Seattle Times (AP), Craig Welch, July 24, 2014: Once-common marine birds disappearing from our coast [...] a significant ecological shift in our region — a major decline in once-abundant marine birds. [...] the number of everyday marine birds here has plummeted dramatically in recent decades. [...] several new studies now also link many dwindling marine bird populations to what they eat — especially herring, anchovies, sand lance [...] Some forage-fish species, such as herring, are a fraction of what they once were. [...] There’s certainly no shortage of crashes [...] “It’s one thing to have a rare species decline,” said Joe Gaydos, with the SeaDoc Society. “[...] We’re talking about big, common species, and a lot of them.” [...] it wasn’t clear whether this was a local or continental- scale problem, said Scott Wilson, a biologist with Environment Canada. It’s both: Up and down the West Coast, the winter breeding population [of Western grebes] is half what it was in 1975. [...] since 1970 [Puget Sound's biggest] herring stock has crashed, with more than 90 percent of the population all but gone. [...] some scientists believe the herring problem itself may be far worse than others acknowledge. [...] Wayne Landis, at Western Washington University [...] found that while Puget Sound herring used to live eight to 10 years, they now survive only to age 3 or 4. [...] “They don’t get old anymore,” he said. That could be the result of disease or toxic contamination or other changes [...] Usually after a bust, herring eventually recolonize, Landis said. The question now: Is this bust different [...] “Something’s happening on a big level,” [Gaydos] said. “But what is it?”

KCET, July 23, 2014: Feds to Consider Ban on Bluefin Tuna Fishing — [NOAA] is opening a formal rulemaking process to determine whether it should add Pacific bluefin tuna to its list of fish species that must be released immediately if caught. [...] Pacific bluefin spawn in the western Pacific off the coast of Japan [...] Mexico closed its Pacific bluefin fishery for 2014 [...]

San Diego Union Tribune, July 16, 2014: Mexico’s sudden and unforeseen banning of bluefin tuna fishing [...] shut down bluefin tuna fishing at the height of the summer season [...]

San Diego Union Tribune, July 14, 2014: [S]tatement from the Mexican government: [...] the capture of Blue Fin Tuna in Mexican waters is forbidden for the remainder of the 2014 calendar year. Any incidental catches are to be released. This measure will be strictly enforced [...]

And the bio accumulation in humans? I don't really want to know. Every week I have an infusion of human immune globulin to keep my neuropathy in check. It comes from plasma clinics. The people who give blood there are significantly homeless living outdoors.

This could turn out to be an end of life event. Hell it already is for many species. And we are at the top. But we may starve before we die of cancers as the food chain collapses.

All the lies have done is delay the collapse of Japan's economy which was fragile enough already. It will still happen though. And when it does it won't be contained to the far east.

There at least should be some poignant art and music birthed from this nuclear stupidity as humanity suffers and dies……

        • Most people don't want to know.. because the truth hurts, creates uncomfortable feelings that people don't know to do with. What to do with the guilt and shame that knowing the truth creates, because we are all part of the problem? None of this is being dealt with, so it is all swept under the rug, or into the ocean..

Bury the truth, deny it, long live the nuclear industry. Let's build 4,000 more nuclear plants… solar, wind, tides, water, is all dangerous, toxic, and unreliable… (sarcasm)

Learning to see and wake up is not always a 'pleasant' feel good thing.. Reality sucks on some levels. Take the red pill anyway. Learn to see beyond the pain…

That is the spirit Dr. G!!! Thank you for all you do …

Let's see … "something is happening on a big scale … but what is it???"

            Really? Is he serious??

Don't ask ol' Potbelly, Jeff Immelt. He wont't tell you.

Couldn't be the radiation from three uncontrolled core melts … now could it?

Here is an infamous quote from my current selection from the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution library, "The Nuclear Power Controversy" ed. Arthur Murphy, from 1976, pub. The American Assembly, Columbia University (where Fermi put his first atomic piles together, in 1942 …

This is pre-TMI material, right after Rasmussen produced his "Bullshit for Hire" Reactor Safety Study at MIT (1975) and when plutonium recycle was still on the table. The authors, David Bodansky and Fred H. Schmidt, both in favor of developing the nuclear option for base load power; insisting that the only alternative was coal; so went the lie; musing on the problems with public perception about the safety of nuclear power plants:

"We expect it will take decades of safe operation before all the doubts wither. In the meantime, perhaps some consolation can be taken from the fact that even in the extremely unlikely event of a major accident, it does not seem likely to be a catastrophe of unparalleled dimensions." (p.54)

            Major Fail!!

