As nuclear plants age, NRC loosens safety regulations, Associated Press By Jeff Donn, June 20, 2011:
Federal regulators have been working closely with the nuclear power industry to keep the nation’s aging reactors operating within safety standards by repeatedly weakening those standards or simply failing to enforce them, an investigation by the Associated Press has found. [...]
The result? Rising fears that these accommodations by the NRC are significantly undermining safety and inching the reactors closer to an accident that could harm the public and jeopardize the future of nuclear power in the United States.
Examples abound. When valves leaked, more leakage was allowed — up to 20 times the original limit. When rampant cracking caused radioactive leaks from steam generator tubing, an easier test of the tubes was devised so plants could meet standards.
Failed cables. Busted seals. Broken nozzles, clogged screens, cracked concrete, dented containers, corroded metals, and rusty underground pipes — all of these and thousands of other problems linked to aging were uncovered in the AP’s yearlong investigation. [...]

By contrast, the safety standards for coal-fired power plants and for car- and diesel truck- emissions are being continuously increased. An agenda is in place no doubt.

Dumping water on the reactor during the night to make the days appear normal versus multiple criticalities.
Without full disclosure of what is happening, we’ll have to keep watching with extra pairs of underwear handy.

PROBABLY SO. DANG THAT’S ALOT OF SMOKE THOUGH. FREAKS ME OUT EVERYTIME!

To play devil’s advocate with what I just said above:
If they were merely adding water to a stable storage pool, there should be no steam emitted. The storage pool should never be allowed to become that hot before more water added. Why wait so long that water boils when added?
Troubling?…very much.

yes, im watching whoopie. And im trying tu understand what’zs happening. R4′s pool is boiling and radioactive wapor going to atmoshpere, right?

yes why.
AND I APOLOGISE. I ALWAYS OVER REACT. I’M SORRY.

You are Not overreacting at all. We are appropriately concerned….We are every time this happens. We are the conscious of the world. No apologies needed.

Some are under-reacting, thus the problems.
How to find that fine line between over and under.
I think if truth were known, it would be a Whoopie X 10³ reaction.

I see what looks like fog rolling in towards #4 towards the end of the recorded video. I guess that the cool air makes it easier to see the never ending evaporation plumes that are otherwise undetected. It is like a teakettle on high heat and constantly steaming.
I wonder how many pounds of radioactive material can be vaporized like this – assuming the fuel in these storage pools are damaged. Clever way to eventually just boil it all away it seems.

and mass media doesn’t interest this tragedy. Here in istanbul nobody knows this tragedy’s real dimensions, because of lack of real news.

Sorry to hear that WHY. The media is to blame for EVERY BIT OF THIS. They have continued to downplay it…now we’re all in big trouble. Like i posted above, member of the IAEA just came out saying:
WE NEED TO HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY.
Are they NUTS!!?!? WE’VE HAD IT SINCE 3/11!!

The big boys, who delude themselves into thinking they can run a planet top-down using Hitler’s modus operandi — and who are not running it very well — have control of the news-disseminating aparatus.
We are the new journalists—even if slightly untidy—but we’ll learn as we go and get the real news out—if it’s the last thing we do on this planet.

Is the 50 mile area downwind of this plume now a killing zone, or is it going up into the jetstream?
Hard to imagine the msm news offices watching this right now and discussing why not to show it.

@Why. Don’t worry it’s just Tepco “venting” #4 to reduce the radioactivity inside the building. (They said today the levels were far too high to let workers in there)
They do it almost every night now.
Tepco’s way of dealing with excessive amounts of astronomically high radiation seems to be to let it all out.
Filters and stuff are way too expensive.
As is bringing in more storage tanks for the water…why sweat, just chuck it in the sea…who will know?
Report Comment
nomade, they don’t really have to “vent” it, do they? As the roof / walls are missing, they can just step aside….and watch….it’s uncontrollable, and I SO feel for these poor souls..

“Tepco’s way of dealing with excessive amounts of astronomically high radiation seems to be to let it all out.”
Let it all hang out – that’s what we’re discovering. What a foolish waste of money, all those safety precautions and containments. We’re proving the concept of the Open Air Reactor Multiplex in this planetary experiment. Who needs containment, we just need to banish bad thoughts. I propose “bad thinking” be defined as “witchcraft” and be punishable by dunking (waterboarding until happy). Who isn’t happy thinking about cheaper nuclear power? With no containment or disposal issues anymore, the price will plummet, why we won’t even have to meter it.
