Kyodo News, Aug 30, 2014: Fukushima No. 1 chief feared nuclear doom for eastern Japan — The chief of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant said in testimony before his death that he feared the core meltdowns he was trying to contain in March 2011 would cause catastrophic damage to eastern Japan… “Our image was a catastrophe for eastern Japan… I thought we were really dead.”… Yoshida died of esophageal cancer… March 14, 2011, when it looked like the containment vessel of reactor No. 2 was going to fail and pollute the area with high amounts of radiation, Yoshida said he thought he was finished. “I really don’t want to recall this part,” he said, because he was bracing for the worst – a total failure in which the fuel melts and breaches both the pressure vessel and the containment vessel. [But] air pressure in the containment vessel dropped, allowing the fire engines to get the water in.

Were fire engines actually able to ‘get the water in’ to Unit 2? Here’s what the Final Report of the Investigation Committee on the Accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations (established by the Japanese government) has to say:

  • At Unit 2 [it’s] believed that water injection was disabled by about 12:30 [Mar. 14] at the latest. Afterwards… it is believed that core exposure and damage were underway
  • Although alternative water injection was being carried out at Unit 2 from about 19:57 on March 14, 2011 onward, the seawater that was being sucked up by the fire trucks… was also simultaneously being injected into Unit 3… the thinking is that they were unable to maintain the discharge pressure that was needed by and sufficient for the alternative water injection into Unit 2.
  • From about 19:57…  it is not believed that an adequate water injection flow could be maintained [and] water injection was either not carried out at all or was largely not carried out… the D/W pressure plunged rapidly at about 20:03 on March 14. So it can be believed that a leak had appeared in the PCV [Primary Containment Vessel] or its peripherals in the period prior to about 21:55.
  • Such damage as would degrade the containment function occurred to the Unit 2 PCV or its Peripherals between around 13:45 and around 18:10 on March 14 is given sufficient recognition, and there is an exceedingly high possibility that more significant damage occurred subsequently.
  • See also: Tepco: We should’ve told public sooner… we failed to cool fuel after meltdowns

Perhaps there was a reason why the person in charge at Fukushima Daiichi was “bracing for the worst – a total failure in which the fuel melts and breaches…the containment vessel”?

How can we force them to stop lying to us?

    Well, nine-eleven truth for starters.

We must tear down the entire system and start from scratch

Capitalism has failed. I said this in the fall of '11 and got a lot of push back here. Now?? I think more understand.

    • johnnyo: How can we force them to stop lying to us?

Arrest the perps at the top of the nuclear corp food chain; cause Mr Moniz to be the interim DoE WIPP boy… to over see the remaining DoE DoD Nuclear cycle activities: waste management… lol

one thought that crossed my mind on reading your question…

      • johnnyo

wish I could just walk into their offices and arrest them. Or u and together Obvious. Wouldn't that be cool. But in the real world, as it stands, they are untouchable.

We must tear down the entire Military-Gov-Media-Corp Complex. Hell of a task. Will not happen unless we zero in like a laser on 9/11 TRUTH. Our only prayer. They got sloppy, left us too many clues. We can ignore them and submit. Or, we can begin the dismantling process. In other words, peaceful revolution.

      • PurpleRain PurpleRain

I wish that we could arrest and charge all of those at the top of the Nuclear Power .. and those at the top of the Chemical Corporations and Mining and all the others who don't clean up their own waste!!!! Regulations are always necessary and required to keep Capitalism in check… the only other alternative is uprising.

    • I think that Joe/Jane public does understand what's going on, but most of them are afraid that anarchy will replace the totally corrupt system we have now.

From about 2016 onwards huge numbers of people, worldwide, will start having serious health issues: cancers, heart disease, genetic defects, et al, and it will continue over the following decades.

This may or may not be a tipping point, because who knows what other things will be happening. We are now going through an almost exact re-run of events in the former part of the 20th century: the rise of fascism, economic collapse, and, eventually, a world war.