Such was the bogus logic of the deluded, psychopathic nuclear boosters, at the time.

            Where are these assholes now?

I think the denial is there because if the human mind expands far enough to take in the full ecological and time dimensions of this utter catastrophe, the flame of consciousness begins to burn at the edges. If the mind expands that far, it bumps up against such a tremendous pain that it is intolerable. As soon as the pain becomes intolerable the mind retreats from understanding the vast consequences of this utter catastrophe. Those in authority who are complicit in this denial of Fukushima specifically, and the effects of low level radiation more generally, are in some regard protecting human psyches from extraordinarily disturbing and painful information, perhaps the most painful and disturbing that humanity or any other species has yet received. I am not excusing them, I am just trying to understand the basis of the denial. Money, yes. Power, yes. Ignorance. yes. Multi-million dollar propaganda, yes. Self-inflicted permanent wounding of the DNA of all species? No, not so much. It doesn't make sense. The refusal of authorities and decision-makers to act and speak out powerfully in the face of the ongoing catastrophe of the past 70 years of the nuclear age is, at some level, entirely baffling to me. Entirely.

                @Arizonan: baffling, yes … but understandable, too;

Imagine this: A nation of fairly normal, literate, technologically advanced people, is whipped up into a frenzy – by a hideous yet brilliant Propaganda campaign that blames everyone's problems on a tiny ethnic minority, so that this minority is then exterminated in industrial-designed and fired ovens … sound baffling to you??? It happened … and it belies the power of Propaganda, or outright lies, given to you wholesale by a central State-financed propaganda operation.

                This is the exact same situation we have with nuclear power here, now, in 2014 Amerika, USA, Global Hegemon, ISIS Fighter of last resort, or whatever you want to call our paranoid and toxic, drunk with money and power, dysfunctional capitalist Leviathon of a nation, which we used to love and honor;

Game almost over … if we don't throw off the scales of the nuclear lies … we are under the thrall of nuclear power … it is the one all-consuming evil which CAN poison the entire planet, as indeed it already has.

Our resident MOFOTROLL cannot explain away a continuously rising background radiation insult to all of us coming from his well-paying (with blood money) industry's leaking monstrosities, globally … he glibly squeals about his big blood money pay check … and even calls us baby killers for supporting abortion rights …

he's downright audacious … but then people who take blood money are that way …

I really wonder what's happening. Hadn't seen a bluejay bird in 20+ years, now suddenly we have them and a lot of other birds we haven't seen in ages. All I can remember is everywhere in this metro suburban areas there were lots of hawks, owls, and vultures ( coyotes too). At any time you could see a hawk circling, just look up. I suspected they were responsible for the bird decline, ive seen a hawk take a grown bluejay before. Suddenly I don't see any birds of prey! Apex predators, hmmm. I wonder if there has been an influx of birds from surrounding states due to drought etc. and a decline in prey birds due to accumulation of… Hmmm?

Nowhere, I repeat, NOWHERE, are the words RADIATION, FALLOUT or Fukushima MELTDOWNS mentioned.

For anyone to believe, for single second, that the ongoing out of control meltdowns with no end in sight (x3) have not affected birds (living things) either directly or indirectly is living in denial of an insidious global reality.

For it not to be mentioned, by authors who 'claim' to be environmental journalists such as KCET's Chris Clarke, is a travesty against humanity. It plays into the future robbing crime called Nuclear Power that has now spanned over 60 years.

Why are numerous species experiencing mass die offs? mystery..

Seals NEVER tested for the major radiation nuclides, probably no other animals tested either. Has anyone gotten the U of Alaska to FINISH analysis of the sick animals they were asked to test for radiation in 2012? The last I heard, the U of A said they DID NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT necessary for this kind of testing. They only said the NORMAL looking seals were not sick!!! And the poor Utah eagles..anyone testing those birds. Well..it was mentioned they were testing..but we never see the results..Data is important!! REAL data, tests.

Anyone doing the tests for PU/AM/Cesium and the host of other poisons coming from Fukushima? Wish a valid researcher, not a troll, with REAL data from REAL tests would post the URL.

