Fukushima Plant May Have Emitted Double Radiation Than Estimated, Bloomberg, October 26, 2011:

“The plant north of Tokyo may have started releasing radiation before the tsunami arrived about 45 minutes after the magnitude-9 quake struck, according to the study, contradicting official assertions.”

“‘There is strong evidence that the start of the release occurred early, already during or shortly after the automatic emergency shutdown of the reactors triggered by the big earthquake,’ the authors [of an international study on the radiation release from Fukushima] said. This ‘may indicate some structural damage to the reactor units during the earthquake.’”

Fallout forensics hike radiation toll, Nature.com, October 25, 2011:

“The latest analysis also presents evidence that xenon-133 began to vent from Fukushima Daiichi immediately after the quake, and before the tsunami swamped the area. This implies that even without the devastating flood, the earthquake alone was sufficient to cause damage at the plant.”

But but but the nuclear people told us that it required both an earthquake and a massive tsunami and radium bottles and all of Queen Beruthiel’s cats and this could never ever possibly happen again and really didn’t happen this time!!!!!

We very nearly had the exact same thing two months ago at N. Anna nuke plant.

Fuku was a much stronger earthquake, so the damage to the core was much more extensive. it wouldn’t surprise me to hear someday that the damage to the core was so extensive that the control rods couldn’t be inserted.

We only know what they decide to tell us….sounds Ayn Rand-ish but that’s where we are at. I can only imagine that the control will intensify. If fuku didn’t blow up and everyone see the damange I’m sure that no meltdown would have ever been reported. Now let’s consider what happened at N. Anna…what do we really know/ oh we are back at the begining again/…we only know what they have decided to tell us!

Our only defense against this attitude…The movement…..
People with Geiger counters…I wonder how well the iphone app with attachment works…anyone know?

I downloaded it, but have nothing to calibrate it with. I fudged the numbers I entered to get it to 40 CPM’s. It appears to work, but have no calibration or way to make sure it is accurate. Android phone, App called Radioactivity Counter.

          • I will have an iphone app soon on the RadiactivtyCounter version, we calibrate it for all models (iphone 4, 4S, 3GS, ipad 2, ipod 4, but still even the same model can have certain variations due to different sensor manufacturers, currently it looks as though the same model has similar values.
For the android we did calibration for several dozen models and version, but there is also some variation on the same model. These apps in general are usfuly for a rough estimation if there is a critical radiation on a product or area, which can then checked more in depth.

It sounds very convenient, but personally I would be very wary of an Iphone app like this. Who wrote it?

The problem with an Iphone is that it ties your personal information to your location, to anything you do on it, and data can be streamed back centrally without your knowledge or approval.

They would love to have us all running around posting results with our cell phone apps. Buy a real detector!

          • You are right – real detectors are more sensitive, but also expensive. If you want a real coverage and a dense network, I only see mobile phones as a solution. But of course some research must be done and cooperation with the manufacturers is necessary, as the cameras are not designed to be geiger counters and have some tolerance in the production process. On the other side the mobile phone camera detector can detect much much higher radiation than the usual geiger counters as well as neutrons (even myons with our latest tests), which of course is a different story.

@ many moons, Good evening. I respectfully disagree regarding “if fuku didn’t blow up” After a natural disaster (not the meltdown) like the one that happened I don’t believe that people somewhere wouldn’t know about it. If they tried to keep it a secret(as the Soviet Union did in 1986) it wouldn’t be for long. Too many people were focused on Japan in the aftermath to not know something was awry. My 2 cents. Regards, IK

I think that Outing the Russians about Chernobyl was a pollitical act. The US enjoyed pointint the finger at the Soviet goverment adding, look how sneaky they are. In this case, obviously the USA has aided Japan in covering up the extent of this accident. In fact one of the first moves Canada and the USA was to turn off their radiation detectors that would have meassured the extenet of damage. I doubt that in ’86 the US would have done that for the Russians. No they would have paraded around the idea that this wasn’t an accident and perhaps this was instead an attack.

We heard this a few weeks back. Anyone else remember?
