[Translate] Advertising agency Asatsu-DK produced a report to METI of their internet spying program. The agency was contracted to snoop on public internet and social media traffic in order to prevent “harmful rumor”. The report heavily looked at what was posted on Twitter. It also looked at posts on public discussion boards and other forms of online media such as blogs and websites. The report documents the type of concerns and questions people discussed online then formed official answers that would be used to try to respond to concerns. In the type of data collecting done some was done by manually reading or looking for information while some was done automatically. Either method would have provided the opportunity to also collect the identity of people posting online about Fukushima

and the only “harmful rumor” is that created by those reckless criminals seeking to persuade the public in Japan and other countries that nothing harmful has resulted from the Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdowns. I haven't been on the forum much since I have been depressed at the news…sometimes it just doesn't seem like it is worth getting up in the morning. I am doing the opposite of what I am 'supposed' to do , as I've done for much of my life: I am moving house to a charming smaller city nearby with a great cultural life and am going to enjoy what time I have left to do so. I'll be visiting my family in the USA, too. There is nothing we can do and nowhere most of us can go to get away from this.

Hey milk and cheese, it's good to see you around! I'm getting depressed as well from time to time – then I know it's time for a "digital detox" time. I attended lots of "social economy" and "permaculture" and "how to start a community on renewables" courses over the past 6 months. Helped, actually. There's a LOT we can do!

I took those classes in Freiburg, Germany. It was officially called "energy management for communities", it were 15 weekends…every weekend we had a different lecturer – it was about law, green roofs, civil society dialogue, setting up co-ops, renewables – and we had a lecture from one of these guys here: http://www.permakultur.de/

I am on the east coast of Australia and have set up a community radiation monitoring station, where you can see present and past radiation levels charted on a daily basis. Our general background appears to have increase by 10 to 20% in the last few months compared to the last four years.
You will also find links to radiation cloud evens that have occurred in Australia, and New Zealand during January, February and March 2012 on this page.
I have no data for the west coast of Australia.

With all due respeect, I see a lot of pining over humanity and very little empathy for the flora and fauna and the future of it all.
I saw the word ecocide used. I think that's appropriate and personally I'd like to see laws based on the destruction of environment – which I'm sure there are, but after more then a year, not one official has been brought before a tribunal.

look, i hear you on the gravity of the matter.
and I know i've been sometimes overwhelmed by how serious this could (or has already) turn.

I have that problem sometimes, Whoopie. Probably just a freak timing issue on the server responding to simultaneous requests. I try to remember to compose posts in text editor (notepad) first and just paste the lot in when ready. But my posts are a bit longer than yours.

This is how governments have deceived the public about food safety radiation levels worldwide.

Lots will live, as lots have lived through all the radiation releases since the first atomic bomb test and the thousand explosions since, and lots will die, mostly after several years of exposure. Life adapts, changes, some of it thrives in this adversity. But, no question that there will be unnecessary suffering, lots of painful diseases, many mutations, and early deaths of all life forms, especially the longer lived since low dose radiation is a slow actor and damage accumulates over time. Areas close to Fukushima will accumulate more radiation and will become uninhabitable for eons by many life forms while looking perfectly livable. How will we warn people and animals away from those areas for thousands of years? The worst case scenarios are almost easier to contemplate because, then, well, there's really nothing to do. We will all suffer and die. Which, of course, we all do anyway, but usually from something else. But, i think that the more realistic outcome will be healthy people doing or not doing for the sick and injured from this disaster, as they choose. It will be a moral challenge. Will resources be given to help radiation poisoned people or will we let them suffer off somewhere hidden from public view? If Chernobyl is any indication, we have much work to do besides freaking out, though, clearly freaking out is an option. I recommend what you are already feeling – find the balance, create alternatives to help yourself and others, take calcium, hope.

Oh I agree with the concept and then some! Hawaii is just so much closer to the source. I`ll give them that there is some semblance of dilution occurring by the time it hits North America… and we have strong detection here… HI is smack dab in the thick of the issue, unfortunately.

There is NO dilution. That's a myth. It only spreads (which is not good) and as in this case, it is continuing to accumulate and spread simultaneously.
The radioactive 'particle' contaminates whatever it comes in contact with. If that's a 'fish' then where that fish dies and it's 'bones' come to rest that spot will be contaminated. Whatever comes in contact with the resting spot for the fish's bones will then be contaminated. It 'spreads' until the Hazardous to Life span of the particular radioactive element decays away.

The point you make is one that I have quit trying to get people to understand.
Radioactive elements don't decay back in to debris or dust or dirt like wood or concrete or decay in to benign compounds over 100s of years.
They just keep on spitting, so to speak.
The whole idea of Fuku emissions "diluting" in the ocean is no different than Russian Roulette with more empty chambers….it is still Russian Roulette!
What is looming in the near term is the idea that Joe Six Pack will have a very clear understanding of what "up the food chain" really means.
Yet by then it is too late.
Which it may already be, for all we know.