Interesting take TIS. I will agree that the poor people around me seem to understand the damage that has been done.

Interesting word choice, "altruistic." In the 1977 Ralph Nader book "The Menace of Nuclear Energy" a GE CEO from the early 70's is quoted as saying, in an annual report, "Our motives regarding nuclear power are not entirely altruistic. As a company we can book six time the profits on the sales of a nuclear plant compared to a normal fossil fuel thermal energy plant, since we control the design, the construction, the fuel service, and the maintenance …"

Dirty rotten bastard. GE can go to hell, with their patron, J.P. Morgan.

Ned Coffin, my great uncle, Harvard Class of 1897, GE founder Charles Albert Coffin's only son, who died young while working for his dad's company, in Kansas City, of Peritonitis, and for whom I'm named, would have said, "No!" to Nuclear Power … or at least I like to think so …

The magnetosphere around earth is weakening at a faster pace than previously thought. A pole shift is underway. That means more radiation from cosmic rays and particles from earth. Aviation probably ruins the ozone layer. Above-ground testing and nuclear power have increased background. Then we have increased earthquakes along the Pacific ring of fire. The Sun's activity is decreased but the core of the earth is interacting with with the crust, releasing methane gases through fissures. Oceans are polluted with pesticides and fertilizers. We have acidification. Deepsea drilling release huge amounts of NORM – check that source of radiation. Coal plants, methane released by cattle, looks like a perfect storm – overfishing and other tampering with the environment effect the marine food chain. One effect magnifies another.

Mankind may not be entirely to blame. Maybe we are destined to experience a mass extinction event before we can do ourselves in with a nuclear war. Events underway in our galaxy and solar system may have determined some of these changes.

The necessity of protection by the magnetosphere will result in 2 -8 new magnetic poles, one or more around the equator. Earth wobble, etc. are also negative factors.

I have seen no pelicans this Summer. I see some bees, fewer each year, relatively sterile tide pools. Fewer birds. On it goes…. more people, of course.

It is really frightening, Doc. The more you see us clinging to the third rock from the Sun, the more pathetic the human condition is. Especially, when some gnarlers are stomping on our fingers as we dangle from a cliff, holding on by our fingernails.

12 million years ago, during the Miocene, large volcanoes spewed ashes over North America. Huge lakes covered Barstow and El Centro. Horses were the size of dogs, and dogs stood 7 feet at the shoulder. Camels and saber-toothed cats roamed, between eruptions, which can be seen by compressed layers of volcanic tuft, a chalky white substance that compresses down to several inches thick from ten feet or more. Digging these fossils out, gives one the idea that climate changes and that life forms are very temporary over a million years or more. Some changes have come abruptly. There is much that science is just now discovering about the tectonic plates, isostatic readjustment, and earth-sun and other gravitational changes where Jupiter, Saturn and the Sun affect the earth. The core of the earth is dynamic. We are seeing reflections in the mantle and crust, and everything from wobble to the weakening of magnetosphere. These changes are noted at high altitudes in changes in the jet stream. Really humbling. .. yet even more reasons for not changing the balance of nature for the worst. We should all work together rather that trying to conquer what might be a dying planet.

Thank you for this comment. Fukushima Daiichi is an unfolding horror story, but it is undoubtedly true that the forces beyond our control are immensely, almost unimaginably power. I can see in my mind's eye the televised images of large, burning houses carried inland on the tsunami to this day. The video records of that day are emotionally overwhelming, and changed my way of thinking. Apropos nuclear power, the message is clear to anyone with the capacity to think honestly: forces of nature are so immense that NPPs cannot be made safe enough to operate. Humanity has an enormous challenge to survive even without them. With them, our chances are greatly diminished.

There is also likely something happening called "crustal displacement." That the Earth's crust itself, at least in the northern hemisphere, is slipping a few degrees further south. Which is apparently prat of why the Sun in Spring in Greenland started rising two days early for the first time. There is also a youtube from someone with a compass who clocked the shifts out, and deduced crustal disaplacement. And crops previously grown in more southern latitudes can now be planted further north. Freaky.

I do astrology, which may mean nothing to others, except that suddenly readings started being a year and a half off mathematically. I can't read unless I re-set charts to a more southern latitude. It was so strange, that I started researching why!

Of course, the poor animals don't have internet and cannot even have a clue what hits them — it's just by instinct and bad things happen to them.

