I guess this is slightly assuring news? However its just a scratch on the surface of what needs to be done.

So, Good News..now about that Sinkhole in Louisiana..and hey..the BP Oil Spill, they are all good areas to turn the FBI loose on if regulations are not followed. Especially if they are purposely falsified reports.

    Victory dance!

Congrats to Friends of the Earth and Fairewinds and SoCal antinukes! Pop that champagne and celebrate your dedicated and hard work in an uphill battle against the Goliath.

Thank you so much Senator Boxer and Rep Markey for your consideration!

Many steps still to go but a big cheers from me … I can almost hear the party from here.

Many thanks for your fight and prayers for continued success. Sincerely. All Californians are fortunate tonight because of you all.

  • razzz razzz

Of course I don't like this when Congress asks a government agency to investigate itself because basically that is what is happening. A special independent investigator or prosecutor needs to be appointed for a proper investigation.

You would think a major new piece of nuclear equipment failing within a year or so (at public peril) that was meant to last decades would warrant more attention.

    Better than nothing I guess.

  • NoNukes NoNukes

The NRC usually leads the way out of complying with legal obligations, so it sounds like the mobster boss is checking to see if his flunky is following the law, and will make some cement boots if he is following the law.

Double dare you to report me for celebrating the hard work of these antinuke folks. Better yet, I will report myself.

Dear Admin … please put me into moderation because …

Umm … this is good news … great news for some very hard working antinuke activists. And that the Senator and Representative listened to their cause.

And great news for my home state that a very unsafe condition in a NPP has reached a higher level to be addressed.

That a grass roots effort has successfully stalled and exposed the scandal of the power company.

          And I dunno what else.

But surely my celebration deserves punishment for some reason. 🙂

          • It's just that you're being repetitive with your Buzz kill thing kez.

No offense, and we're not trying to curb your exuberance, but who the heck is Buzz kill? (Hint: I don't want to know).

Anyway, I guess it takes a few posts to get used to how things work, and three cheers for your other comments.

Wow … this forum will really let this thread die tonight without any of cheers for a victory by the antinukes except mine. And so hang me by my heels … I like Boxer. She's scrappy and fearless when fired up. But actually I already said that.

Wow … this even shocks seeking middle me. Reading this headline tonight brought tears to my eyes. I was celebrating. And no other Ene user … none … to share it with.

So I guess I missed the Kool Aid memo …

Antinuke here means we assume the position … nothing can be done … we sit and bitch here until we die. We do nothing else. We neither promote nor celebrate activism.

And celebrating a major antinuke victory is a reportable offense here on ENE.

    Sorry … f that shit.

Press that report button on me (buzzzzz … so scared) …

Congrats again Arnie FOE. Thanks Barbara and Ed.

    • Huuwah!!!! another win on the chopping block, 102 left, we can kill 30 in the next year and then legislate the phase out plan for the rest.

      What a victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Dr. Anne Lee Tomlinson Maziar anne

The only celebration is if all nuclear power plants are decommissioned forever and no new one built. Yet what we have is:
" Our nuclear safety officials should now postpone any decision on the re-start of the reactors until this critical investigation is complete.”

And why celebrate with someone who is "middle of the road" and who keeps criticizing other anti-nukers and thus tries to get rid of the anti-nuke movement?

      • Time Is Short Time Is Short

"Our nuclear safety officials should now postpone any decision on the re-start of the reactors until this critical investigation is complete.”

Exactly, anne. This is the scam. The ratepayers have always paid an extra fee for supporting San Onofre. The contract says that the fee will stop if the plant doesn't provide power after a 9 month stretch. We are waay past that. However, as long as there are 'further' investigations, the fee will continue to be collected from ratepayers. This fee brings in millions and millions of dollars, and Edison doesn't want it to stop, otherwise the bondholders might take a hit.

Now, with this new 'Federal' investigation, the fee will continue to be collected to infinity. This whole thing is a scam to fleece millions of ratepayers out of tens of millions of dollars. This can all be confirmed with Fairewinds.

The whole point is to protect the bondholders, and not set precedent for other NPP's.

kez, take your troll BS elsewhere. You clearly don't give a damn about the millions of ratepayers getting screwed in this deal.

      • kez

Hi Anne … middle of the road yes … trying to find a balance where solutions actually work in compromise.