Due to corruption and bad management, America, for example, now owes so much debt that the only way out of jail is to start a major war and steal the resources from other lands.

The interesting thing is to see if the general public buy the con, yet again.

In this wired-up world I don't think they will.

That's when things will get really interesting, albeit a little bit hairy for those folks who crave 'stability'.

      • We Not They Finally

"I think that Joe/Jane public does understand what's going on." I think more likely that "Joe/Jane public" has little clue. Many people do seem to know something is terribly wrong, but may buy anything but the obvious.

Being propagandized takes on energy of its own. Like when it was recently reported on the local news (because Cambridge, home of the company, is right next door) that bio-tech company Sarepta had developed an ebola vaccine that had "already been tested for human safety," no one gasped and said, "WHAT?? Who would volunteer for such testing?" Then when it was blandly added that the $291 million to develop it came not from the CDC, but from the U.S. Department of Defense[holy WMD!!], it was another big ho-hum.

If the line coming up is that global warming somehow caused all the fish die-offs, or that it is just localized, or that next year might be better, chances are people WILL buy it.

Look, for many weeks now, we hear about the terrible Ukrainian separatists and how THEY are driving us towards WW III. Like anyone in power even CARES about Ukrainian freedom? Turns out that Putin is going on an all-out assault on the petrodollar[!], which will bankrupt the U.S., so turning Russia into a pariah is just "coincidentally" occurring with the rise of the terrible "Russian-back separatists?" Are we there? Do we know? Is anyone getting that upset about being lied to?

"Joe/Jane public"? Not too smart a cat.

        • Ana Ana

Almost all of the Joe/Jane folks I talk to are clueless and want to stay that way. This includes educated folks (PhD in chemistry, lawyers, doctors) and not educated folks. I feel like I am rolling a rock uphill every time I start talking to someone. Luckily I met someone from this list by accident last week and it was wonderful to talk to a person with their brains on.

Consider these numbers. In WW1, civilian deaths were around 10%. In WW2, they were around 50%. Vietnam 70%. Iraq 90%. Civilians need to think long and hard about starting WW3 and our inculturated callousness and the insidious ways in which we are goaded into war. It is an art and a science. And we are their prey. Its not just a " tremendous light show", they don't just kill "the evil doers". You cannot and you will never be able to achieve peace at the end of the barrel of a gun or the bottom of a bomb. It is all a lie and a supremely selfish act of institutional self preservation.

The media is the issue. Without the connivance of the media none of the coups, regime changes, scare stories based on made up science, false flag terror incidents, tax evasion, etc, would have been possible.
And seeing as how the MSM is not so much "in bed" with power as it is married to it, an alternative media must be constructed from the ground up.

Any studies been done on how many of these (then) children are still alive?

Did he really say this? – if so, he really hits the nail on the head. Puts him in the top 0.1% of the human race in basic common sense. It would appear the world would be far better off with a man dead for 3400 years at the helm, even though he had some lapses in judgment himself in facing external/internal political threats. The next 300 years should be a bit stressful with a full radioactive core release from 3 reactors into the Pacific. TEPCO's unwillingness (as a profit seeking corporation) to spend the necessary money to block it seals the fate of the North Pacific. The human population will need to be culled by Two Billion poor people or so to bring the safe food supply into balance with the population it can support. Might get extremely unpleasant within 100 years.

“I thought we were really dead” — Fear of “nuclear doom for eastern Japan” — “A total failure in which the fuel melts and breaches… containment vessel”

Conclusion : Eastern Japan is doomed

  • rogerthat

Yoshida feared ''nuclear doom for eastern japan'' if the worst happened.
Kan feared 50 million people would need to be evacuated if the worst happened.
Chris Harris, former licensed Senior Reactor Operator & engineer, Aug 21, 2014 (at 24:00 in): NHK just [broadcasted] that many studies are showing… that multiple cores — parts of it, or some, or even most of it — had been ejected. We thought that too. Once you breach containment, that was one of my big concerns — where did the core go after an explosion like? Whether it be steam or hydrogen explosion or a combination of both… it got ‘sneezed out’ all over the place. It’s totally – it’s a huge mess.
    – Anyone with half a brain knows the worst happened. Anyone with half a brain who watched the videos of the explosions that reduced these giant nuclear reactors to rubble knows the worst happened. Yoshida died of cancer and Kan, once wildly pro-nuclear, is now profoundly anti-nuclear and spreading the message far and wide.
The United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organisation, various Nuclear Regulatory Commissions, major governments and their officials, a large number of alleged medical experts and a large number of alleged scientists appear to have less than half a brain. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

