TV Asahi Headline: Odawara, Kanagawa coast humpback whale of 6m length (Jan. 2, 2012)
Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture on the coast, found that the whale was launched about six meters long. Around 6:00 yesterday morning, was from a man to fish, “which was launched in the beach whale,” and there were 110 reported. The whale is about 6 m in length, was already dead. According to experts, seen as a male humpback whale, is that after a few days after death. Technical Assistant National Science Museum, Masayuki Ishii, “probably under 1 year old male child,” “(How long after death Q.) I think a few days. I think I was shipwrecked bodies” in the coastal neighborhood families gathered, early New Year, or so uncommon in a stranded whale watching, had been taking photos. Odawara is that you kept the whales on the coast to determine the disposition strategy.

sort of off topic but the top three stories today, This one, the bird story and the trash all have one thing in common. “Goodbye blue sky”.
As a person who is physically challenged to move I enjoy a line of bird feeders hanging outside the window of where I spend most of my time. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but I am NOT seeing the same collection of birds I usually during the winter, it is substantially smaller! The other thing I noticed was the hummingbirds: I usually have a dozen or so that lurk in my yard due to feeders and planting to induce them to hang out. They mysteriously went away much sooner than their usual retreat from the cold weather.
I would almost guess the smaller the creature the greater the risk. To bad it appears (based on the sea mammal stories)that it knows no boundries and will destroy whatever it comes in contact with. Also people with immune issues, such as myself probably have drawn the shortest straw in this disgusting lottery of doom.
Hugs to you oscar. I’m also a bird watcher. I feed them all, including the Crows. That said, I’ve been watching them intensely these days because of what we know. Nothing noticeable yet….tg.
We have seen a big excess of crows overhead, around here that usually means something is dead and attaining a rancid state.

I will try to get more pixx in that album, literally I live in the woods of Maine in what some people refer to as “mountains”. To bad being a crip makes it to hard to maintain the place.
Sounds wonderful. You? not so much. Keep chin up.
& apologies for being several thousand miles off topic….
I dont think the Admin cares TOO much. Afterall your 1st post was about the birds in your area.

Nothing worse to discredit a thread of information than to have your token dope smokin advocates. Nice job Oscar.

oh gee sorry. What I choose to use as medicine is my choice, just so happens I live in a state that allows it. Now ask me if I would give it and all the pills up to have my health back. Fortunately the state also set up laws to prevent discrimination, hint hint..
I made what worse? Dope smokin? LOL Dude, it was a joke. Wow! Is someone insecure today?
Well then…Oops! Sorry about that hbjon!
yep sorry… words are open to many ways of translation, if not I would have gotten better than a c in literature….and well honestly I do have my fair share of issues, the po-po in my town loathes my for my choices and are waiting for me to screw up: I’m a weee bit old for their games.

Our bird population seems short this year also.
I still have not seen a single frog in my backyard since March. Strange for North Florida.
first noticed in late March, early April, the lack of insects.. for spring, we had nearly none.. no mosquitoes or anything else flying around the porch lights.. it amazed me that no one else seemed to notice..until I mentioned it.. then it was…”you are right” got a small comeback around end of July. …it amazes me how many are completely out of touch with their environment. Even the sky looked different.. nobody notices.. sadly makes me think we do not deserve this planet. “we should stop the world and let off all the fools..” INXS
hummingbirds were suspiciously absent this year in the quantities I am used to
Still plenty of birds where I live. Just the wrong kind of birds this time of year. Cardinals are back and happily setting up housekeeping, bluebirds and indigos left early, hummingbirds stayed late, woodpeckers eating odd things (holly berries, not usual fare). It’s been unseasonably warm through Christmas, now finally in the teens at night. Crows and ravens numerous as always, bluebirds late to strip the holly (not here yet).
I think that’s the odd weather, not much freezing through December where last year there was a foot of snow on Christmas Eve, year before snow in mid-December that stayed on the ground until mid-March. Don’t think Fukushima has anything to do with it.

So glad you posted. I’ll put it up at HP. You do an incredible job xdoc. SO F**KING SAD.
I think with xdrfox’s extensive relentless reporting of animal casualties I usually think of him as Brother Nature. Really consider the volume of deaths he’s chronicled on one page.
His research is priceless data for scientists who should be using it to understand and correct what’s causing it.