Just as our Founding Fathers had to do in drafting the rules.

Even when I might have a personal bias.

        Step by step.

And even if I wrangle you do have your own POV of course to be considered.

You do understand that odds are huge at this time that you will be long dead before you see all NPPs decomssioned and cleaned up don't you. I will be too. Unless we've got some teens here writing … nearly all of us will be.

We are talking mostly about leaving a legacy.

Taking an extremist stance IMO only stalls and negates the greater good.

And sorry … don't you already believe this is already plotted and planned and orchestrated by the Illuminati you have oft posted about?

Since you believe that … honestly … why rail against me so heavily?

How could lil ole me undermine such already grand and dark and NWO and plots such as those you profess are out there?

Am I some sort of hero that could actually bring about the demise of such entrenched conspiracy theories? Or isn't it actually already ordained to be true?

        🙂 … how's Bigfoot BTW?

Celebrating each step albeit small works towards the greater good.

      • Jebus Jebus

"Celebrating each step albeit small works towards the greater good."

No it doesn't, it makes you look like a fool who doesn't understand the cause or the distance that needs to be traveled..

We all know that this is a movement, a marathon, not a sprint.
Yes, it's a given that we ALL will be dust before the result is obtained.
One small turn in events is no cause for celebration when there is so far to go.
Those who bring information to the table, good, bad, or ugly, allow others to digest that same information and develop their own opinions. Those who do that are doing their part the best they can. They have lives to live. They have the cause in their heart.

Those who post just for their ego madness, bring nothing to the table here at enenews.

Those who never work for or search out the details, do not have this cause in their heart.

So if you have this cause in your heart, try to bring something to the table for others to consume and that will be something you can give to this Anti-Nuclear movement and allow the momentum to accelerate. Then someday in the future, your great, great, grandchildren will have something to party about…

        • kez

Dude … great and mighty intellilect Jebus …

I posted a timline not unsimilar to yours on the last SONGS thread. And participated as one of the only info on topic writers on the Arnie and the bobble head thread.

So if this is just a link competition … I don't care who wins.

It ultimately contributes to the common good. (Unless as we have previously discussed we have to weed thru the tin hat Illuminati shit …)

Thanks for providing us all further info.

And otherwise your panties are bunched up in a rant against me are what again ???

We can't celebrate that one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind here why??

Because you posted more links than I have or what?

          Name the beef.

Otherwise it seems we agree …

          • Jebus Jebus

Sorry for you, Kez, if you can't see your approach and abrasiveness in most of your posts. I really do think you are more intelligent than filling up a thread with your approval or displeasure of each post. I don't see your thumbs up/down as any different than the "tin hat illuminati shit", except yours just feeds one…

              Have a thought here.

Abrasive … or just that I disagreed and/or didn't bend over?

Ummm … **hahaha I rest my case** which should sound familiar to you eh?

              Take care.

              • Jebus Jebus

Sure show me a link where I specifically called you, by any name, an idiot.
For your own reasons, you just thought I did…

Just up to other stuff. You can look back at my posts, I usually start typing out the nuclear version of 99 bottles of beer. Also, I have used the worn out: Dunh duhn duhn . . . Another one bites the dust!

Still looking for another good one for tonight.

I think that the level headed ones here at Enenews realize that this is just an investigation into the "facts". The outcome of that investigation will be the win or loss…

The beast is still there, and they are investigating whether or not to clip one of his toenails. The beast doesn't like his toenails clipped. Let's see if we end up just painting the toenails, on the taxpayers dime…

I'm waiting to see if Boxer is going to be the cigarette girl for the NRC.. BS high dollar fix… of San Onofre.

    • tarpus

Boxer will do anything for a dollar. So will 99% of these corrupt vermin. Hey kez, no offense but I'll celebrate when the last nuke plant has been shut down and all corrupt politicians have been "dealt" with. Until then, I celebrate the fact that you can't pull the wool over the ENEWS crowd, me especially.

      • Time Is Short Time Is Short

Markey has taken campaign money from firms linked with nuclear power:

        Covington & Burling
        DLA Piper
        Interpublic Group

        And Boxer, same:

        University of California
        Stanford University

And both of them are union supported. All the nuclear plants are union. They're all dirty.

