Title: Analysis of Radionuclide Releases from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident Part II
Source: Pure and Applied Geophysics
Authors: Pascal Achim, Marguerite Monfort, Gilbert Le Petit, Philippe Gross, Guilhem Douysset, Thomas Taffary, Xavier Blanchard, Christophe Moulin
Date: September 2012
[...] In this study, the emissions of the three fission products Cs-137, I-131 and Xe-133 are investigated.
[...] worldwide industrial Xe-133 background could be modified by Fukushima radioxenon release affecting the performances of the CTBT radionuclide monitoring network.
[...] during the couple of months after the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident, monitoring capabilities of the network could have been affected by the large amount of radioxenon released by the accident. The impact of Fukushima radioxenon releases on the worldwide Xe-133 background must also be investigated. [...]
The maps below show the activity concentration of Xe-133 at ground-level on March 31, 2011 (top) and May 10, 2011 (bottom)

80% of the core inventory has been released into the atmosphere. Guess what, NRC and DOE? Your models SUCK.
"…The total source term estimated gives a fraction of core inventory of about 8 × 1018 Bq at the time of reactors shutdown. This result suggests that at least 80 % of the core inventory has been released into the atmosphere and indicates a broad meltdown of reactor cores…"

Would not surprise me if 80 percent of the cores have been vaporized and we probably got of lucky could have been worse, what a pathetic statement we should never have gotten to this point, we are doing a really good job at exterminating ourselfs and a happy new year to you.

And as little as 25% could have comprised the initial fallout plume, with 75% retained still in the upper atmosphere, slowly redistributing in rain and snow outs…Potrblog has some pretty high storm readings in St. Louis through early winter that he posts on Youtube.
I like the scientific concern over the effects of radioxenon on monitoring equipment: what about the effects on biological (human) life…?
I watch the puddles underneath my snowboots dry to a crusty white which reminds me of the important part that atmospheric dust plays in forming a snowflake and how Cesium and Strontium love making them…

i suspect that much of this source is the SFP at unit 1 or unit 3.
i'd be surprised if 80% of the cores vaporized, but i wouldn't be surprised if 10% of the SFPs vaporized.
we have pretty good indication the cores melted out and went down through the basements.
But the SFPs' are up there, just bubbling away.

Help Please!
When they write 80% of the "core inventory" was vaporized do they mean 80% of the inventory of noble gasses from the reactor cores or do they mean 80% of the ENTIRE RADIONUCLIDE inventory?
Moreover, they make a couple of claims I find problematic in the abstract:
1. "Atmospheric transport simulations suggest that the main air emissions have occurred during the events of March 14, 2011 (UTC) and that no major release occurred after March 23."
2. "The radioactivity emitted into the atmosphere could represent 10 % of the Chernobyl accident releases for I-131 and Cs-137."
My opinion with respect to #1:
I think major emissions occurred in Dec 2011 and Jan 2012 and the radnet data for the US west coast show it. Their data set only goes until May 2011.
With respect to #2:
I have data from other sources establishing that cesium releases from Fukushima are equal to cesium releases from Chernobyl.
Of course, their data collection period is very limited. Still, I think this is a vast understatement.
I think we need to read the article carefully. Not tonight for me…
Happy New Year's All!!!

Excellent and telling data
I posted on the data monitoring thread my concern given your location in the southern hemisphere.
Great flyer. Its clear and to the point. The problem is that people do NOT want to know because they feel they cannot control the fallout.
I've been struggling since it happened to raise awareness. The only people who really seemed concerned were mothers. But they quickly diverged from the food practices I recommended (avoiding fresh milk after detections of Iodine-131, avoiding berries from the west coast, avoiding salmon from the Pacific-Northwest, etc.).
People are happy to sleep until it is too late. Then it is regarded as a personal tragedy unless the problems are overtly epidemic.
So sad.
Report Comment
The flyer has been successful in reaching a lot of people.
Some still do not comprehend the seriousness of the situation. Mainly because of the government and media silence. Also they can't see it, taste it, or feel it, until it is to late. Long term data provides people with something concrete to comprehend.
From commentary here and other forums, more and more people are starting to report serious health symptoms.
In the long term more people may die from the indirect effects of the
radioactive contamination, as a result of the weakened immune systems or virus mutations, causing epidemics.

