El País Semanal (Spanish newspaper), May 2, 2016 (emphasis added): Fukushima: Contaminated lives… Spanish media investigates how the 2011 Japanese tsunami changed the course of the country’s history… the Fukushima nuclear plant started to leak radiation that seeped insidiously into the atmosphere, the soil and the Pacific Ocean… Mr Toru Anzai, 63, wanders around the house he abandoned five years ago [in] Litate… Two years ago, he had a heart attack and a stroke… in the hospital they found a hole in the frontal lobe of his brain that was producing paralysis down the left side of his body. The doctor said it could have been caused by absorbing cesium over a period of time… [After the reactor explosion on] March 14, he heard a thunderous noise… It didn’t take long for the wind to bring the penetrating smell of melted iron mixed with sulfur to Litate as a massive toxic cloud blew towards his home. In spite of the mayor of Litate’s assurance that there was no risk of radiation, Mr Anzai bought his first dosimeter on April 18… the radiation in the room where he and his brothers had been sleeping for the past month was at six microSieverts an hour – 20 times higher than the level stipulated by the government for relocating residents…
Xinhua, May 23, 2016: Five years on, Fukushima remains shrouded in untold stories… Some of them suffer from radioactive-related diseases, and some are seeking help but having nobody to turn to. [Since] the Chernobyl nuclear disaster… various investigations and commemorations have never ceased… Yet on the Fukushima nuclear disaster, probes have always been wrapped in an ominous cloak for the past five years… However, concealing the truth will not lead people’s memory to oblivion, but arouse anger… One focal point is the local children’s poor health, especially thyroid cancer… The International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, a global organization, sent a message to the Japanese government this January expressing worry over the high incidence of thyroid cancer…
Xinhua, May 23, 2016: A 2015 research found that children living near the Fukushima nuclear facilities are significantly up to 50 times more likely to develop thyroid cancer compared to those children living elsewhere in Japan. Data on radiation levels collected by Japanese volunteers near the Daiichi nuclear power plant is 8 to 10 times higher than the official number… Questions over the Fukushima aftermath have never ceased to pop up… Japan is concerned with its national image, food security, tourism, nuclear policy, medical compensation and possibility of public lawsuits… [none] of them should be the country’s excuse for preventing the post-disaster situation from being known to the public…
Xinhua, May 23, 2016: Children near Fukushima more likely to suffer from thyroid cancer… More than 160 teenagers in Fukushima Prefecture had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, including suspect cases… The Fukushima prefectural government doubted the cases were related to the nuclear disaster… Some nuclear experts were surprised by the Japanese government’s irresponsible and indifferent attitude.
Xinhua, May 23, 2016: Truths deliberately covered about Fukushima surface over five years — Facts about the Fukushima nuclear disaster… kept emerging over the past five years after the mishap took place, revealing the real face of the disaster. In front of the local government of Iidate Village in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture [a device reads] 0.38 microsieverts/hour… However, volunteer Yoichi Tao who majored in physics said the figure of radiation on their own device is 8 to 10 times of the official one. According to Tao, the government dispatched the military to wipe out the nearby nuclear radiation on the ground in advance, so the official figure looks very low. “That’s how the government did it,” he said…
Xinhua, May 24, 2016: The improper handling of the Fukushima aftermath by the Japanese government has had grave consequences… a Russian radiation expert has said… Japan followed the suit of the former Soviet Union in playing down the disastrous consequences, said Valery Stepanenko, a leading specialist in medical and environmental dosimetry and radiation safety… the Japanese government attempted to hide the truth… After the disaster, lies and contradictive information emerged, making it impossible to decide the level of exposure… ”data of internal exposure were still left out,” he said… The consequence is dire… more than 160 teenagers in Fukushima Prefecture have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, including suspect cases…

Before I was born …
“The element of surprise which could delay the discovery of the great danger, and thus allow more plutonium piles to come into existence, is the fact that scientists are looking near the ground for fallout dangers. The greatest radioactive dangers are accumulating from eight to twelve miles up in the stratosphere. The upper atmosphere is already charged with death-dealing radioactivity, for which it has not yet sent us the bill. It is slowly coming and we will have to pay for it in another century, even if atomic energy plants ceased today.”

That should be TATALly obvious by now.

