John McLaughlin of “The McLaughlin Group” said that politicians want more nuclear plants in their districts because there would be more jobs in security.
The main safety issue of nuclear plants is security; safety goes hand in hand with the TSA-style police state.
The Japanese are the smartest technological wizards on the planet.
Yet, other countries aren’t worried about the “mistakes” the Japanese made, i.e. waterproof generators and A/C backup systems (says John Ritch, Head of the World Nuclear Association).
    Wonder why they’re not worried!

We know that just because the Omaha reactor is shutdown means nothing, if the cooling pumps are corrupted by a flood. They must have a contingency plan for that possibility. Everybody say, Yes.

Live webcam question: The front wall of Reactor #1 appears yellow instead of the speckled blue original color. Is this a sun-reflection issue or is wall heating up and destroying the paint?

Something else to continue monitoring as this evolves.

Well what’s bad is that the already-sandbagged FORT CALHOUN NUCLEAR REACTOR 20 miles north of Omaha, and the sandbagged EPPLEY AIRFIELD are facing estimated crests next Saturday 4-6 feet higher, at which point the airport will be 10 feet below the Missouri flood level.

Several other sandbagged sites are already reporting water coming up through the ground, so after holding water away the additional problem develops of holding the water down.

The Missouri River has been rising 8-10 inches/day, and news, weather and flood alerts, and a closeup boatride video of the sandbagged Fort Calhoun reactor, are available below:

Just a few quick thoughts on Thorium.
Nilu stopped their global radiation forecast mid May 2011, and then by the beginning of June they stopped their national local radiation readings with no warning. I was wondering why? So I did a bit of fishing around.
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/02/15/us-norway-nuclear-thorium-idUSL1538756620080215

The tentative conclusion I reached was that Norway wants to be a big exporter of Thorium and so did not wish to rock the nuclear boat.
Thorium is the nuclear industries PR wet dream if the truth of Fukushima gets out. It is also Norway’s wet dream to replace their diminishing oil resources. Also, it is in Norway’s best interest to support the slightly problematic financial system, as they have invested all those oil billions within it (with a view to supporting the Norwegian economy for a long time into the future).
    http://www.torium.se/ThoriuminNorway.htm

I think that Norway has been pressurised by this fact. Why do I think this?
Norway is extremely pollution conscious and as far as I am aware they were still doing radiation testing in their own country even after they stopped the ever popular fallout forecasts. I think the timing of these two facts shows a dispute within the government agencies. Maybe though, they stopped local readings because of a huge increase in the atmosphere, that would possibly be another explanation of this last point, time will tell. Unless a whistleblower steps forward that is!
And for you techies out there, an interesting and possible teeth gritting resource ( I will let you disseminate this. Good luck!)

  • Missouri residents under the threat of more flooding from stressed levees
    June 13, 2011
HAMBURG, Iowa – The rising Missouri River ruptured two levees in northwest Missouri on Monday, sending torrents of flood waters over rural farmland toward a small town in Iowa and a resort community in Missouri. Flood waters are expected by Tuesday to reach a secondary levee protecting the partially evacuated town of about 1,100 people. But if that levee fails, parts of Hamburg could be under as much as 10 feet of standing water, officials said. The breach near Hamburg, in far southwest Iowa, is threatening more people. The town of about 1,100 residents was already partially evacuated, and water rushing from the 50-foot-wide hole in the levee is expected to reach a secondary levee protecting the town on Tuesday. If that levee fails,…

    @officerdave
    have contacted
    japan red cross
    green action japan
    hiroshima peace institute
    awaiting replies
still researching other suitable organisations and supporting info
    final draft of letter
    To whom it might concern
Subject; Parents and children of the Fukushima disaster exclusion zone.

I’ll try and be brief…I represent some international bloggers that wish to begin a campaign to offer respite to families of the Fukushima tragedy from the radioactive pollution that continues to build up in the surrounding areas of Japan, based on lessons learnt from Chernobyl.

The first step of the campaign is to develop a web site with a professional administrator that will act as a base to begin the campaign. This is already underway.
Step two is contacting a Japanese related NGO or other relevant organisations and individuals and step 3 is the PR campaign to secure homes or rooms around the world for disadvantaged\homeless Japanese families.
It seems that there is a lot of understandable negativity surrounding the disaster, however, the idea that people can be empowered to help create a more constructive and more positive way forward has resulted in me receiving very supportive feedback. I and others wish to encourage this positivity.
Could you advise, refer or support this campaign in any way? I think it is important for this campaign to focus on and keep intact homeless or destitute parents and children to minimize trauma.
This situation is unlike the Ukraine where children are sent away from their for certain periods to reduce their annual dosage as the particulates in the air are not reducing in Japan and I not going to mention issues surrounding spent fuel pool 4 etc.
The visa situation can be fast tracked when the Japanese Government lawyers realise that they can mitigate their long term costs (they have promised to underwrite TEPCO) by supporting this campaign. A Japanese family should be able to then leave Japan for a 3 month period. That would be a start. Then we need the housing or room offers.
At least this campaign could give hope to these families. Most European countries and others have highly developed social services and charities that could cope with such an influx of parents and children and most have good health support services and health charities. This could be made to work.
It seems that the media is slowly waking up. So now it seems is the time to begin such a campaign. I hope you agree.
If you wish to follow up on this matter, please feel free to contact me at sean.mcgee2@btinternet.com
I humbly await your response with anticipation
    Yours sincerely

