Title: Pilgrim nuclear plant loses power again
Source: Boston Globe
Author: Erin Ailworth

h/t Anonymous tip
Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth once again lost power Sunday, after having it restored for several hours following an offsite outage Friday night. Three diesel generators are now providing back-up power to the facility’s safety systems, said Carol Wightman, a spokeswoman for Entergy Corp. [...]
Wightman said workers are still determining exactly what went wrong, but the outage may have been weather-related.
The plant was first shutdown late Friday when it lost its “offsite power supplies” in the middle of the snowstorm. Electricity returned to Pilgrim at 10:55 a.m. today, according to Entergy, but went back out later this afternoon, and before the facility was returned to service. [...]

Nukers like to spout off as if GREED is not the most factor in nuke operations. Human greed, denial, ignorance, wishful thinking, and just egoistical power. I have worked with various government organizations for decades, and at around 28YO I realized that gov people will go as far out of their as necessary to make the worst possible decisions to prove that they have power. I also came to the realization that I can't change that.
Nuke + Human = disaster
You think there were "a few" nuke disasters since 1950, actually there were 99 before Fukushima, here is a list.

A nuclear accident can and will eventually cause the collapse of the US economy, if something else does not cause the collapse of this greed based international empire…
All empires fall, it is just a question of time and cause.

Sad to say, you're right, mm. Strip away the lies, look at the facts, and we've got about two years left, maybe less.

In other words they don't have a clue. They're not even sure if the weather caused it.

Lets face it they don't know what went wrong AND…their first plan of action is to lie….so WE won't know what happened….EVER.

We'll know eventually. It'll be too late, of course, but we will find out.
Can you imagine the scramble taking place, to avoid a nuclear meltdown in the most populated area of the US? And half the scramble is people trying to avoid any blame.
This is what's called a 'clusterf&%k'.

There are a couple of recipes for snow ice cream, but I perfer the version made with condensed milk.
Here are two recipes.

Senator Wolf calls for Pilgrim nuclear plant shutdown
“When you look at the benefits of a plant like Pilgrim, you have to look at the risk, and in a case where the risks are as high, and the consequences are so ugly, even if the likelihood is so small, you really have to question the benefits of having a plant in our backyard,” Wolf said.
Wolf said if this was a brand new proposed plant it would never be built in Plymouth, close to so many people. Pointing to two 13-year olds in the audience he said, “When you’re 32 you’re going to have to figure out what you’re going to do with a 60-year old piece of technology. Our generation is kicking the can down the road.”

NRC evnet report issued. I'm paying attention to "The loss of off-site power resulted in de-energization of both Reactor Protection System (RPS) channels resulting in a reactor scram signal and isolation of shutdown cooling." Oyster Creek appeared to have same problem, in this case it would seem shutdown cooling was only lost for 12 minutes, but sounds like a significant design fault to me.
"On Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 1405 [EST], with the reactor at 0% core thermal power, all control rods fully inserted, and in cold shutdown conditions, the plant experienced a loss of off-site power. With Pilgrim Station aligned to off-site power via the start-up transformer (SUT), a fault on the 'B' phase of the SUT was experienced due to suspected falling ice striking the phase's insulator. This resulted in the tripping of the feeder breaker, ACB-102, and the loss of power to 4160 KV buses A1 through A4. Emergency Diesel Generators (EDGs) 'A' and 'B' auto-started as designed and are powering emergency buses.
"The loss of off-site power resulted in de-energization of both Reactor Protection System (RPS) channels resulting in a reactor scram signal and isolation of shutdown cooling. At 1418, shutdown cooling was returned to service. All other plant systems responded as designed. Station personnel are in the process of establishing back-up power in accordance with plant procedures.

From NRC event-notification update on the weekend power cut. Note the last sentence, this would seem to support that there's no irradiated fuel pool cooling on emergency generators. Normally this isn't a big deal as it would be matter of weeks to start of boiling, more to loss of all water. If a full core has just been offloaded into the pool as was the case in Fuku, the margin before alternative cooling has to be arranged falls to days, however. I find it curious they mention the trend without stating temperaturs though.
"Pilgrim terminated the Unusual Event and has transitioned to recovery effective at 10:55 AM on 02/10/2013. Offsite power has been restored to safety-related and non-safety-related electrical buses through the station Startup Transformer via a single 345 KV line. The other two offsite power sources remain out of service. The emergency diesel generators have been secured and are in standby. Residual heat removal is in shutdown cooling mode maintaining the reactor in cold shutdown. Fuel Pool Cooling is in service with fuel pool coolant temperatures trending down.

901 matches.
Although, Google has gotten brain-damaged and you can't sort results by date, probably best you can do is limit it to some time period. Of course there's loads of other "interesting" stuff besides the event notification reports.
As an aside, while checking todays NRC event reports, there was this little gem: "The effect of the discovered non-conservatisms in choked flow rate values was offset by unintended conservatisms in the GEH recommended formulation for calculating pressure drop across the MSL flow restrictor. As a result, GEH has determined that the flow-instrument pressure remain at conservative values (which would ensure that the associated NTSPs and AVs expressed in psid also remain at conservative values), and the MSL high-flow trip will function as designed."
In translation, they found an error in the safety calculations for all GE BWR reactors. However, they subsequently found out a second error in the calculations that cancels out the first error, so there's no need to worry. Move along, nothing to see here.

Yep…one of the recent articles too said that during the period it was up before going down this latest time, is that they still were keeping it down for maintenance they were working on prior. Of course the link is dead now (http://www.patriotledger.com/news/x1522320446/Unusual-event-ends-at-Pilgrim-nuclear-plant back up) which is another Google/news problem, but that made me wonder because it was up prior to the blizzard, didn't know if it had anything to do with the previous valve leaks etc. or if an error in reporting. "probably best you can do is limit it to some time period" Yep exactly, by looking every day..lol

AP-PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Shortly after off-site power had been restored, Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station lost power again, two days after being knocked out by the blizzard.
Pilgrim and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that power resumed on Sunday, restored from one of the three off-site lines. As work was continuing to restore the other two lines, Pilgrim officials said off-site power was interrupted.
Power was again being provided by diesel generators, as it was since the storm disrupted electric transmission, which resulted in an automatic plant shutdown on Friday.
A spokesman says personnel were working on the cause of the interruption.

Such a gamble allowing reactors to exist. Meltdowns happen, as do plane and train wrecks, but reactors spew killer amounts of radiation on unsuspecting citizens.

Twelve anti-nuke protesters go on trial
"Fourteen antinuclear activists attempted to deliver a letter last May to Entergy Corporation regarding the clear and present dangers at its forty year old Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. The Pilgrim reactor is the same make and model as those which failed at Fukushima. The letter was refused and the activists were arrested for criminal trespass
Witnesses include Pulitzer Prize winning author Christopher Hedges, who will argue the need for citizen activism for the greater good, and Dr. Helen Caldicott, renowned physician and scholar, who will describe the health dangers of this nuclear facility."