Your right. Even WITH France debating nukes, so what? Fukushima is the game changer for the planet. I might say yehaw but truthfully I dont feel that way…not really. TOO DAMN LATE. Wish I woulda woke up years ago to this deadly form of power. Oh well, I AM AWAKE NOW and wont stop fighting to END ALL NUKES.
The Goddess’ not going to help us. Our species departed – long ago – from her righteous path.
The horrors that are about to be released upon all living creatures (on this planet) promises to be nothing-short of overwhelming. In a panicked attempt to keep the reactors under some-semblance of control, staggering quantities of radioactive water were dumped off the shores of Fukushima prefecture. These same waters have been (for hundreds-of-millions of years) the annual transit routes for hundreds – if not thousands – of migrating species of sea creatures. Those that were not immediately decimated by the radioactive plume, were – as they’ve always been – consumed by waiting ‘predators’. They, in-turn, were consumed by other – dependent – lifeforms. On-and-up the food chain, did the toxic promise of mismanaged technology travel. In a mere matter of months, hidden death made its way into adjacent ocean regions. What we thought might take decades (or at most years), took only months!
No contingency existed for the processing of millions of gallons of radioactive water. Not unlike the BP-Gulf of Mexico catastrophe, it was the choice of images of power plants burning out of control being broadcast throughout the world, or, quiet use of the ocean’s as the repository of so-much stupidity. They knew they could buy more time to coverup their endless arrogance if they could only keep this catastrophe in the dark.
It should be apparent, the Goddess will have none of it! She never left our world, but simply awaited true humility and contrition from her ‘elevated’ children. For all of our unabashed exploitation of those with no means of defense, “We have entered the time when all things turn against us.” And neither castle nor cave will offer refuge from her righteous wrath…
AFTERSHOCK,
Is there more, did it get cut off at bottom ?
This is why it’s not Main stream news ! DOOM !
@xdrfox: No, it didn’t get cut-off.
Are they extinct now? That must’ve been the toughest little whale in the ocean. Put a solar panel over the little guy and harness some of that energy.
If we could wash the oceans with our tears don’t you think we would try?
Or purify the air with one shout then we would let lose a cry that would shake those in power and un-knot the noose.
Earth is counting her losses, maimed and bleeding, the bosses leading us deaf and blind pretending they haven’t lit the fuse,
acting freely to abuse all life and profiting from the promotion of strife and endless war
as if immune from the planets’ fate,so we must take them out before it’s too late.

I missed this article.
I remember that. Minkes are baleen whales, eat zooplankton and krill mostly. Since radioactive contamination will tend to concentrate first very low on the food chain, this could translate into baleen whales being sort of a bellwether for contamination problems. Sperm whales eat mostly squid and fish, travel around all of earth’s oceans and seas. The North Sea is already highly contaminated by Britain’s nuclear dross, and all the oil and Corexit in the Gulf of Mexico can’t help. We’ve used the oceans as a garbage dump for so long it’s a wonder anything still lives there.

Stop Using Japanese Disaster Relief Funds for Whaling
Petitions, Politics — By Callie Brazil on December 11, 2011 8:29 am
Target: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda
Goal: Urge the Japanese government to stop using money meant for disaster relief and rebuilding purposes for whaling efforts.
Since the tsunami in March the Japanese government has allotted a total of 18 trillion yen for tsunami relief efforts. Of this total, almost 500 billion yen have been siphoned off for projects not related to the disaster relief effort—one of these being a massive whale hunt.
As reported by The Huffington Post, Japan is allocating 2.3 million yen (or $2.9 million) from its tsunami relief budget to fund a whaling hunt in the Antarctic. On this trip, the Japanese government claims fishermen will aim to kill up to 900 whales. Japanese government officials argue …

*PHOTOS* Dead Humpback Whale Calf
Thu, Jan 5th, 2012 | Marine Life, Research
Early on 2 January, a baby humpback whale washed up on the beach in Odawara, which is about 60km south of where I am in Japan.
Yesterday, I travelled to the site to meet friends from the scientific community, who were planning to perform an autopsy to try to ascertain the cause of death. As it turned out, the local authorities didn’t have the proper equipment available to handle the whale, so the autopsy had to be postponed for a few days.
Fortunately, it’s the middle of winter here, so the carcass will keep to some extent, but the laws of nature dictate that additional deterioration will occur by the time dissection takes place.
Also, the cetacean pathologists will be at a meeting outside of Japan …
