[... Physicist and head of the Society for Radiation Protection Sebastian] Pflugbeil thinks the Japanese government’s strategies to get over the catastrophe by appealing to peoples’ patriotism is absurd. On his last trip to the East Asian country, he took a picture at a beauty contest – with support from the minister for agriculture, a contest was held to find the prettiest student who ate only food from the Fukushima region. And remember, Tokyo is bidding for the 2020 Olympics!!!

I don't agree with the criticism, but I think they are reacting to your shortening of Japanese to jap. "jap.nuke.guv" I think that unless we've see a pattern of you using bigoted language, a person should be given the benefit of the doubt. It appears to be an abbreviation to me.

On the other hand I will state clearly that I find the Japanese people's behavior in this matter to be reprehensible. Unfortunaly I also find the California's/West Coasts/USA People'e (my own geographic/cultural milieu) behavior to also be reprehensible. Denial on the scale we are seeing is just…ugly.

                thanks mark for the input.

okay, i understand the shortform may be taken as being a bit snappy. i do abbreviate for the convenience and the entity as i see it, but i don't mean offence to the japanese people as the general population.

i'm uptight at japanese officials and tepco management and the usa for it's role in all this.

i use terms like usa.corp.guv and i feel that it's a good contemporary statement. i didn't start it, i picked it up elsewhere.

in australia, we are called ozzies. we don't take offence to that .. i even get called 'skippy' as in 'Skippy the Bush Kangaroo'

some naming/generalising is needed in life. i can understand that with a world of people out there, some misunderstandings are bound to occur.

really, i mean no harm to the innocent. but i am very upset and frustrated by where this event is taking us.. so i do get strong worded, as others do.

i do also manage to keep a lid on my stronger/private thoughts.. mostly :)

anyway .. rant over… maybe it helped .. dunno.

The politics of this site's participants range from far-left to far-right and we all make a point of doing our best to protect this site and each other. We have one objective that binds all: to remove the nightmare of nuclear power from our precious earth. So please forgive if we're a tad PC, as it's really about keeping this ship on an even keel…

Unfortunately, GE, i.e., the US foisted these reactors off on Japan. Please blame the US and the rest of the world for the nuclear industry. We are dying from the nuclear industry in the US quite apart from the Japanese counterparts in our own country and in countries around the world.

Globalization is definitely crippling us and killing us from the financial banking and industry and military giants to the lead in the children's toys and radioactive nuclides in the baby formula (in every country) to the defective pipes and defective reactors caps in US nuclear reactors.

This is old news and a bit out of context. I am not saying it is right but this is what the Japanese have been doing since the onset. The Japanese are not taught to think for themselves. Thus, the government can lure college girls into promoting food from Tohoku (not just from Fukushima). I would like to see reports highlighting more positive things as well. Children from Kansai are now choosing not to go to college in Tokyo. Enrollment is down and they are staying put.

I don't think it is that they don't value life. I think the culture places a higher value on the outcome of the group more than the outcome of the individual.

Even understanding that it is still hard to understand when those of us in the USA tend to be more focused on the individual believing that it is basic human nature to be centered on one's own self advancement and survival. It makes the Japanese culture's "group think" or "hive" mentality seem to go against human nature to survive.

That is such a racist comment; what BS. You don't know "they" anything…and what about US use of depleted uranium weapons exposing our own soldiers and higher populations and unborn generations in S Iraq to 20 yrs of lung, brain, and kidney ionization (U238/235/poss Pu mix)? that is supposed to show how much "they" – those people in the West – value life? get real. dont judge a whole people please….humans in every culture have a hard time responding appropriately to a danger they cannot see, hear, smell or touch. the japanese are not alone in this, you know. people in lots of cultures deny its reality. you know? how about the near 80% cancer rates, as they have in Hanford, WA or Kazakstan, former Soviet test site? If people weren't in denial almost universally I would have thought the whole population of Richland, WA and their descendants would have risen up in massive rebellion forty years ago…..but no, they are grateful for the jobs. so please stop knocking the japanese here, they have enough on their plate without blatant racism.

My brother-in-law was a funeral director. Someone would ask him, how do I tie a tie? He always offered to do it for them, they just needed to lie down first. Then standing by the casket, he would listen and person after person would comment "Oh, I just can't believe how good She/he looks." Sounds like the beauty contest to me. I just can't believe how Good Japan looks — but the elements of death and destruction are working silently for today, tomorrow and generations beyond our ability to imagine. Stop the madness, decommission, isolate, contain, and guard these seeds of our future's death.

Don't worry. The food from Fuku that is so bad even the Japanese government won't let it pass (so imagine how bad that is), is sold overseas and rebranded as coming from another country.

Thanks to our government we don't test any food for radioactivity, so it all will get in anyway.

Somebody here didn't like my Nanjing reference. Really?

    R. J. Rummel, a professor of political science at the University of Hawaii, states that between 1937 and 1945, the Japanese military murdered from nearly 3,000,000 to over 10,000,000 people, most likely 6,000,000 Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos, and Indochinese, among others, including Western prisoners of war. "This democide was due to a morally bankrupt political and military strategy, military expediency and custom, and national culture."

Historian Mitsuyoshi Himeta reports that a "Three Alls Policy" (Sankō Sakusen) was implemented in China from 1942 to 1945 and was in itself responsible for the deaths of "more than 2.7 million" Chinese civilians. This scorched earth strategy, sanctioned by Hirohito himself, directed Japanese forces to "Kill All, Burn All, and Loot All."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimes#Mass_killings

Now the Japanese government is going to kill 127,000,000 of their own. It's called 'Democide' – the worst kind of -cide.

The governments of the world are committing 'Democide' against us.

And do you think the Japanese government are the only ones capable of this sick shit?

General Shiro Ishii, Head of Unit 731, Biological Weapons Research On The Chinese

"A secret deal was struck with the Allies, and when the Tokyo war trials opened in 1946, neither Ishii nor any of his scientists were among the accused. However, the Soviet Union later prosecuted twelve top military leaders and scientists from Unit 731 and its affiliated biological-war prisons during the Khabarovsk War Crime Trials.

*** Many of the staff at Unit 731 went on to prominent careers in Japan’s medical establishment. Dr Shiro Ishii moved to Maryland in the U.S. to continue work on bio-weapons." ***

Yes, and excuse me, but which country is to this day the only country to have launched two nuclear weapons against another state in a war?
Which country fire-bombed Dresden, (very like a nuclear explosion), which countries committed genocide against millions, which countries are free of war crimes? None. Not Japan, not China, not the US, not the UK, not Italy or Germany or the Soviet Union or Serbia or Cambodia or Rwanda….so what is the 'blame the victim' thing that sometimes happens here? The Japanese people right now – no matter what any of us were fifty years ago! – the people right now are suffering a health disaster of untold dimensions, and suffering a government's and major corp's blatant propaganda, but its their fault because they what? live there? we are all in the same boat my fiends and the sooner we know this deeply the better off we will all be with whatever kinds of health/life/average age of death changes that will be happening in all human communities globally over the next sixty years and beyond? is anyone delusional enough to believe that if sfp4 and common sfp went down, that global fallout and consequent health effects would happen fast? sooner for some, slower for others, much slower….much slower for most of us, unfortunately.
