Title: EDITORIAL: Clearer government role needed for Fukushima cleanup
Source: Asahi Shimbun
Date: August 17, 2013

The crisis at [Tepco]‘s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is far from over.

The government has yet to call off the state of nuclear emergency it declared on March 11, 2011 [...]

This fact clearly shows that the nuclear disaster is still going on. [...]

The government’s move to step in and get involved in the efforts to sort out the problem [of radioactive leaks into ocean] came far too late. [...]

Given the urgency of the situation, the [industry] ministry’s commitment to tackling the situation is far too weak. [...]

Posted May 30, 2012 to “Knocking on Heaven's Shore: Bluefin Tuna Carrying Safe Fukushima Nuclear Radiation” by Carl Safina at the Huffington Post and ENENEWS
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carl-safina/fukushima-radiation-tuna_b_1557466.html

When the SFP at #4 reactor is breached and the resulting radioactive firestorm ensues, half of the Island of Honshu will have to be evacuated. Thousands in Japan will die within days, weeks and months from radiation poisoning. It will be a global catastrophe of epic proportions, contaminating the northern hemisphere, resulting in tens of millions of deaths. No country will be spared. Following the jet stream blowing east, the US and Canadian coasts will be the most hard hit/contaminated. The entire US and Canada will not be spared.

There are reports that the Japanese government has been in talks with China and Russia discussing the potential of evacuating 40 million people, and the associated logistics. Some predict this event will collapse the economy of Japan, and destroy the fortunes of many of its trading partners.

Your chance of being irradiated from Fukushima (past, present, future) is extremely high/likely. And, as each day ticks bye, we get closer to a radiological firestorm that will make Chernobyl look pale as to what is unfolding. Those of us, who will not be exposed to radionuclides, will be the exceptions.

Cisco, than you SO MUCH for doing this! (And love that it's at the top.) A certain percentage of even the people posting here mean well and want info but are still in partial denial. Honestly, it is a process for ANYONE to overcome denial in a crisis this grave — a true ELE.

What I've been thinking more recently, is that people should research and share ways to overcome radiation. LIke pouring a pound each of baking soda and sea salt in a hot bath is supposed to help. Taking lots of MINERALS helps, because radionuclides each replace specific minerals in the body but they cannot do it when the body is already fortified. Like taking natural iodine to ward off radioactive iodine. Calcium (though not dairy, please!) to ward off strontium. Potassium to ward off cesium. Magnesium to ward off uranium. Even iron to ward off plutonium. (Just ORGANIC iron — yellow dock root is the best.)

I hope others will be sharing about how to protect our HEALTH.

All that stuff is great, and I hope it works for the people that want it to…but there are some factors that need to be considered. First: Baking soda is something that will have to be continuously purchased, and is therefor not a viable solution (because it's not sustainable, and/or not everyone will have access to it). Also, you mention sea salt in that bath…that sea salt comes from….the SEA! We all know how horribly contamindated the oceans are, and those levels will only increase. People will think they are ridding their bodies of contamination, but instead they are possibly soaking their bodies in concentrated radiation from the sea salt, right? If I'm wrong there, let me know.

Second: Where are all those minerals coming from that you mention? The only sustainable mineral packages I know of that everyone can have access to are the ones that are produced by biological processes (consuming plant/animal matter). Any manufactured concentrates are unsustainable. Further, if those minerals you discuss are coming from plant/animal matter, where is it grown/raised, and by whom? You mention yellow dock root…that grows in the ground…ground that is contaminated with more than just radionuclides…

The only way to make progress is to stop the nuclides from being produced and released. Otherwise, how do you know that your mineral suppliments and vitamins aren't just concentrated nuclide packages? People take seaweed capsules…fish oil…

You will inhale it, eat it, or have skin exposure. And, it will metastasize into a cancer sometime in your life. Your DNA will be corrupted; and, if you procreate, you will pass your damaged genes on to the next generation, and each generation thereafter.

Radiation levels in the western US and Canada will be extreme as to cause some radiation poisoning in small segments of the population resulting in premature biological extinctions. Food stuffs grown and produced in California and other western states will be too contaminated to pick, and/or consume. All products from Japan should be suspect as to their potential, to be radioactive.

Adding more radiation to the atmosphere and the ocean, Japan is incinerating millions of tons of radioactive debris, and then dumping the ash in Tokyo Bay. Incineration doesn’t remove radiation; this process off gases radionuclides into the air, and the other radionuclides are concentrated in the ash. Incineration of radioactive debris only serves as a volume reducer. There is no method to remediate radioactive isotopes except to remove them from humankind.