No news in over a week. Dare we hope nothing else has blown up, leaked or melted down? The strong earthquake in Japan a while ago keeps surfacing in my mind. As does the leaking radiation from the nuclear power plant outside of NYC, which is near me. I volunteer at a food bank in town…and they suddenly have this huge quantity of tuna fish from China. It's in black cans and the people who come for food skip over it and leave it on the shelf. So the people running the food bank decided they won't put any other kind out on the shelves until it's all gone. Is it evil or stupidity? You decide.

When we talk about poisoning the Pacific it becomes, shall we say, somewhat personal for moi.
I know where I was conceived…the North Shore.
Yet we had already detonated bombs into the atmosphere and my mother ran a fever while pregnant with me. The docs called it scarlet fever (not Zika) and nobody discussed, you know, THE BOMBS.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as tragic as they were, in a sense were puny compared to many that followed.
Those detonations didn't just fade into the void, rather they continue to hasten our own demise into the void.
Atmospheric chemistry when altered changes how thermal dynamics work and new stress lines build up in the jetstreams.
Rainfall patterns are affected by countless factors, not just dust from the Sahara, etc.
Now forget the atmosphere…go marine.
Egits.

When you alter the biological matrix of the marine environment, all manner of detrimental changes kick in.
Example: Poison top 6" of sea surface. Solar energy no longer is trapped by organisms to buffer the temperature gradient, hence the water column heats up.
UV rays can do that as well so it makes no sense to destroy the ozone layer with chloroflouro-carbons, jet kerosene, etc.
A twofer so to speak.
Carbon dioxide is NOT the problem.
Our stupidity and arrogance is.

Since we live close to North Anna Nuclear Plant.this is the FIRST I have heard about a possible dangerous event there:
"In the North Anna nuclear reactor in Virginia, one of the baffles became slightly loose – though the bolts proved to be sound – and the pressurized coolant shot through the gap in an intense, cold water jet and damaged two 12-foot-long fuel rods. The water jet forced the rods to spin, and the zirconium cladding burst, sending 15 radioactive uranium fuel pellets careening throughout the reactor ( http://bit.ly/1XTuCBR ). Actual core damage can be a precursor to a meltdown since the loose fuel cannot be controlled and roaming metal parts can block the cooling system for other fuel assemblies. "
What was the plan to WARN and evacuate citizens BEFORE they, the humans, got damaged? Right now I understand it is the county governments responsiblity to provide Iodine tablets for victims..before thyroid damages. Anyone want to guess if the 'county' government health departments even knows they have to have enough immediately for everyone? Are the tablets expired? They were in one area when a 5.0 earthquake occurred, damaging the plant a few years ago. And then there is Surry Nuclear Plant..just nine miles away..also a 'close friend." If they have an accident..I hope winds are from the South and West! Look at a map…

Happened around Sept 15, 2014..report made Sept 30th 2014. So what could go wrong with a slightly delayed report? HUMMMM?? Now if they had to HOLD THEIR BREATH between went the event occurred and report was sent, now that would be useful!

"The direct cause of the event was due to baffle jetting. Baffle jetting is the process by
which water on the outside of the core baffle plate is forced through small openings in
the baffle seams and onto the fuel assemblies. During Unit 2 Cycle 23, baffle jetting
caused two rods in assembly 4Z9, located in core position B11, to begin rotating and
vibrating. This movement resulted in fuel rod wear and eventual mechanical failure and
rod separation. Once separated, a maximum of 15 fuel pellets were released from the
two affected fuel rods. The Root Cause of the failed fuel assembly was the change in
material properties of the baffle plates and bolting due to aging mechanisms resulting in
the gap widening at the baffle joint. Stress, temperature, and irradiation since initial plant
start-up have resulted in relaxation, creep, and loss of pre-load in the bolting and baffle
plates. The changes in material properties allowed the gap in the corner baffle joint"

“The most dangerous place on the planet”:
Fear of hyperflooding and nuclear hazard on Dnieper River, Ukraine
April 05, 2012
“…The dam also receives particular scrutiny because the Kyiv Reservoir contains sediments contaminated with radionuclides from the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown of 1986. The defunct plant is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the dam, and a river that flows near it drains directly into the Kyiv Reservoir….”

