Title: Second fuel assembly pulled from reactor 4′s pool
Source: Kyodo
Date: Friday, July 20, 2012
[...]
Tepco is examining the extent of damage to the stored fuel before starting the full removal of fuel assemblies, which is to begin in December 2013.
[...]
As was the case with the fuel assembly taken out Wednesday, Tepco used a crane to remove the second one from the pool on the fifth floor of the reactor building, cleaned it with pure water and placed it in a special container, the sources said.
The fuel assemblies in the special containers will be transferred to a so-called shared pool
[...]
Tepco has refused to disclose any information on the operation, citing nuclear security concerns.
The sources said the utility did not find any major abnormality in the first assembly in terms of radiation levels or its external appearance.

No “major” abnormality in radiation levels? Removed fuel assemblies 100 times more radioactive than normal -- Tepco worker thinks it's from before 3/11

The fuel will be stored in a plastic pool blown up by kids on a field trip to praise the efforts of TEPKILL.

No major abnormality in the FIRST fuel assembly…

Gotta love living on the edge of extinction, for the next 17 months!

could you experts tell me how dangerous/poisonus for human body is touching that fuel assembly by hands?

Depends on the gear you wear..but I would not trust TEPCO to provide it–at one time there were said to be 100 special radiation protection suits sent to the disaster from the USA. They were able to protect significantly. HOWEVER..it looked like regular white material jump suits. White looks professional and clean of course, but color of clothes probably has nothing to do with radiation protection.

Um, someone, PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't having 100x times the normal level of radiation for new fuel a legitimate abnormality?

That is exactly what I was thinking when I read this. Things that make ya go hmmm.

Its interesting watching this work, and reviewing in-pond videos of the tops of the fuel racks.
Most commentators say that there was a fire in SFP#4 in the early days. If that was the case the water level in the SFP must have been below the top of the racks.
As I understand the reactions in a fuel rod fire, once it is burning the Zirc/Uranium reaction cannot be put out with water as the reaction uses cracked water (hydrogen and oxygen) to add to the fire. So surely if the SPF had started to be on fire, then it would have burned right down and the evacuation of Japan would have happened a year ago.
But there is no evidence of fire damage to the top of the fuel racks, and the fact that they have managed to slide a couple of assemblies out without too much difficulty is very encouraging.
Obviously the unused assemblies can be briefly exposed to air, but I guess their next challenge is to get used 'hot' assemblies out as they can possibly ignite if not submerged in water. I imagine some sort of diving bell with an internal lifting device will be needed, then then lift the bell out with the assembly in it to transfer to the nearby storage pool. Good luck!

Don't expect TEPCO to reveal all the pertinent details concerning these (2) fuel assemblies including everything else that ever happen past, present and future with anything involving the company.
You'll gather just enough facts to arrive at conjecture, a best guess scenario.
TEPCO handpicked these (2) fuel assemblies by using an underwater with a radiation sensor attached to pre-inspect the unused fuel assemblies and selected these two for removal.
Pull them out of pool bare, find high surface radiation readings, wash them, inspect them, then put them in a special container, then store them in water somewhere and then announce the results are top secret. What is wrong with this picture?
Be interesting what Arnie G. has to say about it. He more than anyone is an expert when dealing with Mark 1 fuel assemblies.

sorry about that…an underwater camera…

TEPCO lies through their teeth continuously. You can't expect anything they say is the truth….but they try to skirt around their lies, so by listening to what they are not saying, some of the truth may be divulged.
I have compiled quite a bit of nuclear information at this site—
One of my favorites is using EPA air testing data to prove that 10's of tons of uranium / plutonium were aerosolized from Fukushima and much made to Hawaii, Guam, Western US and beyond. And indeed many of us took a dose.
Proof is here, at the top tabs are various information resources.

So an increase of 100X's radioactive is NOT abormal… ?

Lets face the Idea that they have pulled out the fresh fuel from pool 4 so that they can sell it to the NPP's that are restarting.

No “major abnormality” hey. And I suppose no "immediate danger" to anyone's health either?

Shameless manipulators. We are all being showered with fallout and these lairs continue to declare that it's all under control.

Whats with this nuclear security jazz? Gives the impression that they have military secrets they don't want the enemy to find out. Who's the enemy? I'm guessing all those innocent citizens getting invisible doses of radiation. TEPCO and others (ie G.E etc.) want the security of making money out of nuclear poisons.
