April 5: 60 counts of alpha ray within 300 seconds at his home on the lid of a septic tank

More on Alpha Emitters -Wikipedia (Emphasis Added)

“When alpha particle emitting isotopes are ingested, they are far more dangerous than their half-life or decay rate would suggest, due to the high relative biological effectiveness of alpha radiation to cause biological damage, after alpha-emitting radioisotopes enter living cells. Ingested alpha emitter radioisotopes (such as transuranics or actinides) are an average of about 20 times more dangerous, and in some experiments up to 1000 times more dangerous, than an equivalent activity of beta emitting or gamma emitting radioisotopes. [...]

Because of this high mass and strong absorption, if alpha-emitting radionuclides do enter the body, alpha radiation is the most destructive form of ionizing radiation. It is the most strongly ionizing, and with large enough doses can cause any or all of the symptoms of radiation poisoning. It is estimated that chromosome damage from alpha particles is anywhere from 10 to 1000 times greater than that caused by an equivalent amount of gamma or beta radiation, with the average being set at 20 times.”

EPA: Which Radionuclides are Alpha Emitters?

There are many alpha emitting radioactive elements, both natural and manmade. You can find fact sheets for several key alpha emitters at the Radionuclides page:

  • americium-241
  • plutonium-236
  • uranium-238 [...]

Looks about 20 miles north of the worst case scenario tops.

Minamisoma is about 16 miles (25 km) north of Fuku NPP. It has been really badly hit with the very worst of the rads.

A day or 2 after the 3/11/11 event, one of our SF bay area news affiliates carried a story about a woman from Minamisoma who was a student at UCB. The network found the family which was all safe as they lived on the side of the hill, above the tsunami, and had no EQ damage. It was a heartwarmiong story as the alphabet news conglomerate pictured her family standing on the balcony of their home. The UCB student was so happy that her family was okay. I am trying to locate her through the campus Japanese students' club so I can ask the TV channel to do a follow up.

I don't want to be prying, or insensitive, but I wonder what's happening now. May they all continue to be well!

This danger is the result of everyone involved in nuclear industries. Each person is responsible, and must stop what they are doing. You are destroying nature and life. Please stop, and find a different profession.

    • I offer to teach them solar, and typical pro nuker response is like now way, or I would rather go on welfare.

there is no hope for the brainwashed!

Your name is very apt. Your model is good for absolutey everything and not just nuclear. Huge companies and governments are interested in only money, it comes before everything else, even the power which it engenders. These two 'chums' will never do anything for the environment, its flora, fauna or even its people. Those who never realised this have the shining example of post-Fukushima Japan to educate them. Most of us who have the ability to analyse, have done so and seen the way everything unfolds in the aftermath of every disaster and every 'epidemic'. The mantra is as always, protect the guilty industry and blame something that can't fight back, no matter if it's badgers, wild birds or a tsunami, it's the same formula. The internet has the abstract of a Ph.D thesis showing the paradigm used. Only individuals can change the way this world is run and by using the same weapon, money. Cut your electricity consumption to the bone, then work out how you can provide that same power requirement off-the-grid. Above all look to what you do to earn your money and if what you do is detrimental to health and happiness, is destructive of plant, animal and human life, then stop. If you care about your future, your kids' future and the future of this planet, our only home, you need to start thinking and acting. We left careers 12 years ago in education (previously in industry, engineering and business), we are now subsistance organic smallholders, poor and extremely happy

I thought alpha particles were blocked by paper?

I see a plastic bag around the detector… does plastic allow alpha radiation through when paper does not?

Oh sorry, I see the separate probe off to the side now. It is all in Japanese, and no connection is seen between probe and detector, so it is hard to understand what is going on, what is being measured, with what….

Hi AGR, I wondered the same thing. The piece on the right seems to be the "detecting" device, which is cabled to the counter displaying the reading.
If I understand this correctly, we see 60 counts in 300 seconds – that makes 12 clicks (disintegrations) per minute. Is that correct? If so, I think we've seen lots worse before. Not to downplay, but….I also wonder if he not messed up his device by not protecting it during the reading.
