Title: Kyle Thiermann explores South African nuclear plant controversy
Source: ESPN
Author: Jeff DiNunzio
Date: Feb 14, 2012
Kyle Thiermann — pro surfer, environmental activist, and creator of the website and film series “Surfing For Change” — recently released his latest project: an eight-minute short highlighting the debate over a proposal to build a nuclear power plant in Thyspunt, South Africa, roughly 25 miles southwest of the legendary point break Jeffrey’s Bay. Closer still sits Cape St. Francis, the wave first lionized in 1966 in “The Endless Summer.” [...]
Concerns over the safety of nuclear energy and its environmental hazards have not subsided, especially in light of the Fukushima Daiichi plant meltdown [...]
Locals held demonstrations during the 2010 and 2011 Billabong Pro Jeffrey’s Bay events in opposition to the Thyspunt plant, and top ASP riders attended in support, including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow, the late Andy Irons and Jordy Smith, who is from nearby Durban. [...]

Good for the surfers, but I fear their cause will be picked up by msm as an excuse to trivialize the issues. I can see the headlines now "Surfers Say NIMBY to Nuclear Renaissance".
With fronds like that, who needs anemones? (Something like that)
SHUT THEM ALL DOWN

From the article Whoopie linked called
"FRENCH NUCLEAR ANXIETIES SOAR AFTER FUKUSHIMA"
"At least one French politician is tone deaf to IRSN's findings — President Nicholas Sarkozy, who is running for a second term. Now rated France's most unpopular president [...]"
"In contrast [Francois] Hollande has pledged to close down Fessenheim and reduce French nuclear dependence to 50 percent if he's elected president."
Sounds like France has a clear choice:
1. Vote for someone who isn't listening to the concerns of the people (Sarkozy)
2. Vote for someone who is (Hollande)

I think it will "reach" a new group of younger people that will "Get It"
… They have the most to lose by continuing to accept the Nuclear Risk!

Don't underestimate surfers, there are millions of them and they're passionate about protecting their surf spots and the ocean. The surf industry is also a multi billion dollar industry that can and will help organization such as surfrider wage their lawsuits.
Point in case, when the legendary surf spot of Mundaka in Spain stopped producing world class waves due to sand dredging by concrete companies, the surf industry, in this case Billabong, sued and won purely on the principle that the surf economy and surf tourism is more important to the long term prosperity of the region.

I am impressed with the presentation & that video showed they do get it. I agree jonjon that this will help more young people *see the light.
Awesome that they fought & won, how cool is that? That win will also give them & others new to this confidence that this cause is indeed worth fighting.

Thanks aig, inspiration -
Article in Joberg newspaper:
"Foreign anti-nuke surfers
say keep S.A. dark!
Say can't surf off Japan
without leaving sparks!
Say boards getting covered
with sticky black goo!
Say seeing big numbers
of dead floating sharks!"
South African surfers know
we've sharks aplenty,
and when jellyfish swarm
we leave the waves empty,
and as for black goo
that's off the coast
of Gabon and Nigeria.
This anti-nuke stance
is just foreign hysteria.
We're not Japan,
Fukushima is cold,
stop ruining Tourism,
our plans are bold,
self-sufficiency building,
nukes are "New Gold!"
we'll be energy rich,
with nuclear gilding!
Expect something like that from South African papers, especially the business rags backing nuke-rapers.

Oh Yeah,…or-well,…spot on, per usual.
If they have gotten a taste of the (drug) Gold, $, power,….etc,….they will be doing just as you say.

Hits all the main points in less than 8 minutes!
Would love to see this shown before every movie at movie theaters.

Agree Mack. and all in simple terms.
Basically a True/False choice, A or B, Black or White.
Life or Death.

I'm glad this guy is trying to wake young people up to this issue. I wish the quotes he used to support his appeal came from different people, however–ideally people with actual scientific credentials. By bringing in Van Jones as an authority on this issue, the video is only going to confirm the common, but misguided prejudice on the political right that opposition to nuclear is a left-wing/extremist-type cause. It's NOT…
Conservatives, Republicans, and Libertarians need to wake up to the fact that supporting the nuclear industry is not consistent with the ideals they claim to hold:
-Conservatives care about family, yet nuclear plants routinely spew "effluent" laced with tritium and other radionuclides that is increasingly being found to correlate with increases in childhood cancers/leukemias in vicinity.
-Conservatives care about what we will pass on to future generations, but nuclear generates extremely long-lived and dangerous waste that will continue to burden future generations (particularly since after 50 years we still have no viable solution for dealing with it).
-Republicans support national security, yet nuclear plants and especially the spent fuel pools around them (which lack reinforced containments) represent very vulnerable targets for determined terrorists.
-Republicans and Libertarians support small government and little interference in the economy, yet nuclear depends on huge government subsidies and could not sustain itself in a truly free market.
The truly conservative choice is to reject nuclear power and invest in better, safer, cleaner alternatives.

Actually, to be precise that should say "seem to confirm."
Must proofread more carefully next time…