    • rogerthat

… but don't worry, Japan's Ministry of Trade and Industry has a Plan:
      http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/564845/20140902/trade-industry-ministry-urges-japanese-save-toilet.htm#.VAT_BkLLjao
      By Vittorio Hernandez September 2
Sept 1 is National Disaster Prevention Day in Japan and to observe it, the Trade and Industry Ministry advised citizens to stock toilet paper…
The ministry admits that the paper used to wipe bottoms after answering the call of nature is normally not considered a relief material, unlike more basic items such as food, water and clothing. But they only realise the value of the toilet paper when become aware of its shortage or during an hour of great need…
While tissue paper may substitute, ministry officials pointed out that toilet paper dissolves in water, but tissue paper do not, running the risk of clogging toilets and sewerage pipes…
      – true, still tragic but extremely funny, so it's ok to laugh, i think ha ha

      • weegokiburi weegokiburi

Come next big quake we will all be wondering about the consequences at Japan's other NPPs and shitting ourselves about what is going to happen.
So lots of toilet paper seems like a good plan. 🙂

      • rogerthat

… it's a serious story, and ends on this alarming note:
''… Besides Japan, Venezuela also suffered from a toilet paper shortage 12 months ago.''

        • weegokiburi weegokiburi

Seems like an opportunity for Abe.
Rather than exporting NPP technology Japan could export TPP (toilet paper plant) technology to Venezuala.
          It's a win win deal.
Japan has the worlds no1 toilet tech by far.

    The Yoshida Testimony

"The Yoshida testimony report comprises seven parts and contains about 500,000 characters in total. It is printed on more than 400 pages of A4-size paper.

Eleven of the 13 interview sessions with Yoshida were conducted at a Japan Football Association Academy meeting room at the J-Village soccer training facility, 20 kilometers south of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The remaining two sessions took place in a quake-proof control center building, Yoshida’s workplace, at the Fukushima No. 1 plant.

The government’s Investigation Committee on the Accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations of Tokyo Electric Power Co. interviewed 772 individuals over a total of 1,479 hours. The Yoshida testimony was compiled during that process."

In addition, when one person is completely disrespectful, because of mob mentality, others will jump in also. And you can't say that you and others haven't been totally disrespectful many, many times over the last 3.5 years. Either a person values all life, or no life at all including one's own.

And your metaphor "stretching one's neck" is definitely alluding to beheading. So it is a threat to behead me, if I don't agree with whatever your political game is. A warning is a threat, and it is also a felony whether or not one carries out the threat.

And how many times have you now used this threat against me? Is it 3 or 4 times?

You also used the beheading metaphor for Sister Megan Rice. And you criticized Arnie Gundersen many times also. So you definitely seem determined to attack those who are most anti-Nuke.

              “They Use Reverse Logic

”Reversalism is another term I have coined. Reversalism explains the phenomena that exists in the culture of death, by which logic is turned upside down and there is much play on words. The reality is that if we reverse the typical Muslim accusations to reflect on them, we would get the truth. When one examines all the supposed conspiracies, one finds that only the terrorist conspiracy is real. Jihadism has one main conspiracy – the destruction of modern secular society and the establishment of Islamic hegemony.

“In this reversalist mentality, Zionists are Nazis, liberating Iraq from Saddam is an occupation, death is life, sorrow is joy, conspirators are victims, and victims are terrorists. It’s quite amazing. So much of this reversalist mindset is a result of trusting conjecture. Conjecture is always the tool of bigoted scholarship, if one can indeed call it scholarship…”

I just posted an article on Hamas in the Ukraine. Please correct the journalist. As for Mr. Shoebat, please read his quotations from the Quran, Hadith, and other scholarly Islamic documents and the Christian and Jewish Bibles.

