Bulldozers begin working on new reactor at quake-hit Virginia nuke plant built on fault line

At North Anna nuclear plant, reassurances but no final data on quake impact, Washington Post by Brian Vastag, September 2, 2011:

[…] Dominion expects to build the new plant [a third reactor at North Anna]. On Friday, bulldozers moved dirt in early preparations for the reactor’s containment building, designed to be sturdier than the existing structures. Company official Page Kemp said Dominion could receive a license for the reactor in 2013 or 2014.

Earthquake Lessons: 10 U.S. Nuclear Plants Require Checks Now

Sykes stated the Virginia earthquake’s broad spread over 20 states illustrates the potential for massive damage. The at-risk nuclear plants all have a 2 percent or greater possibility of experiencing peak ground acceleration (PGA, measured in “g”s), exceeding .15g more than the next 50 many years, Climate Transform estimates.

The nuclear plants are engineered to shut off if the PGA hits .2 Recent earthquakes in New Zealand and Chile saw peak ground accelerations of 2.2 and .78, respectively.

Two of Dominion Resources’ reactors at its North Anna plants, only 15 miles from the quake’s epicenter in Mineral, shut off instantly.

Sykes, 74 years old, is Higgins Professor Emeritus of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he’s also an specialist in nuclear verification and served on the U.S. negotiating team for the threshold nuclear test ban treaty with the Soviet Union in 1974.

That is insane. They are not even stopping the works until they “found” the seismic data back?

Im not too sure i would guess its a decision thats been made for a few years now and they just havent had any common sence at all to bring it to the publics attention or to reconsider it on any level. Its a shame the people dont even have a say on such a important topic. hopefully things can change for the better before its too late.

  • Sickputer

It moved the 115 ton spent fuel casks 4 inches. I wouldn’t be surprised if the underground system of water pipes beneath the reactor buildings (many inaccessible for inspection) have cracks in them. These may not show up with their flow monitoring devices until the plant is brought back online and under full pressure. They better be ready to address those issues at that time.

  • Ken31ONCA

yeah this is all days after they were caught in a web of lies… who decides if these guys deserve the responsiblity of another reactor? safey of the people obviously dont matter when they wont open thier minds to the fact that radiation is not good for people, and none of these plants are as safe as they once thought. i hope they come to thier sences.

    • BreadAndButter BreadAndButter

Hi Ken31ONCA, I wonder on which basis the decision was made to build that 3rd reactor. I mean, in Japan almost 90% of nukes are down at the moment – and they’re obviously not as necessary as the companies said.
So: what is North Anna III energy for? Any info?

      • Ken31ONCA

not too sure but germany is phasing out thier plants and it will be done by 2020 i would bet fukushima will still be highly radioactive then at best and will never have people live in most areas on japan again. alex baldwin had some good ideas for solar power, we need more windmills and manitoba hydro reported 150 million profit on thier hydro dam, they should be able to phase out the dangerous plants and add lots of these other safer ways for power if there was common sence but the goverment is set to make too much money from nuclear the problem for alot of places is the plants are 40-50 plus years old so all the parts are also old too so these disasters are more likely to cause damage to important pipes etc, the people should take over for the goverment on nuclear safety cause all thier management and safety organizations are not cutting it.

Unit 3North Anna is currently going through the lengthy process of obtaining regulatory permission to build an additional unit at the site. Dominion Nuclear North Anna, LLC submitted its application for an Early Site Permit (ESP) for the North Anna site on September 25, 2003. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued the ESP on November 27, 2007.[4] On the same day, Dominion submitted an application for a Combined Construction and Operating License (COL) for a 1,520 MWe GE–Hitachi Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR), designated as North Anna Unit 3.[5]

In 2009, having failed to agree on terms for an engineering construction and procurement deal with GE-Hitachi to actually build the reactor, Dominion issued a new request for proposals from reactor vendors. In 2010, Dominion announced that it had selected a 1,700 MWe, US-specific version of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) Advanced Pressurized Water Reactor (APWR) for the potential Unit 3.[6]

Proposed plans to add a new reactor to the North Anna site have brought public protest. On August 7, 2008 six activists from the Peoples Alliance for Clean Energy were arrested at the North Anna Information Center for trespassing.[7]

On Oct 29, 2010 Dominion president Tom Farrell told investors that Dominion had decided to slow its development of the proposed third reactor and wait until the combined construction permit-operating license (COL) was approved by the NRC before deciding to complete the project. This approval is expected in early 2013.[8]

        • BreadAndButter BreadAndButter

…6 activists were arrested for trespassing at the information center… Wow.
If only 6 people are willing to protest against that beast being built, Dominion can rest assured.
Everybody else will come crying later.

  • americancommntr

The federal government should not be backing the liability risk of the existing plant, let alone a new one. It’s an example of pure, stupid, blind greed that a second plant is being built when the owners and regulators could not see to it that something so simple as a ground motion sensor could not be kept in regulation. They don’t give a damn. They don’t give a damn if their jackass little money maker renders the middle of the eastern ‘sea board’ uninhabitable. They are trying to see how close to the cliff they can get the tires of the vehicle, to make a buck. it’s a totally irresponsible industry. In the past such people did things like operate mines and leave wastelands. It’s the same today, except they leave facilities full of half-spent extremely radioactive fuel, and every 25 years or so, leave a huge geographic area unlivable for ever, and kill a million people with cancer.

I thought we came over that idea 50 years ago! I just wait for next idiot to tell us again that nuclear waste is good for preserving foods, lol

wow and what a design too imagine the mess if you ever colided with anything bigger then you are with any speed at all there would be nuclear shit all over. the car would have to be made of 100 % lead. or it would be like motorcyclists and leather jackets the drivers would have lead jackets to wear around and be cool

Thanks, B. The VA doctors have a pretty good handle on this. CML is one form of leukemia that can be treated. Not cured, but treated. I’m actually doin’ pretty good. The Portland, Oregon VA’s been great. They work with OHSU and they are equally fantastic. The two of them saved my life. Luckily, my doctor was on the team that developed the treatment.
My guess is strontium 90 is the cause. I’m 65 and lived thru all the atmospheric testing. I also wonder about the H bomb tests in the Pacific. I grew up in the Bay area and after seeing the amount of contamination getting here from Fuku, it makes me wonder how much all of us on the West coast (and everywhere else) got from Bikini.
My postman back in the ‘Bay was a member of the Nuclear Veterans, and is a survivor of the tests. He was at Operation Crossroads and scrubbed down “hot” ships.
I’m pretty well up on things nuclear. I’ve been studying it, informally, for quite a few years. My uncle worked at Lawrence Berkely and Lawerence Livermore.

They can build a new plant because there is no prove of any danger.. If the government would say “you may not build there because we say so” then the power plant people will go to court. Court says then that there is no reason to stop the building cause of lack of prove of why not and so they may continue the build.. that’s why they hide the evidence of possible dangers, No prove of danger no stopping them..

A headline such as this leads one to question either their sanity or their logic.

I’m really interested to find out how the beginning of construction will be received in DC by the politicians. Does anyone there actually have a brain? Someone said it’s only 40 miles from this plant to the nation’s capitol. I certainly wouldn’t allow it to be constructed.

Maybe they want to wait and see if there will be a larger earthquake before they act.
