All the monitors are still not on here in Fl. There is one at a Nuke Power co. That was on the news of higher then normal readings but that’s it.

Xdr, I’m in FL too.. Do you have any idea how or who can test for plutonium??? I’m willing to work with anybody to help get some news out on this, but I don’t have any equipment and am not sure who would..
Somebody needs to get solid readings down here for iodine-131, but more importantly, uranium/plutonium/radionuclides…. I’m in Fort Lauderdale, if you know anybody that might have equipment or somewhere it could be borrowed, let me know..

A Geiger counter is about $500. from what I have seen, and a test for a substance is around $1,000. to $1200. at a lab from readings that I have done.
I am totally unequipped and inept to do anything except depend on resources and their fact findings on the web that may bare truths local (that are none) and afar (that may provide useful).
Monitoring the projected wind paths is really all that is tangible/useful, watch state reading to my West and stay indoors on heavy days.
And if Gramma was right, “Stay out of the rain and you may not get sick” !

My son and grandson live rt by Anaheim. I am in Long Beach. Ya, I have been fighting them on the monitor thing since the Xenon showed up the 12/13th. They lied. Bad. And now all this new info is on the EPA site, like it was always there. BS

The EPA closes their reading site here frequently, or maybe it’s my connection?
Maybe they have trouble with the monitors they have, or do they have to go off line to play chess, orrrrrr maybe they went offline when California had their highest readings?
When I was allowed to go into their site, I was surprised to see that, we were mostly higher than California.
Who knows maybe it’s because, our nuclear plant could have leaks and that’s why we would show higher???
At least they are online and it gives you an idea what is going on. I would not like to have that site stopped.
I believe Illinois has the most plants, try to find readings on them in the EPA site.

We have a geiger counter and are measuring amounts twice a day inside our house and outside. The levels have been creeping up slowly, but not high enough to cause an alarm. A couple of weeks ago, we were averaging 25-28 cpm, and now it’s 33-35 cpm.
We live in Maryland.
Don’t wait for EPA to tell you. Buy a geiger counter and see for yourself.

We know we have the radiation here, and we probably have breathed it in.
It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
I am not a professional person in the knowledge of radiation, but I have read that there are no safe levels. I lean towards agreeing with that article.
Most of us believe this isn’t good for the environment, the sea, and all of us.
Does it scare me? Yes, I have a Grandson coming this June and I pray everyday that he will be alright.
It went off in Japan, their levels are high in that area and it has effected many people there.
The bravery of the people who keep going in there, trying to stop this. I can’t even put into words how much they amaze and touch my heart.
Even though it is blowing our way, Japan is getting very high radiation.

I have been following the CPM and The FDA seems to be paying attention to areas that are not near as high as many other state readings in other parts of the country and these numbers have been continuously higher then the ones have been brought to the forefront ?.

I suppose the State workers that did testing raised concern in Va. and Penn., for the FDA was not capable/needed of doing either ?
So what states are getting high CPM may be getting higher does ?

I think it will depend on how high in the atmosphere the most part of the contamination is, If it is going over some areas out west and breaking up and losing wind speeds, faces crosswind agitations , down winds and heat from daylight, cool of nights, altitude is loss as well as wind stirring as it crosses the states causing the isotopes to start to drop from the lofty heights as it crosses the country.

Can someone please explain what these things mean? Beta Gross Count Rate? Gamma Energy Range 2-10? What number is fairly normal and what number should we be concerned about. Should we (in US) stay away from dairy products? Meat? I have a small child here in MD and also a 17 yr old living in CA. I also am being treated for hypothyroidism. Any answers would be greatly appreciated about the readings.

Gross alpha
Alpha particles are a type of ionizing radiation ejected by the nuclei of some unstable atoms. They are typically emitted from the elements uranium, radium, plutonium and thorium. The MCLG (federally recognized public health goal) for alpha particles is ZERO, however the legal limit (MCL) is set at 15 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). The EPA instructs water systems to “subtract” uranium from its “gross alpha” readings before they ae reported to you on an annual water quality report. This searchable database includes all results where Gross Alpha was reported in excess of 3.00 pCi/L
Gross beta
Beta particles are another form of ionizing radiation. They are smaller in size than alpha particles but can penetrate deeper into the body if consumed. The EPA says, “It is their excess energy, in the form of speed, that causes harm to living cells. When transferred, this energy can break chemical bonds and form ions.” Some examples of the different types of elements that give off beta particles are strontium-90 and tritium. The federally recognized public health goal (MCLG) for beta particles is zero. However, the legal limit (MCL) is set at 50 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). This searchable database includes all results where gross beta was reported inexcess of 4.00 pCi/L.
Uranium
Uranium is a naturally-occurring radioactive element and can be enriched to make nuclear weapons. All uranium isotopes are radioactive. The main use of uranium in the civilian sector is to fuel
commercial nuclear power plants, where fuel is typically enriched.
People who live near federal government facilities that made or tested nuclear weapons, or facilities that mine or process uranium ore or enrich uranium for reactor fuel, may have increased exposure to uranium. The EPA states, “Since uranium tends to concentrate in specific locations in the body, risk of cancer of the bone, liver cancer, and blood diseases (such as leukemia) are increased.
Inhaled uranium increases the risk of lung cancer.” Uranium is also toxic to the kidneys, as it’s also considered a toxic metal. The federally recognized public health goal (MCLG) for uranium is zero. However, the legal limit (MCL) is set at 30 mg/L (micrograms per liter).
Radium
Radium is a naturally-occurring radioactive metal. Its most common isotopes are radium-226, radium 224 and radium-228. Radium is a radionuclide formed by the decay of uranium and thorium in the environment. The EPA does not currently test for radium 224. The federally recognized public health goal (MCLG) for radium is zero. However, the legal limit (MCL) for all types of radium “combined” is set at 5 pCi/L (picocuries per liter).
The alpha radiation from radium is included in the gross alpha reading as described above.
This searchable database includes all results where radium 228 was measured in excess of 1.00 pCi/L.
Facts you should know
The above is a TCEQ database of every raw radiation test result for every water system in Texas, dating back to 2004. However, KHOU-TV has discovered that for decades the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has under-reported many of these radiation readings to utilities and their communities. This under-reporting took place for all radioactive contaminants in drinking water (known as radionuclides) and did not stop until 2009, after an EPA audit. Hence, the above raw readings may not match those found in the annual water quality report, called a Consumer Confidence Report, you receive from your water company.
