Title: Increased Seismic Activity Reported
Source: Assumption Parish Police Jury
Date: March 13, 2013 at 12:55p ET
h/t Anonymous tip
Dr. Horton has reported a “spasmodic burst” which occurred at 1:34 this morning with 90+ micro earthquakes happening overnight. In addition, there were several observable long periods (VLP) events recorded on seismic monitor LA12. Dr. Horton and Dr. Pettit are working to locate the events currently.
We will post updates as information becomes available.
Updated here: Official: Work halted around giant sinkhole -- Sharp tremors continuing every 15 minutes -- Gas or fluids moving below ground?

For anyone trying to relate the sinkhole activity to 'burps', I can only suggest you picked the wrong end of the digestive tract for illustration.
Please don't change on my account, though. Seriously -don't.

How is that better than calling releases of deadly radiation "leaks"? The language is deliberately minimizing.

So is a spasmodic burst the new terminology for a burp?

Hell ya! Again I say that it has been a hell of a sudden turn around as soon as more attention was directed towards Bayou Corne. I hope the people involved can hold a little bit longer, until they can watch from a safe distance. Many "outsiders" are pulling for you!

Unfortunately, this is only a beginning and will take a long time to accomplish.. Now we have to ramp it up as well for Pierre Part, because they are experiencing the same things Bayou Corne did in the beginning.
That said, anytime you see Louisiana erect a Blue Ribbon Commission, then you know nothing will be done in a timely manner.
Unreal…

I had been searching for a map with the location of the new TB monitors location on it..gave up a while ago.. here it is if anybody else had been looking

I'm going to take a 'told ya so' on this one.

The two helicorder graphs above are the 2 wells directly south of oxy3 that has already collapsed. These too shall follow soon. Then the subseidence will continue west to the other caverns. Total dome/cavern failure imminent there.

New radiological testing needs to be done ASAP for radioactive isotopes present in sinkhole after the newest SPASMODIC BURST. Hell of a name for a burp lol. NORM and TNORM levels need to be checked. NOW.
Report Comment
a spasmodic burst is when, thinking you are going to burp, you let it fly and end up with a mouthful of beer and half-digested schnitzel.
soon to be followed by a "mass spasmodic ejection"

Do you think 23 miles to the south of Bayou Corne is safe? Thanks in advance.

No moon. It hasn't been in a while… toxic chems and radioactive salts flowed freely for five weeks during the floods down there… and these berms will never hold when the Spring Rains set in…Lake Verret is a scary place to be right now…

With the ground moving, it can mean only one thing. The salt dome is being eroded.
Water running down the sinkhole which created a hole in the aquifer containment layer is dissolving the salt. As the salt erodes, the sediment in contact with the salt moves to fill the void left from the salt dissolving.
The salt dome when forming pushed up from below through the sediments. At the edges of the salt and sediments it would look like this
sediment//salt. As the salt erodes it now looks like this
sediment/–salt. The sediment is moving into where the salt was.
Huge water filled voids are being created. Any sediments above or to the sides of these voids will move into the voids.
As the salt continues to erode/dissolve more sediments will move to fill the voids until it reaches a point where the salt no longer is eroding.

It takes 3 bbls of fresh water to dissolve 1 bbl of salt— once it dissolve the 1 bbl of salt there is over 3 bbls of that can dissolve no more salt.
OK- where is all the fresh water coming from– and once it becomes brine where does it go—?

SwimsWithGators,
So true, it looks like the dome is being dissolved from the information at hand. To what extent? At what pace? That is what all the scientists are looking to answer. If there wasn't a problem they would probably be on here telling you it wasn't eroding.
The fact is, as the salt dissolves, a void is left. 3 volumes of water dissolve 1 volume of salt (insert whatever volume you like). The salty brine is not equal to the total volume of the salt and water. That equation will change with the salinity of the water source, so formation water that already contains salt ions will not erode the salt as quickly, but will have the same effect, a reduced volume and a void to be filled by something. My guess is that if any water source found it's way in to contact with the formation it would likely draw more water from the source until the situation changed enough to allow some other substance to fill the void. That is also a good possibility for how this all started. I don't think anyone can argue that gravity was in fact part of the cause of this collapse, but gravity didn't make the decision to solution mine these caverns. T.B. did.
Think about the Lake Peigneur collapse. It sucked in way more water than it would have taken to just fill the mine shafts. that is because once the salt begins to dissolve there is a reduction in the volume. If that were not the case the volume of the mine shafts was met it would have stopped. Did it? I think not.

There is 1 volume of salt and you add 3 volumes of water. Where does that 3 volumes of water go??– even when the 1 volume of salt is dissolved there is still 3.36 volume of brine to occupy that 1 volume space
Went back and reseached Lake Peigneur — was unable to find a stated volume for the lake or the Diamond Crystal Salt mine if you have pls share. When the 1 volume of salt was dissolved the void volume remaiming would be 0.64…
Report Comment
SwimsWithGators,
would you agree with this?
1 Volume of salt + 3 volumes of water = 4 volumes total
salt and water mix
3.36 volumes brine + .64 volumes void = 4 volumes total
That's the last stop. Everyone off the bus.

IT would be putting 3.36 volume in the 1 volume void that was just created–

The salt eroding..is only part of the problem..faulting..micro-cracking.. fracturing .etc..have to be added to the mix.
"For salt storage caverns in close proximity to the edge of salt, an accurate assessment
of the edge of salt is critical for prudent and efficient cavern operation. It should be noted that
the edge of salt does not necessarily correspond with the limits of “good quality salt” as salt
quality tends to degrade toward the peripheral edge of a salt structure"

Excellent research on the salt dome edge science there Heart of the Rose. Did you see on page 12 and 13 where it clearly says that borehole seismic must be performed before cavern is to be developed? Wonder if Texas Brine skipped this step? Be interesting to find out.
