India is producing power from solar cells more cheaply than by burning diesel for the first time, spurring billionaire Sunil Mittal and Coca-Cola Co. (KO)’s mango supplier to jettison the fuel in favor of photovoltaic panels. [...] 

Winners of India’s national solar-capacity auction in December agreed to supply power for an average rate of 8.78 rupees (17 cents) a kilowatt-hour by early 2013.

In comparison, electricity from burning state-subsidized diesel costs generators about 17 rupees, according to Charanjit Singh, an energy analyst at HSBC Holdings Plc. The cheapest power comes from burning coal, which is about 4 rupees a kilowatt-hour, though users must be connected to the grid.

    Great story, and nice not to be talking directly about nukes for a change.

    I hope this kind of thing isn’t coming too late for humanity.

      • May 50M or 100M, but the other option related to giving up the fight to end nukes, results in extinction of the species and everything you know, perhaps even within our lifetime.

        The collateral damage will be huge, it will take 40 to 60 years to package up all nuke nicely in dry cask deep in some mountain. In that time frame, everything is at risk.

        There will be one or two more “big ones” (only, if we are lucky) before this is all done.

        We need to shut them all DOWN, starting now.

          @stock: your timeline’s accurate. It will take at least fifty years to get the worst of it ‘guaranteed’. Then another two-hundred or so to remove the low-level waste. I’m working on something that promises to reduce ground water contamination. It’s much worse than most are even slightly aware (Hanford water pollution revelations).

          What took less than a hundred years (inception timeline) may take five-hundred or more to get under control.

          As was eventually discovered with the proposed entombment of highly radioactive materials, long-term geological issues come into play. What we feel safe in doing today can come back to haunt us in ten-thousand years. So, I’ve been wondering if there’s a safe way to move nuclear contaminants off-world, for disposal into the sun.

          If mag-rails could be built on geologically stable regions, the waste could be encased (fuse-melted) within glass (frit) and ‘scooted’ out of the atmosphere within reusable – high-velocity – ‘gliders’ for handling up-above. The same system could be used for moving other required materials into orbit, as well. I’ve also seen proposed orbiting drag-cable lift-systems that might also work…

    The world has changed underneath their feet, they don’t want to have to learn a new livelihood even they are killing us slowly and sometimes more quickly.       The cost of solar will drop much more as it is widely utilized, and economies of scale take over. This is without any gov’t subsidies (like nuclear has).

      We could have gotten rid of carbon-emitting coal and radiation-emitting nuclear a long time ago, saved a lot of money, and had safety for life on the planet. Except for lying, greedy, murdering sociopaths.

    Solar and wind in conjunction with hydro(i.e., like Hoover Dam)is a great combination! When the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, then water can be released from the hydro-power dam to meet the electrical demand.

    Also, photovoltaics aren’t the only way to generate electricity from solar. Water can easily be boiled to generate steam using parbolic reflectors – a whole lot safer than using deadly nuclear fission. Seems like the manufacturers of nuclear power plants could (and should) adapt their business model to building solar power plants.
