NISA calls for reviews of fault lines near Fukui nuclear reactors
AJW by The Asahi Shimbun
July 04, 2012

[...]

The Shiraki-Nyu fault, which is recognized as active, runs [...] 500 meters west of the Monju reactor [...] while nine others run under the Monju reactor.

KEPCO and the JAEA have maintained there are no traces of recent activity along those fault lines. They have also denied the possibility that the faults could move if sliding occurs along the Shiraki-Nyu fault.

[...]

June 22, 2012 report in the Asahi Shinbun (Fukui local version) translated by EXSKF:

Monju to be restored next month [July]

Fast breeder “Monju” (in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture), whose operation has been suspended due to numerous problems, is expected to be fully restored in mid July. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) showed the restoration work to the press on June 21

[...]

Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES) [...] will confirm the operation of the electro-magnetic brakes attached to the control rods, and the test operation is set to resume in mid July.

Monju costs far surpass usual nukes
Kyodo
July 4, 2012

[...]

Monju uses a uranium and plutonium mix known as MOX as fuel.

[...]

But
sodium, used as a coolant, leaked during its test run in December 1995.
Around 640 kg of leaked sodium reacted with air and sparked a fire,
forcing a prolonged suspension.

The operator was also caught
trying to cover the incident up. Workers made a false report about and
truncated video footage of the accident.

Haven't they learned yet how corrosive salt water is?

    Fermi I Breeder Reactor
“The Fermi I reactor was a breeder located at Lagoona Beach, 30 miles from Detroit. On October 5, 1966, high temperatures were measured (700 compared to normal 580¡F) and radiation alarms sounded involving two fuel rod subassemblies. The reactor scrammed and there was indication of fuel melting. After a month of sweating, they tested out enough subassemblies to limit the damage to 6 subassemblies. By January 67 they had learned that 4 subassemblies were damaged with two stuck together, but it took until May to remove the assemblies.
“When they had checked the sodium flow earlier, they had detected a clapping noise. In August 67 they were able to lower a periscope device into the meltdown pan and found that a piece of zirconium cladding had come loose and was blocking the sodium coolant nozzles. The zirconium cladding was part of the lining of the meltdown cone designed to direct the distribution of fuel material should a meltdown of the fuel occur. Such structures are necessary in a breeder reactor because of the possibliity of molten fuel reassembling itself in a critical configuration. This is not a possibility in an ordinary light water reactor because of the low level of enrichment of the uranium, but a fast breeder reactor is operated with a much higher level of enrichment.

Anne, thanks again for all your research! I can't decide which explanation is more likely – "reptilian take over of the planet" to devolution of human intelligence through the overuse of farming additives. Given that reptile invaders probably can't survive in high radiation any better than human zombied primates, i'd have to go with the devolution hypothesis.

with all due respect anne, why do you flood with articles like this? It's almost as if you some ulterior motive.. I could be wrong, but it's just a sense I get.

Oh, richard, she does, she does. Very sinister, indeed – public access to all the facts she can dedicate her time to finding and kindly bringing to us. Didn't you know that Anne's a teacher? So, why is it odd that a blog site designed to provide open access to hard to find, certified, corroborative information should have people like Anne on it fulfilling its mission? What's odd to me is why you find that odd.

When the "allegedly" smartest and most respected people, aka, nuclear scientists and the governments that love them seem out of control and treacherous and allowed to menace an entire planet for reasons few of us here will ever fathom, the world begins to look a little mad. So, we come here to be with like minded souls. This is not just where we share our concerns and gain support. This is one of our few sanctuaries from the greed and unreasoning that is engulfing the world. And, sometimes nuclear shills come here to play mind games or try and take a little steam out of the building momentum of antinuclear sentiment. They pretend to be other than who and what they are so that we trust them. It becomes almost instinctual to begin to see Trojan Horses and logic traps laid for the unwary everywhere. There is a thinly veiled disgust against antinuclear advocates. We are raining on the parade of wealth. And, so every attempt will be made to marginalize the message or the messenger. We have to be on our guard. The double edged sword of becoming aware is that in the same moment we are also becoming disillusioned. "Rollercoaster" says it all.

