Document: 1600 Fukushima Workers Thought to Be Exposed to High Radiation, Time.com by Krista Mahr, July 27, 2011:

A newly released document says the Japanese government estimated in April that some 1600 workers will be exposed to high levels of radiation in the course of handling the reactor meltdowns at the stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

The figure was released in a document from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) [...] according an article published on Thursday in the Mainichi Daily News.

The government defines high exposure levels for workers as over 50 millisieverts per year. [...]

So the number will be 10x to 10000x larger

What about the previous 6,000 outside workers they maxed out over the years by contracting them to work in this plant. Would be interesting to do a follow-up study on those folks. Just trying to establish some metrics here so we all can gauge the “cost”-effectiveness of nuclear power.

I would say anyone that was/is in Fukushima was/is exposed to very high radiation, that includes animals/bugs, even birds that fly.

50 millisieverts per year is less than what a lot of people outside the evacuation zone are exposed to.

Admit to the lesser crime to distract from the greater….

  • People in Pierre South Dakota are being exposed to high radiation right now (10:28 pacific time):

204 beta! That has got to be 20 times background.

It looks like it is from the jet stream

Most of that jet stream is hitting Canada and driving down the temperatures from that nast heat wave we had last week. Thank you, jet stream.
Unfortunately ‘internal’ temperatures are about to rise. Guess I should just go out and have a good time while I can still move.

And I will wager that most of the residents of Pierre, S.D. know nothing of this thanks to our trusty government.

Beginning to think the story about HAARP being used to create the dome of high pressure, to keep the jet stream from depositing fallout over the mainland US, may be true.

      • where did you read that story about haarp being used in this fashion?

Is the jet stream usually this far north during summer months?

I wish I knew its annual patterns better.

It was much lower in the spring and we in AZ got lots and lots of radiation contamination.

We have been spared since June now when the current moved north.

I am worried about the northern states and Canada though because Fukushima must be really spewing ALOT to make such high levels in the Dakotas

I posted a comment at Time.com after reading those last two paragraphs. In case my comment gets purged:

    Repost:

Gamma radiation is not the problem for humans at the edge of the plant. The radionuclides are a problem. Stand there long enough and you have an extremely high chance of breathing in a dangerous DNA-bursting particle into your lungs…like plutonium. Lung cancer may develop from the star bursts of plutonium embedded in your lungs (and it can’t be removed by surgical or chemical methods). The use of deadly MOX fuel at reactor 3 made the longterm contamination vastly more dangerous to people.

    1600 is the new 50.

  • They knew the numbers, this was no accident !

This article is another dumbing down, or at least minimization distraction piece. I’m CERTAIN that far more than 1600 TEPCO workers so far have already been exposed to far more than 50mSv/yr! I would guess that even at the low employment levels, though who has any numbers on just how many have been employed, sickened and killed already by working there, that far more than 1600 have been exposed to far higher than 1Sv/hr levels, particularly when we begin to look at those ridiculous photos, such as the one showing a worker standing near the 10Sv/hr emissions sources! True we don’t know the time each worker has stood where; but it would be nice if we had some really brazen whistle blowers among those who had worked there to give us even more testimony than we’ve already had.