What caused the destruction of San Onofre’s new replacement steam generators? https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zE308t7F8iyY0yy_hIn_azEenQ-WpsBeFQyUfo-iSJw/edit

Thanks CaptD for the link highlighted below. (people here @enenews are the best at keeping current). Even though the document is technical, like explaining or describing a water bubble in scientific terms, it explains the problems of SONGS RSGs. Has a useful ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS list, too.

The DAB Safety Team: February 6, 2013
What caused the destruction of San Onofre’s new replacement steam generators?

At the bottom is the 'about' and mission statement…

"The DAB Safety Team: Don, Ace and a BATTERY of safety-conscious San Onofre insiders plus industry experts from around the world who wish to remain anonymous. These volunteers assist the DAB Safety Team by sharing knowledge, opinions and insight but are not responsible for the contents of the DAB Safety Team's reports. We continue to work together as a Safety Team to prepare additional DAB Safety Team Documents, which explain in detail why a SONGS restart is unsafe at any power level without a Full/Thorough/Transparent NRC 50.90 License Amendment and Evidentiary Public Hearings. For more information from The DAB Safety Team, please visit the link above.

        Happy to help!

The more all of US know the worse the idea of a restart at SanO's is, considering its current condition.

The Anti-Vibration Bar Design Team at San Onofre…

It was the whole team of engineers, who supposedly checked and rechecked a billion-dollar faulty steam generator design.

Further down read the latest that they tried to hide…

  • Jebus Jebus

Before leak, San Onofre owner formed 'anti-vibration' team that found risks, then rejected fixes — Markey

At least two years before a leak inside a generator shuttered the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in California, the owner of the plant acknowledged that the equipment could vibrate, threatening tubes that carry radioactive fluid, a document given to regulators shows.

Southern California Edison (SCE) initially addressed the concern, forming the "Anti-Vibration Bar Design Team," said a person familiar with that document. The group included individuals from both SCE and generator maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

After "numerous technical and design review meetings," the document said, the team "concluded that the steam generator tube design could lead to the tubes vibrating and subsequent wear damage caused by higher amounts of steam," said Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee.

The companies then made a risky decision, Markey said.

"The team then 'considered making changes to the design' to mitigate the problems, but decided not to implement any of them," Markey said, quoting the document from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. "The only specific reason cited in this document for the decision not to implement the potential design modifications was the desire to avoid a more lengthy license amendment process at the [Nuclear Regulatory Commission]," he said yesterday via email.

"Initiative Would Shutter California Nuclear Plants For Decades While Feds Ponder Waste"

"California Secretary of State Debra Bowen cleared an initiative Wednesday that would shut down California’s two existing nuclear power plants until the federal government figures out what to do with the used fuel—a process expected to take at least 35 Years."

      Great post … thanks.

    • Heart of the Rose Heart of the Rose

      Now.. THIS is something.
The 'waste"..well.. at least..they wouldn't be producing more.
The braintards in the nuke industry..didn't calculate exactly how to deal with permanent storage in an impermanent environment.

  • CaptD CaptD

So just to recap what is going on at SanO:
    1. Edison told the CA Public Utilities Comm. (their Regulators), that their new generators would last 18+ years and would save the ratepayers a Billion dollars.

    2. They designed them in-house and got MHI to manufacture them but did not get a 50.50 NRC review of all their changes to save shut down time and Money.

    3. They installed Unit 2 and ran it for a little over a year, then installed Unit 3 which started to leak in the first year of use (while Unit 2 was shut down for refueling).

    4. The radioactive leakage in Unit 3 caused a NRC inspection and upon inspection they found that Unit 3 had 8 tubes that failed in-situ pressure testing, something which has never happened before in the history of the US "fleet". They also found one tube inUnit 2 that had 90 wear, which is well over the 35% limitation!

    5. Turns out that these generators were not designed for "in-plane" vibration and when Edison ran them at lower pressure to make more heat (and money) the tubes started to rub against each other and their supports.

    6. Now Unit 3 is toast and Unit 2 is heavily damaged, yet Edison is trying to get the OK to run it at 70% power so they can get the ratepayers to pay for all this debacle, despite the RISK of a nuclear incident or worse a nuclear disaster…

    7. Stay tuned for more!
