UNUSUAL EVENT DUE TO FIRE ON AUXILIARY TRANSFORMER INSIDE PROTECTED THE AREA

At 1743 CDT on 05/12/13, Grand Gulf Nuclear Station declared an Unusual Event due to a fire lasting greater than 15 minutes in an auxiliary transformer inside the Protected Area (PA). The transformer was isolated. The plant continues to operate at 100% power. The license remains in a Unusual Event pending further investigation.

The licensee notified the NRC Resident Inspector and State and Local Authorities.

Notified DHS SWO, FEMA, and DHS NICC.

* * * UPDATE FROM ROBERT BRINKMAN TO JOHN SHOEMAKER AT 2112 EDT ON 5/12/13 * * *

The Licensee terminated the Unusual Event at 1921 CDT on 5/12/13 based on electrically isolating the auxiliary transformer and termination of smoke coming from the transformer. At no time were flames seen during this event. The transformer is located outside of the turbine building [...]

    Well that's about 2 hours north of my location… Fun stuff! Every time I see one of these stories I click to see where and I always expect to see the worst (for me it would be River Bend)

    h.Pilgrim Nuclear Plant forced to shut down

    If this were an auto manufacturer or meat processing plant with all these problems, both would have been shuttered YEARS AGO and the guilty parties all put in Jail.

    Nope
    Is the event "over" Boss? If so im gonna go outside and have a smoke. Ill let you know if i see any flames.
    Dont bother, the "event" is over so if you see flames its just your tobacco hallucinations again.

    A FIRE with NO FLAMES! It burned for over 30 minutes somehow without flames! Truly amazing! Magical. Glorious miracle of the universe!

    I rode in, and managed to grab some gc readings before security chased me out….

    It was hot but my tepco-made dosimeter said there was no immediate danger to me or to the public and it also said there was not any cause for public concern. Whew low readings i feel great