There seem to be several disruptive changes happening at once. And geoengineering is a TERRIBLE contributor! See Dane Wigington on that. He's the best.

Correct. NASA has some websites that contain excellent photos, videos and explanations of these changes in the crust. The Goddard Center is considered to be too focused on just anthropomorphic climate change. The NASA astrophysicists at JPL, Cal tech, and by means of thirty years of studies by three major satellites studying gravitational effects, have revealed much new information. CO2 is not our only problem, unfortunately, because, if it were, it can be changed, at least theoretically. It looks like there are other complex factors at work. The crust is slipping. A wobble could create waves one mile high, for example. This is not my field…. but the information is getting out there, if you try to understand it.

The real revisionists would like to blot out the Cold War. It happened. Above ground testing happened.

No one is saying there is no radiation in the environment. The real key is this and please be mindful.

If we are talking 1e10 km^3 of atmosphere, and kg quantity of radioactive material, we are only talking about 1e-16 gms per m^3 of any radioactive material. That is a very low concentration. Barely detectable by anyone's standards. But still detectable.

This is what is waiting for any countries that drink this Nuclear Cabal Poison and it will certainly expand worldwide, since all manmade machines, and all these Nuclear Rattle Traps are manmade machines, and they all will eventually break down! :( This is representative of current Nuclear safety measures.. :(

Here is what awaits your countries.. :( Only idiots would follow/want this nightmare inside their country! :)

Arsenic catalyzes the effects of ionizing radiation. It is used in radiation therapy. Certain target areas are pre-treated with low level arsenic, then the bad cells can be zapped using less radiation. Healthy cells are more "protected" with less radiation being used.

Ionizing radiation does much of its damage by creating free radicals within the cell. Peroxide is one component. It stands to reason that a myriad of chemicals and heavy metals make radiation worse; in fact studies show that these pollutants work synergistically to damage immunity and facilitate cancer. Mutations and epigenetic damage is just now being understood – long before the nuclear energy went to market, of course.

Stock it is a well known part of the agriculture industry to bring in the bees for pollination ..in New Hampshire the apple growers have them in every year , I remember one year on my farm I had , it was in the late nineties we had Practically no honey bees , but they are not our only pollinators either .
I want to say that it was the bee industry that first picked up the problems with the mites , then there was talk that it was radiation from phones that was causing colony collapse , they are the ones that are the canary on the coal mines ..
This is also a billion dollar industry

clams…they also were subjected to vast detailed research for military uses. Studying their ability to fly through the air as they do, defying gravity. Their sensory apparatus, their vision and their intelligence and connectivity to each other. The book, The Secret Life of Bees made me realize how extensive that research and experimentation was. And how cruel and ultimately disasterous to bees it was, but most people have no idea of the experiments that have been and are done on living things.

How could that have ever turned out well?

I think Washington has a ton of nuclear engineers and former-nuclear-employees-turned-shill-cheerleaders, which is why there is never Anything related to fukushima or radiation in regards to these Many Many stories out of our pathetic state.

It would actually be kind of hilarious if it weren't so sad, theres a huge elephant in the room in Every one of these stories, like they only wrote half the article or maybe only half makes it past the edicensors.

Again and Again and Again. Craziness with the environment and wildlife, things humans have never seen occur before, of course they are testing, no danger to people, thanks for reading.

Part of the problem is that all these former nuclear people can babble for hours about how safe it is and was, no possible health effects, cause of course they would have been told. Low low levels, bananas and X-rays and airplane flights.

But Washington State will probably never come around, too much entrenched pro-nuclear in this state, I could see humanity being unable to viably reproduce or the complete collapse of the Pacific in 5 or 10 years and the Washington State of Educated Stupidity still putting out stories about how they are researching this or that interesting animal behavior and results are forthcoming, and still never mentioning radiation or fuku.

Now assuming even all of the Fukushima mass gets out into the atmosphere you are only talking about 1e-15 gms fissile/gm atmosphere

      That is the plain fact.

      1e-15 is a 0. followed by 14 zeros.

MFX, that is flawed logic. Fallout falls out. As a professional, and even as a layperson, you would know that.

two grams of Cesium-137 can turn a square mile into an uninhabitable radioactive exclusion zone. A professional nuke safety engineer would know this.

the 1100 square mile uninhabitable exclusion zone that surrounds the Chernobyl reactor has about 100 curies per square mile. 1000 miles non inhabitable, and Russia isnt going err on the side of caution. Is that a small amount of land? Glad its not YOUR land?

