Title: Interview with Helen Caldicott
Source: KPFA 94.1 FM
Date: January 15, 2013
At 11:30 in
Dr. Helen Caldicott: It’s terribly alarming what’s happening, and the ignorance of the population, and the lies that are being fed to the people.
I’ve just been in Japan for 10 days doing a speaking tour and I had audiences of 400 people and I’d give them the medical data and statistics about radiation and then it’d turn into a medical consultation. […]
Indeed many children were reported to have had nose bleeds which means their platelets are low which is a sign of radiation sickness.
And there have been a lot of viral illnesses as well. Of course your immune system is depleted by radiation.
There’s little being done to collect the medical data.

The people can't do anything. We are the victims. And doctors can't do anything. Radiation wrecks cells, and we'll suffer. The only remedy is to outlaw nuclear reactors.

Some notes from interview:
–> 1/2 Japan contaminated with Cesium-137 which causes brain, muscle, reproductive cancers
–> Strontium-90 in some Tokyo soil so radioactive that in America it would be sent to radioactive waste sites
–> Children living in areas with radiation levels at which Russians were evacuated
–> Japanese didn't announce there had been 3 meltdowns for 2 or 3 months
–> Japan knew where plume was going, but didn't tell people because they didn't want to cause panic
–> Japanese gov't encouraging radiative rice sold and fed to children
–> They're diluting radioactive rice with non-radioactive rice
–> Mushrooms so radioactive they're forbidden to be eaten
–> 100,000 children tested and 40% have thyroid lesions
–> 2 have thyroid cancer which is really quick because it took 5 years after Chernobyl for thyroid cancer to show up
–> Children extremely sensitive to radiation, 10X more than adults, girls 2X more than boys
–> Doctors in Japan are hungry for information
–> Japan trying to gloss it over and even open reactors again
–> Fukushima will never end
–> No idea how to clean it up becase there have never been 3 meltdowns in histroy
–> Continuation of radioactive elements being put in ocean
–> 53% of fish caught there are radioactive
–> Hillary Clinton signed a deal so food would be imported from Japan
–> Musn't eat food from Japan now because you don't know what's going to be radioactive
Report Comment
–> 200 radioactive elements were released during the meltdowns – some last seconds, some last millions of years
–> NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS NEVER END
Dr. Caldicott also discusses the Fukushima symposium.
The guest list is impressive.

My contempt just grows beyond the levels I didn't even know could go higher than it was the day I had my "rude awakening" and I'd be content if anyone's wish that the USA and myself included were simply vaporized as opposed to constantly going through the hideous suffering related to cancer treatments and another day of living with the knowledge that I had been proven so badly wrong with regard to thinking, believing, trusting that there would be a point BEFORE I ever had to learn the cold, hard lessons sitting in the chemo infusion center and surgical waiting rooms, calming my spouse to prevent her fear of the 1st round of 39 radiation therapy treatments because the anxiety levels hold a 75% chance of triggering more of the seizures she has that scare the cesium-infused crap outta me & I'll never "get used to"…instead the mistrust and contempt is turning to unabated, pure HATRED for SPECIFIC members of govt.,corporations,so-called "protective" agencies & to a lesser degree-the lemmings whose choice to step over the edge of the cliff in a "quiet & orderly" manner whose apathy allows the elite scum to continue while dragging those of us who aren't "sleepwalking" over the ledge and into their nuclear hell so easily! More friends & loved ones are coming down with or dying of cancer than EVER now and I just can't stand living in a world controlled by scum who knowingly harm innocent children(or anyone else for that matter!)Time to make waves…….

The only conclusion that can be drawn is we have a seriously ill
world leadership that lacks compassion. Their gods are power and money, their actions speak louder than words.
It is not just the Japanese government this has allowed this to be covered up, other governments and their leaderships are complicit in helping them. Criminal that any government east, or west would allow this to happen to children on such a mass scale. What is particularly tragic, is that these governments could have, and should have, prevented this from happening!
Informed parents, would have made the correct choices to keep their children
safe, and healthy.

The radio interview is well worth the 30 minutes needed. Caldicott, intensely intelligent and well-spoken, did a great service by pointing out the mendacity of the phrase "low dose radiation." She made clear that for surrounding cells, the radiation is high, intense, and persistent. The "low dose" meme benefits the nuclear promoters. Some other term is needed. I propose "isolated high-dose" or "particulate high dose" or something similar. The word "internal" might help to break down the other mendacious emphasis on external dose. Perhaps "persistent internal particulate high-dose radiation." That's a bit long perhaps. Wrapping up: the sooner a proper term is agreed upon and put into widespread use, the better. There is ongoing information warfare, and those who control the language can set the terms of the debate.
Whenever the phrase "low dose radiation" comes up in the context of a nuclear accident , those who know better must counter with "persistent internal particulate high-dose radiation" or some better phrase. Perhaps Dr. Caldicott would offer her opinion if she sees this.

Call it what it is, 'fallout' with that word alone the implications are many.