Well, you have some good points. Rampant capitalism has creates the Japan nuclear incident. Now Russia (Putin) is not capitalistic enough yet, too close to Japan and knows by logic (and Cernobyl experience) how bad Japan accident means. There is no reason why experience from Cernobyl cannot be applied to Fukushima (which is 20 times or more worse). It is likely also that a lot of the news reporters in Western World do not even know much about nuclear disasters/ radiation.

Well, I can think of another campaign that needs all of our thinking caps pointed in the same direction… How do we sue, via the freedom of information act, for the data being collected around the world? Not only are our military, colleges, governmental agencies collecting this data, but so is the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, which has been apparently sharing all of it’s data with member states… umm… that includes the USA…this is the data set that had been utilized in various plume models from nilu, to ZAMG… all now down.. One has to wonder about the timing of ZAMG no longer providing data and the timing of the CTBTO meeting in Vienna on 6-8 through 6-10.. we taxpayers have paid for this data and it is pertinent to our health and well being to have access to the scientific truth of the matter.

Have to consider an average of 5 hot particles per person in Seattle, and 10 per day in Tokyo (A Gundersen).

I think it is 0.347 hot particles a day is a safe level with 5 per day a large risk for cancer.

        Report Comment

        • Here are some relevant excerpts from the above quoted report (dated from the 1970s but still seems relevant) http://www.hss.doe.gov/healthsafety/ihs/marshall/collection/data/ihp2/2968_.pdf
Seems to indicate that inhaling 5 or more “hot particles” (as defined below, and including Plutonium, for example) is a huge amount compared to the maximum recommended dose based on research at the time. Cancer risk is extremely hig.

“a hot particle is defined as a [n alpha-emitting] particle that contains sufficient activity to deliver at least 1000 rem/yr to the surrounding lung tissue. For isotopes having half-lives greater than one year, this would correspond to particles containing at least 0.07 pCi of alpha activity.” (p.51)

“we recommend that the MPLPB for members of the public be 0.2 hot particles, and the average lung burden for members of the public be 0.07 hot particles, a factor of 3 less than the maximum.” (p. 45)

          [it is recommended that...] For accidental releases exposure (10 CFR 100.ll(a) (l)) MPLI’B (2 hours exposure) = 10 hot particles” (p. 52)

“[...]the existinq biological evidence strongly sugqests
that an insoluble particle of respiratory tissue represents a risk of cancer induction of between 1/1000 and l/10,000.” (p.41)

[regarding experiments with Beagles exposed to Pu 239]:
“All of these experiments involved intense exposures
and a significant level of carcinogenesis. Severe damage
and disruption of tissue were associated with the exposures.
The most relevant lung experiment is Bair’s Pu
23902 inhalation study with beagles. Exposure was to
particulate of 0.25 u or 0.5 u median diameter; burdens were
in the uCi range. Twenty of the 21 dogs that survived more
than 1600 days post exposure had lung cancer. Many of these
cancers were multicentric in origin. The cancers again
appeared in conjunction with severe lung injury. Since the
natural- incidence of the disease is small, it appears that
at this level of exposure the induction of lung cancer is a
certainty durinq the normal beagle life span. At the same time,
time, since the pathological response is saturated in this
experiment, it is inappropriate to draw any inference about
the magnitude of the response at smaller burdens. The smallest
burden (at death) in a dog showing lung cancer was 0.2 uCi.
Presumably this would correspond to a particle burden of
about 10^7 particles. Burdens which are smaller by orders of
magnitude may still induce a substantial incidence of cancer.
Indeed, the cancer risk may, as for skin and soft tissues,
correspond to a risk per particle in the neighborhood of
          1/1000 to 1/10,000.”

Some go up to June 2011.

  • CONSTANT GREY CLOUD COVER IN PACIFIC NW

We’re starting to get some sunny days here now. But, we did have a constant grey cover just about all through the Fukushima disaster. The CTBTO says levels are generally decreasing. So, what causes the greyness?

Possibly Cesium Chloride which acts like silver iodide (used in cloud seeding).