"…On the basis of a comparison between the reactor core inventory at the time of reactor shutdowns and the fission product activities measured in air at Takasaki, especially 95Nb and 103Ru, it was possible to show that the reactor cores were exposed to high temperature for a prolonged time. This diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of 113Sn in air at Takasaki. The 133Xe assessed release at the time of reactor shutdown (8×10^18 Bq) turned out to be in the order of 80 % of the amount deduced from the reactor core inventories. This strongly suggests a broad meltdown of reactor cores…"

Experts still argue over how much of Chernobyl's core was released into the atmosphere. Some say 25%, some say 100%. Chernobyl's core burned for 10 days straight before the fire was put out. So one would think most of the core went airborne. The initial explosion blew the lid off and sent pieces of fuel rods and graphite all over the site…that must have been 10% of the core just to start with probably more.
Daiichi seems to have suffered the same fate with Unit 3's SFP discharging its fuel rods around the site during the explosion but it is still a guess until you can confirm the reactor and containment lids are still in place.
IOW, if all the units' lids are in place and the cores melted down mostly releasing gases and aerosols, then the worst fear has been realized with a fuel pool exploding in Unit 3 (Maybe Unit 4 also). Talk and worries of Unit 4's pool collapsing and burning causing a deadly fallout cloud might have already partially happened with Unit 3 exploding and vaporizing some or all of its fuel rods.
I think they already know what happened, they are just not going to tell us. Probably because it is such bad news. Contents are known, residual heat can be calculated, all the possible radioactive poisons are known, they already know how much output of anything is possible whether it burns up inside a working core or in an explosion. They know.
Could it be worse? Sure, the other SFPs are in jeopardy.

SP: as Anthony says… We're only missing the truth. Liars and damn liars. Fukushima Daiichi has gushed ten times more radiation than Chernobyl…20 times more if we count the fate of the fissile fuel in the ground being slowly washed into the ocean. And another 50 Chernobyls are still in danger of gushing out of the spent fuel ponds if the whole place goes rogue.
Didn't see too much about MOX or plutonium or strontium-90 in the nucleocrat "research".

Great question! I know there is an answer.
What I see is that the people I know, in my small mountain town in central California, are SICK! I personally suspect they are suffering from all of this.
If it's not ear aches and breathing issues it's chronic fatigue and muscle pain. I would also include psychological issues into the mix as well. I would go so far as to say, one way or another, it is indeed affecting everyone… literally.
Medical doctors and the CDC have to be seeing weird trends.
That's just how I see it at this time.
That's my layman's observation this first day of 2013.
(disclaimer: I am not a medical professional)
Someday, this historic catastrophe may be seen more by the unmeasurable amounts of 'suffering' than by it's countable deaths.

Thanks for the concern.
(Coccidioidomycosis) – Valley fever is what we call it here.
I have known a person who did die of this. Very sad.
My general point above was that the 'mixture' of ongoing fallout (cesium, strontium, xenon, plutonium, iodine, etc…)in various amounts will most likely weaken the immune systems for everyone.
Radiation exposure weakening the immune system can/will be a trigger for many different diseases. This will allow all kinds of illnesses to be more frequent. That would not be a good thing and there's no 'good' way that I know of to track a such a thing except to say, "hey, there's a whole lot of sick people here".
Those who took mitigation measures early on, such as… iodine pills, avoiding rain and toxic cleansing methods may be glad they did. The rest may wish they had been more aware.

ahhhh, ok. yes, quite correct it most certainly will weaken the immune systems of everyone.