Anyway, he is not a Zionist, but a Christian.

If you really want to criticize the Bible, you have to first read it and make quotations that you disagree with.

Mr. Shoebat has a Muslim father and a Christian mother. According to Islam he is still a Muslim, even though he professes Christianity.

It is better to stick with the facts and logical arguments and skip attacking individuals.

If you look at the beginning of this sub thread, we were responding to RobG as to why people didn't use their real names on this website. Then it all turned into an attack on me. I hadn't referred to any person, just that people seem very hostile at times.

I remember having asked people sometimes if they were a shill. That is much different than calling someone a shill. But maybe there is a language barrier and there is miscommunication. Asking a question is just asking for clarification. And I really don't remember asking you? I do sometimes wonder why people are on this website because it seems that their comments are really more interested in a particular political position more than trying to get rid of nuclear energy. But I really don't remember many of your comments except about how to get rid of bronchitis, which saved my life so I am actually extremely hurt by your attacks now.

Thought I would share this rant, posted and directed to a friend in the industry who just doesn't get it…

    "/rant
There a a lot of things I could counter argue, but it doesn't really matter.

Nuclear has been sold as a safe alternative, with the calculated risk of meltdown and loss of containment at almost impossible.

Fukushima from the beginning has had not one, or two, but three meltdowns, and loss of containment. All the bullshit articles, models, predictions on the impacts of fukushima are based on one small release, and not meltdowns. It took Tepco how many years to finally admit to complete meltdowns?

How much Plutonium was in Reactor 3? Pu-239 half-life 24,000 years.
    Pu-240 6,500 years. Am-241 432 years, I-129 15.7 million years.

Close to 100 tonnes of MOX fuel in reactor 3. Melted down, melted out, and in contact with ground water beneath the plant. Tepco says 400 tonnes of water is leaking in to the ocean daily. Every day since March 2011.

Fuel fragments have been found over 50km away from the plant. Reactor 3 exploded, and either fuel from the pool, or from the reactor core itself was blown into the environment.

Tepco has no plan, and they have admitted it is not possible to retain the coria. They don't know where the cores are, they don't have a plan to stop water from coming in to contact with the coria, they can't even send robots to inspect.

Comparing Fukushima to Chernobyl isn't logical. Chernobyl had a smaller core, and only…

  • jcfougere jcfougere

Chernobyl had a smaller core, and only a partial meltdown, which was contained. Fukushima has three meltdowns, no containment, and much larger cores.

How then, can anyone still claim nuclear is safe, clean, and has less impact than other energies?

Sure the media likes to show numbers of deaths directly relating to each industry, but what difference does that make when no one is even doing the science to rule out low level radiation? Low level was given the a-okay rubber stamp, and that's it! Of course no deaths are attributed to nuclear, no one is doing the science to prove otherwise!

Forbes has 0 credibility. Their "experts" tell the public that radioactive fallout, including Cs-137, are the same as K-40 and background radiation from space. The talk comparing man-made isotopes and Bananas is criminal. Since you're in the industry I'm sure you know there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever between the effects of natural radiation and man-made radiation. External and internal radiation aren't the same. You can't compare a flight or an x-ray to eating contaminated food.

    Specific activity for K-40 0.0000071 (Ci/g)
    Specific activity for Cm-134 1,300 (Ci/g)

So much misinformation, so much downplaying of risks. How is all that man-made radiation going to affect the ocean? Is it worth the risks? In Canada we have plants the shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. We can't control fission when an accident happens, and we can't take back…

  • jcfougere jcfougere

last millions of years once they enter the biosphere. So is it the truth that eating food contaminated with Cm-134 and Sr-90 is safe? What about the other 1000's of daughters that are created during fission? Why do I keep hearing the same old bullshit reports that fukushima is less than an x-ray, and like eating a banana, that doesn't even make fucking sense!