    Cesium Chloride

Cesium-137 is usually found as Cesium Chloride, and can be used as a weapon in radiological terrorism:

    http://www.chemcases.com/nuclear/nc_17.html

“Nuclear experts say the main elements released are radioactive cesium and iodine. They can combine with the salt in sea water to become cesium chloride and sodium iodide, which are common and abundant elements and would readily dilute in the wide expanse of the Pacific, according to Steven Reese, director of the Radiation Center at Oregon State.”

So, I’m wondering if we’re getting cesium chloride from the ocean now through rain or other precipation, in fog, or just moisture and vapour.

And, this is greying out the sky and causing a constant overcast[?]

A hot particle is a small, highly radioactive object, with significant content of radionuclides. Because radioactivity can be inherent to a substance or induced, and there are many initial sources of radioactivity, hot particles can originate from a multitude of sources.
    [edit]Attributes

Hot particles present significant health hazard when ingested or entered the body by other means. They are several orders of magnitude more dangerous than the same amount of radiation emitted from a large source over the whole body because if ingested or inhaled, they do damage to cells at close proximity.

The size of hot particles contained in nuclear fallout ranges from 10 nanometers to 20 micrometers for the worldwide fallout; particles present in local fallout are significantly larger (100 micrometers to several millimeters).

Hot particles can consist of tiny specks (~10 micrometers sized) of nuclear fuel (so-called fuel fleas, due to their tendency to become electrically charged and then jump from surface to surface), or of other material activated by exposure to neutron radiation.
Hot particles can be identified by a Geiger counter, or by autoradiography. Their age and origin can be determined by their isotopic signature.

    • 1 cm – the width of your little finger (approx)

      1 micrometer = 1 millionth of a meter

      = 10^-6 meters

Think of dividing a 1 metre ruler into cm.

      1 m = 100 cm = 3.28083989501312 ft
      (2.5cm = 1 inch)

      1 cm = 10^-2 m = 1/100th m

Now, divide that cm into ten thousand.

      1/10,00th of 1 cm -> 10^-4 cm = x * micrometers?

      10^-4 cm = ? m

      10^-4 cm x 10^-2 m/cm = 10^-6 m

So, one micrometer is one ten thousandth of a centimeter.

Here is a nice mental reference to get some perspective.

    1mil (1/1000 inch) = 25.4 um (microns)
A typical kids blond hair is usually on the order of half a mil to maybe 1 mil, hence 12um to 25 um.

You can still see 1um of resolution with a middle of the road optical microscope. You won’t be able to see 1um it with the naked eye.

A rather high end optical microscope will let you see down to about 1/10 um but it will be very fuzzy with a very shallow depth of field.
And that is on the order of maybe 1um or so. Which means that you can’t look at much of the vertical at any one setting. Sort of like being very near sighted and climbing up the side of a building. You can’t see very far either up or down, but what is close to you just fine.

And I would make the case that lots of the fallout we are dealing with is very submicron.
Which more than sucks. No getting away from it and it gets in to EVERYTHING!

I am near Portland and I am color blind.
Are you saying that the grey of the clouds is different than “normal”??
Everything looks classic PNW grey skies to me, and I have been looking at it for over 50 years now. It all looks quite normal to me, but I am not qualified to assess colors.

RE: Hot particles…I believe you are referring to this (12 June) video made by Arnie Gunderson (first one embedded on the webpage) telling why hot particles are important when considering the Japanese government’s new calculations:
    http://onlyinamericablogging.blogspot.com/2011/06/hot-particles-present-in-tokyo-west.html
    or at http://vimeo.com/25002205

(at time 2:10 to 3:15, he says) Geiger counter can’t detect hot particles and so air filters are used to count the number people probably absorb.
In April, Tokyo residents got 10 per day; Fukushima got 30-40 times more than in Tokyo; Seattle got 5 particles per day.
(3:15) what hot particles do to body tissue.
(4:40) Japan people reported getting a metallic taste in their mouths, providing anecdotal evidence that was the same at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

I remember getting THAT TASTE too,….in about 1963, 1965, 6 etc,…in Chicago, Ill, and Cleveland, Ohio. I used to think this (smell/taste) combo was something spiritual almost-like it snapped my head back and made me feel like I was standing in the Principal’s office. Very, VERY profound smell/taste. So much like the CONTRAST materials the Dr’s like to shove in my veins before a C/T. One in the same-ish. :-(

The hot particles all came out in the first blast and are expected in North America in one year’s time. However, the radioactive elements are still mostly contained and slowly leaking. Gamma rays are the third thing Arnie mentioned and I think that those came with the hot particles?

Oh dear, I’ve just found a paper about the geology written in English:

    https://ir.kochi-u.ac.jp/dspace/bits…/1/N022-04.pdf

The Taga Group and its Tomioka Formation are indeed Quarternary – Late Miocene/Early Pliocene. Much younger than I had assumed and so likely to be much softer and more wobbly in an earthquake.

