CHIBA, Oct. 26 — “High levels of radiation have been detected on the premises of two elementary schools here, local education authorities have revealed,” reports Mainichi.
11.3 microsieverts of radiation per hour was detected near a ditch at the Abiko Municipal Daiichi Elementary School on Sept. 15. The amount of radioactive cesium measured in a soil sample was 60,768 Becquerels/kg.
“To convert from ‘per kilogram’ to ‘per square meter’, Japan’s Nuclear Safety Commission uses the factor of 65.” (SOURCE)
Using this conversion factor, the sample contained the equivalent of 3,949,920 becquerels of cesium per square meter.
“1.48 million becquerels of cesium 137 per square meter [is] the standard used for forced resettlement after the 1986 Chernobyl accident,” noted the Daily Yomiuri.
Also in Chiba, at the Abiko Municipal Namiki Elementary School, 10.1 microsieverts per hour of radiation was detected near where swimming pool sludge had been buried.