I hope for all our sake I'm wrong. I really don't relish in the idea that everyone I know may die of cancer, and soon. Because really that's what we're all facing isn't it? There's no denying that in 2011 we all breathed in hot particles. They have been collected in air filters all over North America. So the only question that remains, is is it safe to breathe it in, and will it give us cancer? Will a hot particle stuck in my lungs give me cancer? Will the Strontium I absorb in to my bones give me leukemia? How about will the Cesium deposit in my heart muscles and give me a heart attack? If the radiation that comes from these isotopes is harmless then we're good to go. I really think you have to defy logic to come to that conclusion. No one is even talking about it, no one is testing for it, and so we'll probably never know.

Nuclear industry is huge, I know. We use it to scan our bodies, we use it to see our bones, we inject it into our veins to kill cancer cells, we irradiate food with Cobalt-60 to make it "safe". Canada exports Uranium.

I'm no expert, but I do understand simple science…

  • jcfougere jcfougere

I'm no expert, but I do understand simple science. Meltdowns continue to happen and release radio-isotopes, they bio-accumulate and make their way in to our bodies. They irradiate local tissues, but we're expected to believe there's a safe dose for which no negative effects occur. It's been proven there is no safe dose, internal or external, there are no health benefits to any radiation, but that science is ignored in favor of the industry, the economy, and jobs. What good is a paycheck if we all end up sick and dying?

In the heading it is mentioned that a lot of work began on the 14th of March to try to cool the reactor cores. The Earthquake and Tsunami happened on the afternoon of the 11th. That would mean that nothing was done to prevent this disaster in the intervening 72 hours. That is incredulous. I know it is ex post facto. We still have this mess. Still, I would like an answer. I would like to see the person, or persons, responsible for this inexcusable error punished. Remember the Nuclear Industry assured us that nothing like this could ever happen because of safeguards built into the system. Those liars should be punished too. So why was nothing done to prevent the meltdowns until it was too late?

Fukushima governor sets 5 conditions for storing radioactive waste
    THE ASAHI SHIMBUN
The Fukushima governor issued five conditions for accepting radioactive debris at a planned interim storage facility, including a law stipulating that the waste will be moved outside the prefecture within 30 years.
Governor Yuhei Sato’s demand for the legislation came at a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Sept. 1. During the talks, Sato conveyed the decision of the prefecture and the towns of Okuma and Futaba, which co-host the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, to accept construction of the storage facility…
… local residents are concerned that the new storage facility in Okuma and Futaba will end up being the final disposal site for the estimated 20 million cubic meters of debris, enough to fill 13 to 18 Tokyo Domes, generated from the cleanup process. … The four other conditions for accepting shipments of the waste were: …
Ishihara said the central government will take such requests seriously.
    – It sounds like 20 million cubic metres of seriously radioactive topsoil and other radioactive debris have found their final resting place. This 20 million cubic metres, enough to fill up to 18 Tokyo Domes, has already been moved once. It must now be collected from 54,000 different locations across the prefecture and driven to the new site, to be stored in what?

    • rogerthat

… A radiation cemetery of 14 square kilometres, covered by thousands of concrete blockhouses of waste? Who knows? Will it be a tourist attraction? Will anyone want to live or farm nearby, or eat local food or drink local water? Who knows, anything is possible.
But will this radioactive cemetery be moved somewhere else in 30 years' time? You tell me.

      • rogerthat

My understanding is that this radioactive soil is the top 5cm of soil from contaminated land; that there is a lot more contaminated topsoil that needs to be collected, perhaps another 80 million cubic metres of it. Where will the new cemeteries be built? Who will accept them? Who will live next door?
Finally, what about the soil below the removed topsoil? Radioactive particles did not read the script that said they should stop leaching into the soil at the 5cm mark.
It all sounds grotesque. The Godzilla Cemeteries.

    • He better add fines in case that waste is not removed and ability to lien property of TEPCO, because they are already welching on payments for small stuff that they agreed to pay, like compensation to radiation refugees as settlement.