    Deary me.
Great find! I’ve passed it on for comment. It’s from 1973 it seems, not long in geologic time for sure but maybe the region is better understood now.

Yes, but the professor is also saying:
I have talked with some of my colleagues (geology professors) today, and some of them knew for many years/decades that the bed rock of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuke Power Plant is soft sedimentary rock.
Why would he (they) be worried about geological issues if it would only concern some areas outside the plant area? It makes no sense.

I think it is this very mixture of siltstone/sandstone that they think is “soft”. And I think it is also this “soft” siltstone/sandstone that they believe is below the Daiichi plant.

Why would he (they) be worried about geological issues if it would only concern some areas outside the plant area? It makes no sense.

Right, to summarise, I think what we now know is that we have some soft, Quaternary, deposits, maybe fluvial or marine alluvium, to the north and south of the site. That would not be sensible to build anything very heavy upon.

The plant itself is built on the Tertiary Sandstone/siltston/mudstone complex known as the Tomioka Formation. It’s perhaps not ideal but was judged strong enough to support heavy buildings.

800 metres below is the granitic basement. This outcrops at the surface a few kilometres inland.

That granitic basement has a couple of major shear zones trending NNW-SSE a few km west of the plant.

And to speculate, rather than what we know, if those shear zones are potentially active (and the fact that there has not been a major earthquake on them for 400 years does not mean they aren’t potentially active) then building a nuke on Tertiary sediments a few km away might be judged, generously, as hoping for the best.

Areva sees no “nuclear winter” after Fukushima

***”Fundamentals are backing up nuclear,” she said, adding that despite the German and Italian decisions, more European countries continued to support nuclear power, citing Britain, Poland, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Beyond Europe, the United States, India, China and South Africa have also said they would go ahead with plans to develop more nuclear power projects.

“We are absolutely not in a situation of nuclear freeze.”

Lauvergeon said, she expected strong demand from Asia in particular, a region in which Areva expects half of the world’s new nuclear capacity to be built by 2025.***

    Hot Particles and Radiation Underestimates
Posted by: Dragonslayer on Earth News

Fairwinds – “Original estimates of xenon and krypton releases remain the same, but a TEPCO recalculation shows dramatic increases in the release of hot particles. This confirms the results of air filter monitoring by independent scientists. Fairewinds’ Arnie Gundersen explains how hot particles may react in mammals while escaping traditional detection. Reports of a metallic taste in the mouth, such as those now being reported in Japan and on the west coast, are a telltale sign of radiation exposure.”

Sorry for being the messenger of this very sad information. Tanuki dog is very sick. You can see him now on the Tepco cam in the foreground. Look at the bottom of the cam to the right where you’ll see the little ‘platform.’ Just in front of it and to the left, down to the ground, you’ll see a fuzzy whitish shadow which goes grey when the dog rolls over. It was on it’s back or side before, didn’t know what it was, then it tried to get up with paws in the air and fell back down. You can barely see him now but he’s there, if you watch a few minutes you may see his head pop up. If I’m wrong someone please whack me one! It’s almost worse for me seeing/thinking about the animals versus the humans suffering agonizing deaths from the radiation because at least you can tell the humans ‘hey, get the hell outta there!’ No one is going to hold Tanuki dog’s paw in his final moments. I pray all these animals don’t suffer long, maybe wishful thinking.

Soul? What soul? ‘Soul’ is a moot issue once the life force leaves 3D. Open your eyes, what you can’t see will hurt you. First the animals, then the humans at the top of the food chain. Life on earth is negatively affected by ionizing radiation, in massive or continuous small amounts. What happens to the dog is happening to the men in white suits that check the grounds around R1. The dog was fine until it rained. Starvation may have saved him until he needed to drink water.

Tanuki dog would be a great mascot/symbol for global nuclear energy production! When the dog dies, all nuclear energy reactors should be dismantled, while scientists figure out how to clean up the mess for the next thousand years.

You can see the dog jump up on the ‘Fuku1live’ link below. He was spotted on the 15:00-16:00 cam before this one, where he attempted to get up, then fell back. He’s pretty much staying there the entire time, even with the incoming rain in the following 17:00-18:00 cam.

Eh. Just one poor animal – when whole island is soon nuclear wasteland with its trillion dead radiating animal carcasses. Next the global genetic disater on all seas, air, forests, rivers…

Btw, humans are animals by your doctrine? Right?

Want to hear that this doctrine was first mentioned already in the Torah: “I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.”

The fucushima theater proves your animal theory – like the Torah: you are an animal.

Could there become any change – smtg which is greater, on another sphere than obummer AlGoreal “change”? Yes, check it out, the answer was also written in there – the answer has to come from outside this sleazy vat-i-can animal kingdom.