The SFP weighs 3.2 million pounds. The center of gravity is the somewhere close to the intersection of the symmetric planes. As long as the weight of the SFP passes through the center of gravity (CG), there is no overturning moment. The building is level. The #4 building has a list. Now suppose the downward weight of the SFP shifts away from the CG along the x axis say (1) foot. This creates an overturning moment of 3.2 million ft-lbs an enormous number. The overturning moment causes the structure to deflect. This shifts the weight away from the CG say to 1.5 feet. This increases the overturning moment which causes additional deflection. So it goes until the overturning moment becomes so great the SFP falls into the basement. It is important that TEPCO stop the list of the building. Shoring the SFP is IMHO not going to help because the jacks are on the foundation of the building. The CG will continue to shift along some axis causing the overturning moment to increase.

It takes less than a week for fallout from Fuku to arrive in Boston. When building 4 collaspses we won't know about it right away…it will be kept a secret for at least 4,5 6 days perhaps a month or more-live web cam will be previous or out of commision. By the time the Caldicott family should have evacuated it will be too late. Even if she has excellent connections giving her inside info, the info may not arrive before the radiation.

Well, IMHO something crazy is already going on. Today there were black clouds which just seemed to appear out of nowhere here. Not a thunderhead, just a big, low lying mass of black clouds. Out of the black clouds rain was streaming. All around was sunshine and a few white cumulous clouds. About 5PM it hailed here.
Can anyone explain why you'd have a big, black mass of clouds sitting all by itself on the middle of a sunny day, dumping rain over an area about 4 miles in diameter — NOT a thunderstorm?

the whole issue can really turn my stomach and heart at the same time.
what to do ? .. where's it going ? where will it end ?
is it really so out of control ? that's one thing that keeps hitting me.. is this all a really bad dream?
if it's all going this bad, and the vast mass of humanity doesn't care, then there simply is little chance .. and the bulk of humanity may not deserve .. to survive through it all.
We, as civilised humans and our technology, think we are above and independent of all other life forms. But should our technology fail and the population thins and the food suppyly diminishes – our house of cards may collapse beneath us. That could level the playing field.
Something really needs to shift in the overall consciousness of the population – but you know.. for me, i don't think it's going to happen.

I'm happy I don't have Children now more than ever.
Still I can't see why they can't support the structures even by pouring concrete under it to make a pillar of support.
Have they even started building a containment wall around the plant? I didn't hear anything about that either.
This needs a WOLRD WIDE EFFORT to fix, why the hell this isn't on the news regularly pisses me off as everyone is passive because of lack of facts about how devastating this could be worldwide

TEPCO is NOW Putting Life on Earth at RISK…
If the SFP (Spent Fuel Pool) in #4 collapses or fails to be kept cool FOR ANY REASON, in a very short time, all the fuel rods in it will destroy themselves by becoming a huge molten mass. This new radioactive mass will make the ENTIRE Fukushima complex (including reactors #5 and #6 (and their SFP's) into not only the Worlds biggest nuclear disaster but it will be so radioactive that the entire complex will be off limits to humans! This new uncontrollable molten mass will spew so much radioactivity (and keep doing so for the rest of our lives) that it will change life as we know it, because it will be spread Globally by the jet stream and or Ocean currents.
BTW: If you have not seen the 1959 movie "On the Beach" you should, it describes a very similar situation…
TEPCO MUST DO 3 THINGS ASAP TO PREVENT THIS:
1. TEPCO should be filling the entire #4 building with concrete ASAP in order to create a "Seismic Vessel" to completely encapsulate the SFP making it impossible for it to collapse, because the new "Seismic Vessel" would be one gigantic unit…
2. TEPCO should have no less than 4 backup generators and 4 pumps that EACH could provide ENOUGH emergency power and water should ANYTHING happen to prevent the normal pumps from functioning. Note this includes protecting all the fuel, storage tanks, piping and controls so that it would make these pumps and their generators completely BOMB PROOF so nothing…

3. TEPCO should build and then fill enough tanks to provide standby cooling freshwater for at least one week, so that no matter what happens, the #4 SFP will be kept cool without using seawater, (which could serve as another backup source of water) if the freshwater proved to not be enough for some unknown reason!

CaptD, and yet, they only shore up the trellis a little. I remember reading a post not long ago from a blogger here that suggested a large enough quake could dump the fuel rods ito the ocean. Made me wonder if that isn't a back up plan for TEPCO. Suicide workers bulldozing broken fuel rods into the Pacific ocean. It would actually make a sick sort of sense considering the alternative to leaving it in open air to fission and burn. What would you think it would take to get a petition sent to TEPCO via the media from engineers who support your ideas?

The food supplement whey, mentioned in the Stress Management book is a dairy product. It could possibly be a contaminated item now depending on where it is produced. You could substituted it with Chlorella, or Spirulina instead. Chlorella, and Spirulina appear to be excellent for helping to eliminate radioactive toxins from the body. If you have them in powder form mix to taste in fruit juice.
Also check out what country the Chlorella or Spirulina brand you intend to purchase comes from before purchasing. A lot of Chlorella, and Spirulina is being produced in Japan. Maybe safe coming from Southern Japan but who knows?