How many curies in Fukushima? You have the answers, tell us. 300 million curies? Enough to potentially make 3 million square miles uninhabitable, as a rough estimate?

You know that nobody believes your pro nuke drivel. Why not come up with some real numbers and prove your worth? How much land/ocean/people can be contaminated by Fukushima? Go ahead, give a number by the book.

Reactor No. 3 had 32 MOX assemblies, reportedly enriched to 6% or 330 kg of Pu239? How many people/animals can die by inhaling hot particles of plutonium from 330 kg source?

1 gram of plutonium can overdose ten million civilians. Anybody can make the calculation, but I want YOU to do it and post the answer for everyone to see. Your time is short, professional nuker. At least redeem yourself with some numbers that dont lie

MFX does not answer questions or give numbers. Why? Is he a professional?

            The 2003 International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) revised its Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources. A dirty bomb consisting of 50 grams, set off near the white house would contaminate 5 square miles to dangerous levels and cause over 300 deaths. From this accepted criteria, one could extrapolate the deadly effects of Fukushima, being a dirty bomb of grand proportion. Why wont you confirm your expertise by giving us some numbers MFX instead of just being a pest of empty pro nuke words? Give us some numbers or get lost

Guess the Pacific is not as vast as once thought. The Japanese have been overfishing the Pacific for decades and now have shot themselves in the foot with Daiichi poisoning their own fishing waters but Japan still needs to take whales for 'research'.

The US is quickly reaching 3rd world status when Mexico has to lead the way in conservation of Pacific fishing, in this case.

    Link from the ENEnews post:
"…About 90 percent of the Pacific bluefin catch is consumed in Japan, where one 489-pound bluefin caught in 2012 brought about $3,500 per pound at a fish market in Tokyo. That kind of economic incentive has driven aggressive fishing, with the result being a steep decline in Pacific bluefin numbers. An assessment of the species' status in January 2013 found that the Pacific bluefin population had declined by more than 96 percent since the global fishing industry started targeting the fish…"
    http://www.kcet.org/news/redefine/rewild/fish/feds-to-consider-ban-on-bluefin-tuna-fishing.html

BTW, any pole shift is not a certainty. The poles could drift, as they are doing now, without flipping even though GPS navigation has to be continuously adjusted. And the Japanese Great Quake did throw the Earth off its axis enough to shorten atomic kept clock time by milliseconds besides having to redraw the Japanese coastline because some of it subducted and shifted.

Sunlight deprivation is NOT something that can be ignored, and with so much CS137 NOT changed to Barium137 yet, were all screwed. Big time. Laugh all you wish folks, they debunked Carl Sagan. This does NOT mean there will be no nuclear winter, and that you can just keep ignoring that reality also. Proof is what we need PROOF is what I have found. And has anyone bothered to see the truth?

Is it possible to create a sub folder on your excellent pink sky site for plant mutation photos? Without creating an over large burden on you? I know what you're going through, dear friend, it saddens all of us.
If this is not possible, perhaps someone else? I can photograph some real doozies from any tree in town.

DEADLINE AUG 3. Hi all, am posting this here because the Comments buttons on the Petitions and Low Level Rad forums have been disabled. The link I am providing here makes it very easy to comment on the EPA proposal to relax radiation standards in the US, when in fact we all know they should be strengthened. This link has the docket number, a draft letter you can use or change as you wish. The organisation behind the campaign, the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, has a long and venerable history of resisting all things nuclear, esp nuclear power. They are also well worth donating a few dollars to, if people have it. They do good work and fight the good fight against the nuclear industry. Here is your opportunity to comment now on the insane plan by the US govt to relax radiation standards: http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/5502/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=17863

Me thinks the House of Saud would be antithetical to nuclear. What can be said? All nuclear is essentially a defensive posture to the probability of embargo by nations with the power to restrict energy conventional. Nations want to be secure in their energy paradigm. Except it is a false sense of security obviously because it can be used against them right on their own soil. So to engage in proliferation is at the consequence of the party so inclined. It is like providing the criminal with the power, the weapon by which he/she will use to hold you hostage, economically, politically and figuratively.