If they are not paying that, what makes him think they will honor this agreement, which means spending WAY more money?

  • PhilipUpNorth PhilipUpNorth

The FDNPPs were designed to function only when the power was on. The tsumani took out harborside cooling pumps, backup generator fuel tanks, highline towers, and control room instruments. In the first days, auto batteries were wired into pressure and temperature monitoring circuits, fire engine water didn't reach the reactors, and replacement generators and switch gear arrived in the wrong voltage. The government privately debated the size of evacuation zones, and failed to distribute iodine tablets to the public. Meanwhile, TEPCO wanted to abandon the area, the government ordered them to stay, and the Fukushima 50, those who stayed on, rode out the four explosions, and the melt-downs, and the melt-throughs, and the melt-outs, that will render Japan a wasteland. Who are the criminals, here? Those at GE who designed these flawed machines? Those who delivered suitcases full of bribe money over all those years, and those governmental officials who took the bribes? Or the indecisive government officials who blocked evacuations? And now, as groundwater collects contamination from nuclear debris underneath Units1-4, delivering death to the Pacific Ocean, big contractors propose unworkable "Frozen Walls" for their piece of the cleanup loot, amidst the leaks, accidents, and neglect of a defunct nuclear corporation, who is to say who the real criminals are in all this?

    This thread is a lost cause, anyway. Didn't miss much over the weekend, did I, 'Newsers? ;

    • rogerthat

Thank you PUN for a fine summary. Pretty gloomy stuff. Nero fiddled while Rome burnt. Nothing changes, ha ha.

    • PhilipUpNorth PhilipUpNorth

Sorry about the gloomy outlook, rogerthat.
Spent the long weekend doing things like watching football games and NASCAR races.
When I finally get back to ENEnews, I run into this terrible OT thread.
Sometimes, I really have to wonder why I bother.
Half the folks seem to advocate violent revolution.
("Bring out the guillotine, and the first of the GE and Tepco employees.
It's going to be a long day.
      Hope you brought your kniting.")
The other half of the folks seem to fear exposure and persecution by the police state, NSA, etc.
Clearly, this thread has lost its focus.
Many thanks to those who stay on topic! 😉

      • johnnyo

PUP, not sure I understand your beef. Staying on topic is a noble cause to be sure, but as you demonstrate, the articles do not tell us any new information. Nothing we didn't already know so to stay completely on topic would be what?? repeating the same old tired worn out phrases that have been said a million times?

What fun!! Lets preach to the choir. Wont do a bit of good, but hey, maybe it will make me feel better. Yeah boy, them TEPCO's are some real poopy heads. Japan sure is toast, right? Yep. Sucks dont it? Yep. Hey, wow, that guy was afraid. What a shocker! Proves he knew it was real bad….stop the freekin presses!! They knew????

I began this thread with some advice for anybody truly interested in fixing the problem. If you believe the official 9/11 fairy tale why not just say so. To claim offering suggestions for saving our planet is off topic seems rather like missing the point of this sites entire existence.

Likewise telling people that advanced civilizations have come and gone many times on this planet is spot ON topic if the issue is understanding WTF is going on. The evil clutching our futures neck would not fare well if humanity knew other civilizations had destroyed themselves. We could actually learn lessons, AND ACT ON what we learn.

Capitalism must be ended. Period. If you wanna cry about that isn't on topic, I feel sorry for you.

If it really upsets many others and/or admin….fix the OT forum.

        • johnnyo

and just to reiterate…I clearly called for….AM calling for a PEACEFUL revolution.

There should not exist any private corporations, duh. We, as an intelligent species, should decide the energy policies for our globe without ANY consideration for which policy will make a very small fraction obscenely wealthy.

Philip your posts are very informative. But to pigeonhole people into two camps is ridiculous.
What type of attitude do you suggest is appropriate for such maniacal destructive cataclysmic actions?

        Should it be complete rage?
        Should it be extreme paranoia?
Should it be that the psychopaths will have a cathartic moment of altruism?