Suggestions:
persistent local high-dose radiation
persistent internal local high-dose radiation
persistent locally concentrated high-dose radiation
persistent focal high-dose radiation
persistent intra-focal high-dose radiation

I would call it "Long-Term Fall-IN" as that says it all!
Report Comment
J. said those wise words:
"There is ongoing information warfare, and those who control the language can set the terms of the debate."
J. demonstrated this with "low-dose radiation", which becomes "high-dose radiation", when you choose a different perspective.
Another example would be "fall-out"/"fall-in".
"Fall-in" is original and short – a real invention! For a moment I thought, you are relating this term to the effect of nuclear "fall-out" to our planet/biosphere. Perhaps we should reject the term "nuclear fall-out" whenever it comes our way and name it "nuclear fall-in" instead?
"Out" we use for things we get rid off and never see again. (Take out the trash!)
"In" we use for things that stay with us.
Report Comment
Interesting comments. Yes, perspective is crucial, but I think objectively, "locally high dose" is correct for internally ingested particles.. In any case, "low dose" in unacceptable, and the terms "persistent" and "internal" seem important to me. A good phrase would be one that makes a memorable acronym.
Report Comment
Persistent Particulate Internal Ionizing Radiation Emitter.
Acronym: PPIIRE, pronounced as "pyre," as in funeral pyre.
This leaves out "high" and "low" in the interest of objective accuracy.
If there are any MDs on the list, they may know of existing terminology that is more suitable.
Report Comment
Your initial idea was to replace "low" by "high". Good idea, you should stick to that. After thinking about it, the term "low-dose radiation" is wrong in any case. There is no "low". There is only "normal" (what our cells had to endure on average before Marie Curie: cosmic radiation and other sources) and "additional". "Normal"+"additional"="above normal"="high"
What about
"spot high-dose radiation"
or
"high-dose radiation spot"?
Report Comment
The terms grow longer and more unwieldly… granted there's some scare-power in that, but a phrase that takes full line to write out is never really going to catch on.
My personal take is to simplify, possibly to the extreme, the nuclear energy debate is already full enough of impenetrable jargon with innoccuous sounding simplifications for like "low-dose radiation", "spent fuel" etc. for the public.
Unfortunately the best I can come up with right away is "long-term spot exposure". Surely there are better terms – but approaching it from another direction, if hot particles is what we seem to be talking about, what exactly is wrong with "hot particles" which is already existing and accepted term? Though some education on what they mean would surely be appropriate.
Report Comment
Good points. Hot particles, fuel fleas — these are already in use. I think "internal" and "persistent" are valuable, though. Best to give it some more thought.

Wikipedia defines Hot Particles with "A hot particle is a microscopic piece of radioactive material, which can become lodged in living tissue and deliver a concentrated dose of radiation to a small area." so those very concepts are already built-in to "Hot Particle".
I have the impression that most of the public don't quite grasp the full meaning of "Hot Particles" though, and "even" (not a surprise, seeing as anyone regardless of motives or affiliation) Wikipedia's article stresses many authorities declaring long-term internal exposure is no worse than external. I can call this bullshit merely on the account that for example alpha-radiation can't pass the surface of the skin, thus alpha-emitters ONLY contribute to radiation dose internally.
After sleeping on it overnight, I personally settled on "long-term internal exposure" if the implication of hot particles needs to be explained. The Wikipedia article adds (synonyms) sustained and concentrated radiation bombardment, which could be useful if aiming for maximum shock value.

This article is really good and backs up Dr. Caldicott's teachings:
Nuclear radiation: There is no safe dose
By Romeo F. Quijano, M.D.

Important point from the article:
"The authorities apparently refer to the so-called standards of permissible or acceptable limits set by the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission as basis for declaring that exposure levels of the public are "small" and within "safety" limits and that significant risk of harm is limited to the immediate vicinity of the power plants. These standards, in fact, have been set to accommodate the interests of the nuclear industry and countries with nuclear weapons."
Read the last sentence again.

Another good point from the article:
"The "small" amount of radiation, claimed to be "safe" by authorities, added to our increasingly fragile environment will cause serious harm to the health of human beings and other living organisms all over the world. Radioactive particles, especially Plutonium, Strontium, and Cesium are bioaccumulative, extremely persistent and highly toxic."

From a person who had to learn the ins-and-outs… of closed loop waste managment on a personal scale?
More than half the folks in this US of A… do not have town plumbing when talking about waste. So, even if one does everything one can to get the nasty stuff out of the body as fast as it gets in? Such people will then have a radioactive collection (Accumulation) tank of their very own in their back yards. Again… it's not a factor most folks put any thoughts into. Japan has this particular MAJOR grade of a problem already… and it coats all the pipes… and yes, that goes for all the water ones as well. It's long since been a fools-effort in TX… due to radon… systematic pipe replacments.
So, by letting folks eat radioactive food… consider the long-term damage to our infrastructure as well as all the most cherished people, and children that have lost their lives.

Regarding the important comments above regarding "low dose": I think we need to use the phrase Persistent Ihalable and Ingetstible Ionizing Particles. (PIIIPs)
Note that the persistence pertains to the particle both outside the body and inside. This is important. We're conditioned to think of nuclear accidents as having an end. In fact many particles will be around for much longer than all of recorded human history to date.
This means that one may inhale or ingest an ionizing particle virtually anywhere on earth, at any time, in any location, utterly without awareness or any possible prophylaxis. This is the horrible reality that the "low dose" phrase is intended to obscure.
Watch videos of kids playing on contaminated parkland and Japan and you understand. They are ingesting and inhaling PIIIPs.
PIIIPs.
Easy to remember and accurate.

PIIPS nicely covers parameters of Time & contact vectors.
Kids can say PIIPS too.
Less formally, perhaps conversationally, one could say "cell-zap" or "bio-kill"…

and to clearly attribute, any useage to be preceded by "nuke"…

People that die after being contaminated should not be cremated; that will just spread more radiation around. As if that matters now.
