[...] Researchers from the Fukushima Medical University studied reports submitted to the Fukushima prefectural government by 34 institutions for the elderly and found that the death rate over eight months in 2011 was 2.4 times that of the same period in 2010.
Furthermore, there was a spike in deaths during the three months immediately following the disaster to three times the level of a year earlier. [...]
During this period, pneumonia accounted for 40 percent of deaths, whereas it usually accounts for only 10 percent of deaths of those aged 65 or more.
The high toll was likely caused by insufficient disaster preparations and the effect on frail individuals of uncomfortable conditions in evacuation shelters.
Of all 1,770 residents living at the 34 institutions at the time of the disaster, 295 [or 16.7%] had died by the end of October 2011. An additional 32 died in the tsunami. By comparison, only 109 died in the same period in 2010. [...]

Exactly my thought. Exposure to low level radiation reduces immune system response. That's why many people globally who were born during the age of atmospheric testing have so many health problems.

I can't believe the levels that the deem save in the Fukushima Prefecture. 20mSv!! Areas around Chernobyl that were deemed mandatory evacuation are considered Safe for Habitation. I say move the Corporate managers from Tepco into these Safe for Habitation areas.

Here is a pronuke response on similar topic:
**I think the Japan evacuation limit of 20 mSv is nonsense. I don’t suggest evacuating an area even over 500 mSv/year, but from my reading of chronic exposure this is definately a level that can be no longer beneficial, especially for children (results for adults are fairly ambiguous). I definately won’t agree that having a sizeable area of over 500 mSv/year is a sign that the containment worked, rather the opposite.
I wouldn’t mind living in 3 or 30 mSv/year field. But 500 mSv/year I’d have to think about.**

Sad but true. I think it would be appropriate for some of the older generations who advocated for and profited from the use of nuclear power to step up and take their medicine. I am afraid one day I will face a choice like that but as it is today I would step up and give my life to protect my children, where are our parents, where are our grandparents.
Forget not in my backyard, I say not on my planet.

^^ my gf gave me it,,, 66% of thyroid lumps,, in OSAKA!! so far from Fukushima,,, And Okinawa reported it too somewhere,,, terrible news, all of Japan is well,,, gone,, my gf and me are seeking and searching for "radiation off" medicene now… this is desperate,, she already had pneumonia twice among other things….