What is the appropriate response for this, Philip?

PUN…The Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System in one of three main components of the Emergency Core Cooling System. Here is what Wikipedia reports of this system:

The RCIC system operates on high-pressure steam from the reactor itself, and thus is operable with no electric power other than battery power to operate the control valves. Those turn the RCIC on and off as necessary to maintain correct water levels in the reactor. (If run continuously, the RCIC would overfill the reactor and send water down its own steam supply line.) During a station blackout (where all off-site power is lost and the diesel generators fail) the RCIC system may be "black started" with no AC and manually activated. The RCIC system condenses its steam into the reactor suppression pool. The RCIC can make up this water loss, from either of two sources: a makeup water tank located outside containment, or the wetwell itself. [8]

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_water_reactor_safety_systems

The RCIC is only one of three emergency backup systems, the other two being the High Pressure Injection Cooling System (HPCI), and the Isolation Condenser (IC). Any one of the three systems on each reactor has the ability to prevent a core meltdown.

That means that in the case of these three reactor meltdowns that NINE emergency contingency systems failed simultaneously. All nine failed?

Each was designed to withstand 8.0 quake. Fukuquake: 6.8

      Sorry OT. peace

      • PhilipUpNorth PhilipUpNorth

All components of the ECCS (Emergency Core Cooling System) failed at Fukushima.
Here is an article on what exactly happened.
        http://brainmindinst.blogspot.com/2011/07/fukushima-failure-by-design.html
Many thanks, ISeePinkClouds, for the clarification.

        • PhilipUpNorth PhilipUpNorth

"In addition to high pressure coolant injection (HPCI) and massive low pressure coolant injection (LPCI) pumps, the isolation condenser (IC) constitutes a third-line option of injecting auxiliary water into the RPV during the shutdown of BWR-3s like Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1. The IC condenses steam from the RPV and reintroduces the water near the vessel head entirely passively driven by convection and gravity. No pumps are needed. According to the scram log of Unit 1, the IC was initiated immediately after the seismic SCRAM, but had run dry for unknown reasons within two hours (see previous post with the title "Fukushima: Failure of the Mind" published May 17, 2011)."
          From the above linked article.
The IC might have run dry within two hours, because all of the internal plumbing of the RPV had by that time been destroyed by the melting fuel assemblies. My thought is that the IC never operated successfully at all. 🙁
          Designed To Fail. 😉

        • ISeePinkClouds

Thank you PUN for taking an interest in my question. Of course, as far as FDNPP is concerned the question is irrelevant. To the fact that this type of reactor design is being used in the U.S. the question may be relevant.
I did follow your suggested link, and the links within. Certainly you noticed that many suppositions proposed in Peter's Blog, contain the words "may have" and "could have". For that reason it is a good article upon which to base a discussion and further investigation.
I certainly do not believe that this forum is appropriate for that discussion, though I know of none better. Over time it may be discussed in bits and pieces at appropriate times, but generally, I doubt there is much interest as to why these meltdowns occurred since we are now dealing with the real life, real time repercussions.
Admittedly there is a world of interconnectedness in the various constituents to nuclear power plant safety systems of which I am just beginning to comprehend. Though, it is not beyond my comprehension. I can, and will, tell you that I do not believe these safety systems failed in the manner that is commonly reported, nor do I believe that human error was involved to the degree commonly suggested. There are too many unanswered question, and too much supposition.
I believe that in time I will know who is to blame, as well as at least a better idea of how a disaster like this can be prevented. The better idea would be to abandon nuclear power…

Blaming everything on CO2 or HAARP is just a read herring for the destruction of the weather caused by nuclear power plants and weapons production. The entire energy cycle for nuclear power plants creates huge amounts of CO2, and the weather is catastrophic because of nuclear power plants and especially reprocessing of nuclear fuel and the ozone holes got very much larger because of Fukushima. Also high altitude nuclear testing in the past destroyed much of the atmosphere and created artificial radiation belts around the earth in addition to the Van Allen belts.