    Anne,
thanks for your work. bringing it home, in no uncertain terms. And nine fault lines to boot. Can you call people scientists if they're crazy? Science is to analyze facts; if you disregard all the facts…?

What going on in side their heads, how can they straight faced say don't worry it's safe, how do they look at their family and promote this, do they not believe in Murphy,s law, money has corrupted their souls and minds, any logical person would say no, once bitten twice dead.

Anne is functioning as a good researcher and teacher should: by presenting hard evidence and showing exactly why it matters. Her postings are without fail full of germane information and with supporting citations. Many of the posters here post only "from the gut" — full of emotion and thoughts, but light on substantial information and citations. Posters like anne bring on the hard facts, with citations to give them force of authority, and we need that if we're ever to convince individuals and nations that nuclear technology is more dangerous than it's worth, and that in fact it's ultimately dangerous to every living thing on earth. Part of what makes ENENews such an invaluable site is the level of information to be gleaned from posts as well as from the articles themselves — anne is one of the very best at disseminating the information that will educate and inform people who come here in search of knowledge. As a fellow teacher, I'd say that her students have been fortunate. As a fellow ENENewser, I must say that in addition to the articles, it's the posters like anne who not only keep me reading this site several times each day but who also inspired me to sign up and comment instead of simply lurking. I value anne's contributions quite highly.

Now to the real topic of this thread — weeman said it best: "Insanity runs in the nuclear family." Yes,insanity and psychopathy and arrogance and entitlement and self-aggrandizement and lust for power over…

After reading this article I have lost all respect for the Japanese system. It is obvious that the Fukushima nuclear disaster has done nothing to change the way the Japanese government and TEPCO (industry) think and act. One clear conclusion I can come to is that they are really not capable of understanding the incalculable amount of physical and mental anguish that their actions have caused. For me, this is deeply saddening.

"One clear conclusion I can come to is that they are really not capable of understanding the incalculable amount of physical and mental anguish that their actions have caused."

unsub- I believe that they DO understand the consequences of their actions, that is to say that they're more than capable of following something through to its logical conclusion. When I think about it, most of these people graduated from institutions of higher learning, thus inculcating them into a materialistic mentality. The reason they do what they do is because THEY DON'T CARE. And the reason why they don't care is because they've become subhuman sociopaths who're obsessed with profit at all costs. Nearly every industry and institution on this planet operates on this one paradigm: Profit over life. Simple as that.

No it doesn't make any sense in the long term to any thinking individual, but I see these people as only being mindful of their short-term gains and profits. Also, Agenda 21….

"KEPCO and the JAEA have maintained there are no traces of recent activity…They have also denied the possibility that the faults could move…"

"Maintained", what does that even mean? How can they deny that there is a possibility of something that is so obviously possible?

I am so tired of seeing these little old men with their delusions of intellectual superiority and their pristine starched work uniforms, sitting there spewing conjecture as if it is fact. I really think they believe that the mere fact that they are the ones speaking is enough to ensure the listener of the statement's truth. Could they really be this arrogant? Where are the journalist who should be calling these "wise" men on this?

"Accidental drilling of a cooling pipe" at Tsuruga nuke plant!

    July 9, 2012 MSN JP: http://sankei.jp.msn.com/affairs/news/120709/crm12070919040022-n1.htm

Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry say that a reactor cooling pipe was accidentally pierced while driling to survey the (earthquake) faults. It happened around 2PM on July 6, 2012.

At the time the reactor was under inspection and no leak resulted, they say. If it were in operation, this pipe would have been circulating sea water for cooling.

Could this be the Monju reactor with MOX fuel? How careless and incompetent can they continue to be?
