better, that's fine. I was not talking about rifles as I like to hunt as well. I just feel that the handgun was made to kill people. I speak out against that. However, in my world it is not a political issue. I grew up watching Mr. Eastwood on TV and I understand how hand guns have grown to be symbolic of many things "cool" in society. Humanity has this desire like that of a daredevil who wants to bring all of society on a "Mr. Toads wild ride", through a goat trail in Yellowstone National Park. Imho, Japan is doing the right thing by not bringing their good, healthy, and hard working people down that trail any longer. Like asking a victim that had his brains blown out by a handgun, "How do you feel about guns"?

      40 million pre-cancer patients flooding Chinese medical facilities. The Yen will become worthless, as the evacuation is the bulk of the Japanese industrial area. 40 million additional people sucking up China's last amounts of clean water.

      From a purely financial perspective, it's financial suicide to let the Japanese in, and the Chinese have never shown any humanitarian inclinations.

      And move 40 million people to the Kuril Islands, with no infrastructure in place? 40 million people freezing in tents?

      I pray for all the innocent victims of this disaster. The politicians of the world don't give a damn, and they all knew this day would come, sooner or later. But there's just too much money involved:

      I have an issue with their parroting the "EPA raised its acceptable levels of radiation" statement.

      Mike Adams reported they were PLANNING to do it, but where is the proof this ever occurred?

      The real issue is the PAG's (Protective Action Guidelines) never got implemented because the DoE issued a set of guidelines for implementing the PAG's. Since the DoE doesn't believe in the linear no-dose threshold model of radiation exposure (i.e., no exposure is safe, even at low levels), the PAG's never got implemented.

      Unless someone can show me otherwise, I simply don't believe the EPA changed the "acceptable levels."

      Why would they bother doing that when the DoE guidelines for implementing the PAG's trump the EPA's oversight of the PAG's? The sleight of hand that allowed the PAG's to be overlooked had already occurred. The DoE published its recommendations for the PAG's back in 2010.

      I get really tired of seeing such blatant mis-statements of fact. These people have zero credibility with me when they believe everything someone else has written w/o doing any of their own fact checking. It's intellectual laziness and just plain old lousy journalism.

      That being said, can someone produce the evidence of a change in the PAG's or acceptable levels? If so, my apologies. I'm NOT pro-nuclear and I'm not a "shill.

      Sometimes you've just got to call a spade, a spade.

        In other words, the DoE's interpretation is relatively high levels of radiation are not harmful, therefore there is no need to implement the PAG's. That's my interpretation of what I read in the DoE doc's anyway.

        How are we ever going to have any credibility when people keep parroting mis-statements of fact on such serious issues?

        Whoopie, please be clear I do not mean you! I just happened to notice the article made the statement the EPA had raised the acceptable exposure levels. So unless I missed something big it never happened.

        They didn't need to do it (the EPA) because the DoE had more or less already stepped in and did it for them!

      I agree every Country is at a risk with these Nuclear Plants. However the fat cats are still walking around asking each other, what's in your wallet? Love of money, they don't want to lose that. They want to have the most among their friends, being the top dog. They would rather pee on the environment and the public, than to loose their so called wealth. Yes, they are the lowest dogs to do the damage they have and are causing to this earth and the people that God has created.

    An interdisciplinary team from MIT have estimated that given the expected growth of nuclear power from 2005 – 2055, at least four serious nuclear accidents would be expected in that period.[30][31]

    Hi all supporters of the people of Japan.

    With the Sesame Street, Muppets, and Mickey Mouse (TEPCO) crew still in charge of the worst man-made disaster in recorded history, it is frightful to watch events unfolding, and dreadful to see and anticipate what is possible from world leaders to deal with it.

    From what I can understand of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation summit in South Korea, the internal Japanese problem of nuclear plant destruction is just that. An internal issue for Japan. Did I get this wrong? I hope so.

    After first looking at the url post from JAHDESM from "The European Union Times", my family were shocked at what was reported there. Not having any idea as to the credibility of this, I looked at what RationalWiki had to say. There were quite a few others.

      Agreed , it is a stunning read on the overall topic of Japan. If it is accurate and true, it fills in all the gaps of info and reaction for me on the outside. It paints a horrible but realistic picture of the life and death dance Japan is in for her life, as we know it.

    I apologize for exceeding my comment space on the previous post.

    From a humanitarian mindset, and in light of what this radioactive atrocity means for the Japanese people, I applaud the PRC for these negotiations, if they are going on. As far as secrecy goes, it would be understood by most, I believe, that until fruition of some meaningful outcome, that these negotiations would be in secret.

    In contrast, I don't know that I can say the same for what is being told to the people of Japan on the ongoing radiological disaster.

    For the people of Japan, and all humanity, the question remains. Are we at the point of considering Japan to be lost and looking towards a mass evacuation?