TEPCO has admitted to dumping 1000 tons a day of radioactive water…(240,000/GPD or close to 1,000,000 million gallons every 4 days). Historically, TEPCO has fudged and misrepresented its actual discharge rates.

Many experts believe these numbers have been significantly understated. The radioactive sea plume has reached Hawaii and should reach the US in less than 6 months. Sea water evaporates, clouds form that produce rain, adding another level of contamination to the atmosphere and land.

Additionally, some approximately 50,000,000 tons of construction and industrial debris is headed our way, expected to hit the US and Canadian coasts in the next 6 months. Some of it is dangerously radioactive.

This will be the beginning of the end for millions of people, and a mass corruption of the *gene pool for man and all other living creatures and plants. This will be the end of nuclear power; but, it will be the end of many of us, too.

It’s not a question of if; it’s just a matter of when.

If you think those who created this nuclear power electricity scheme will be able to contain Fukushima; think again. The same folks who got us into this mess, are the ones charged with fixing it…WTF? Remember the Deepwater Horizon and how the offender BP was left to be the fixer…insanity.

As Rachel Maddow characterized the possibility of a meltdown at SPF #4, we’d have to invent a way to control/fix it. There is no known solution… http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/46981461#46981461

Mr. Cisco, you are on it … only suggestion is we may need to "titrate our truth telling" …

The facts of the matter are certainly overwhelming to many, including our spouses and children. As we work on our messaging, we need to add a little humor or something with our facts, or our audience turns off, as with hard core porn, or overly graphic violence … not sayin' anything you share is not spot on.

I say it thus, "Be careful what you ask for, for sometimes the truth comes out by the boat load, and it may swamp your little dingy of reality."

peace to all the 'newsers. I know this site is a safe haven for tormented truth tellers.

cow terrorism, an ocean trench triage radwaste dumping scheme … all of our ideas and efforts are more than we get from the evil bankster/fraudster types who created this mess, and now sit back and count their millions …

despicable … a failure of language to adequately describe the insanity …

        Cisco,

It is refreshing to read someone articulate the whole situation without any fluff or spin to muddy the waters. I many times feel like the guy from that movie years ago screaming "There's a man on the wing of the airplane" and people just dismiss Fukushima with a "don't be a drama queen" attitude.

I have long ago taken an acceptance attitude towards Fukushima as it was over the top since day 1. I try not to waste my energy on terminal deniers and am trying to use what time we have left constructively in whatever ways I can.

Thank you for your frank assessment.

If you cannot 'identify' the problem, how can you take steps to 'secure safety'? They've had 2 1/2 years to identify the problem(s). Multiple problems that is.

We dont have to worry about dying from cancer.
When the radiation reaches the plankton blooms off the Soutj American coast, killing the creator of 70% of the oxygen we all need to live, well, we will quit living. But no worries, cause as the O2 levels drop, we will all become to dumb to care..

Is there anything we should be doing to our housing that might slow the process? Any lifestyle changes that might slow the progress? Ok, I get that the end is virtually imminent but I guess the desire to stay alive is strong. I would like to try to do something even though I know in the end something is coming. My friend told me staying inside was useless because radiation does not know walls and certainly no ones home is a vacuum.

Japan is in big trouble and TEPCO is doing little but who can, water under the plants stops them from doing what Chur…did by digging under the plant stopping progression of melted fuel. This melt down is beyond any thing that has ever happened. The only thing they can do is watch and react to changes, hoping that they will see a change that will allow them to get a handle on the situation. What they should be doing is decontaminating the surroundings, I have not seen posts on the progress of decontaminating. Have they given up or only cleaning hard surfaces that have walking traffic. Do they have to keep redoing these areas because of radiation falling continuously, if so I see why they want to concrete it over but I do not see how it will help. How will they cool the fuel unless they leave openings to force water into the fuel, the cap will cause the fuel to get hotter so will have to use more water.

    that's about right.

Russia tried the decontamination work, they really did. They gave up on it because it doesn't work. It is a fools errand. Yes it works a little, on smooth concrete, where they put the rad monitors, but forget about the soil, the forests, the mountains, the lakes the oceans … only thing to do is try and contain the releases, which they can't do either … sooooo, how does this make you feel?

    It's kinda a total bummer.