http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/data/uploads/2012/04/DnieperRiver_Chernobyl_Map.png
“Moreover, it contains additional major threat – after the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in 1986, radionuclides washed away by rains badly contaminated the bottom silt of the reservoir. During the years following the disaster, there were suggestions to drain the reservoir because it was too shallow. It appeared that, if done, this could have created the threat of the tremendous amounts of radioactive dust travelling by wind, lethally affecting Europe….
” First of all, a release of each but the southernmost reservoir would damage several top-hazard nuclear sites in the Dnieper basin, as explained below. Subsequently, the whole Black Sea area would be radioactively contaminated to a significant extent. This would cause a Europe-wide nuclear disaster by means of large-distance air and water circulation.
Report comment
The cities of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, standing on the Dnieper, contain dozens of hazardous industrial sites, mostly toxic wastes dumps, which may be destroyed not only by hyperflooding but also by weather extremes due to their poor protection.
“The most dangerous among those sites are the radioactive dumps in the riverbank city of Dniprodzerzhynsk. The now-defunct Prydniprovsky Chemical Plant (PHZ) has been enriching uranium ores for Soviet nuclear program from 1948 till 1991, preparing the so-called Yellowcake substance. Its processing wastes are now stored in 9 open-air dumping grounds containing about 36 million tones of sand-like low-radioactive material, occupying area of 2,5 million square meters. The sites, improperly constructed from the very beginning, have been abandoned by industry long ago and remain in very poor condition. The top concern is the dumps’ closeness to both the Dnieper River and city residential areas….”
http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/data/uploads/2012/04/cheruno-cesium-kiev-reservoir.jpg
“According to government experts, the dams separating the grounds from soil water are already leaking, causing the pollution of Dnieper basin. It is believed that further deterioration of the dams in itself may cause a devastating radioactive mudslide….
“Ukraine’s uranium ore mines (which products have been enriched by PHZ) are also situated in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in proximity of the Dnieper and its tributaries, particularly in the town of Zhovti Vody.

“The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is also situated within miles from the Dnieper, in the left-bank city of Enerhodar. In case of a hyperflooding, hazardous materials from these and many other industrial sites may be poured on surrounding territories and the Black Sea. On May 30, 2006 researcher Vasily Kredo alerted the nation again, calling the Kiev Reservoir “the most dangerous place on the planet”. The researcher says there is a remote possibility of a ‘radioactive tsunami from the Kiev Sea’ that would kill 15 million and make Ukraine ‘never revive again’.”

The Dnieper River Aquatic System Radioactive Contamination; Long-tern Natural Attenuation And Remediation History
There are different aspects of radionuclide transport in the environment were studied since the Chernobyl fallout in 1986 covered the river catchments, wetlands, river, lakes/reservoirs and reached the Black Sea. The monitoring time series data set and also data on the radionuclides behavior studies in the water bodies (river, lakes and the Black Sea) are available now in Ukraine and other affected countries. Its causation analyses, considering the main geochemical, physical and chemical and hydrological process, governing by radionuclide mobility and transport on the way from the initially contaminated catchments, through the river-reservoir hydrological system to the Black Sea can help in better understanding of the main factors governing be the radionuclide behavior in the environment. Radionuclide washout and its hydrological transport are determined speciation of radionuclides as well as soil types and hydrological mode and also geochemistry and landscape conditions at the affected areas. Mobility and bioavailability of radionuclides are determined by ratio of radionuclide chemical forms in fallout and site-specific environmental characteristics determining rates of leaching, fixation/remobilization as well as sorption-desorption of mobile fraction (its solid-liquid distribution).
Report comment
In many cases the natural attenuation processes governing by the above mentioned processes supported by water flow transportation and sedimentation played the key role in self-rehabilitation of the aquatic ecosystems. The models developed during post-Chernobyl decade and process parameters studies can help in monitoring and remediation programs planed for Fukusima Daichi affected watersheds areas as well. Some most important monitoring data collection results and experience gained during post-Chernobyl decades at the Dnieper River aquatic system are presented (catchments, river and reservoirs). This experience show that only information on radionuclide deposition levels is not enough for accurate predictions on radionuclide wash-out and transport in the hydrological systems. Data on speciation in fallout, rates of transformation processes and site-specific environmental characteristics determining these rates are needed….”
