For what it’s worth, I think it’s comforting that many people here ARE taking precautions for their health. A grocery owner told me yesterday that many people are calling about it & stocking up with the right things! I also just heard an ad for an “Indoor Garden” store! Kids noticeably are not outdoors now, despite the good weather. No one goes out in the rain. Mothers look a little nervous, especially over their little girls, it seems. (but the economy or anything could cause that?) I hope many ARE thinking about radiation problems–there has been only one official pronouncement or warning issued here.

My guess is that Americans have learned something from watching the Katrina/FEMA nightmare, the Gulf disaster, and, of course, Chernobyl… And a lot of people here own guns. The core culture is so independent and defensive about things–such as their lives and property!! I will be ducking & hitting the floor if anything gets too weird here!!…

Churches aren’t waiting for Feds either–they are pushing harder for donations to tornado victims than I have ever seen. Just some observations!…

I’m curious about what others are seeing?…It seems like people at the ground level in the U.S. are going to make the difference.

People aren’t taking precautions here from what I can see. No one talks about radiation. It is business as usual.

It really surprised me to hear people talking about it. My neighbors (a biologist and engineer, respectively) discuss fallout and notify me about rain forecasts! People at the fitness center said they won’t use the showers there-no filters…Wow. They now have signs up at stores for Thyroid & Detox products, etc. A lot of people were talking about it, considering the media has labeled it “taboo”!

        Others don’t seem too aware… I see a lot of pregnant women here–that’s a worry.. :(

    • I’m on Vancouver Island, just above Seattle and I notice a few things. No-one goes out in the rain like you said. No children playing in the street.

An eery background “hum”, as if people are wondering what to do next. People are less happy, and look nervous. They watch the sky, looking for rain clouds.

I think everyone senses “something big” is about to happen, something worse.

Yes, I live in a beautiful area, but there are no children on the playgrounds. People take much fewer, shorter dog walks. (and everyone has a dog -they will have to get treadmills or those doggie/cat hamster wheels!) There is almost no traffic when there is a rain. You could hear a pin drop at times!

It’s encouraging that there is a strong undercurrent of people doing what they can, quietly, but seriously.

The only reason I’ve been onto this is that I had tough mandatory science classes in order to graduate from high school and college, including Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Geology..with labs! My education has enabled me to respect the serious impact of Fukushima. When things keep getting crazier, a good education is priceless! (fortunately, I had to take classical Economics and advanced Spanish, too!) However, commonsense is all-purpose!…

it’s the same here Warloc. it’s encouraging that the logjam of info is loosening at least in a few places, with a few people.

here the logs aren’t budging; folks act like it’s just another day. and look at you like you spontaneously combusted if there’s the least mention of any radiation news. or just smirk disgustedly.

kids/teens played until after 9 pm last night outdoors, yelling, laughing, running around like racehorses whoopin’ it up. i’ve seen no one stay indoors from rain. if anything, they seem more active outdoors during rains.

the [assorted] crits have already chomped off my face for being insane enough to suggest kiddos should stay indoors on higher radio-days.

        see hole in ground.

  • The full article is just below. I have a sneaky feeling that when one is unable to eat food, drink water, or breathe air, the writing is on the wall.

Radiation is all over the planet now, even if we accept that they are low levels – which I’m not willing to accept right now due to lack of reliable data. Even so, low-level radiation kills people, as our vets are finding out. Busby predicts about 400,000 deaths from radiation effects, and these are real people, not numbers. [I think he also said somewhere that the figures will be similar to the one million from Chernobyl].

Has anyone got a list of all nuclear reactors currently in trouble? They seem to be popping up everywhere.

Kan calls for halt of Hamaoka nuclear plant
    ——————————————-
Prime Minister Naoto Kan has asked a utility firm in central Japan to halt operations of all active reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant, due to the risk of earthquakes.

Kan told a hastily arranged news conference on Friday evening that he made the decision in the wake of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The prime minister said he asked Chubu Electric Power Company that operates the Hamaoka plant to halt reactors No.4 and No.5, and not to restart reactor No.3, which is now offline for regular inspections.

The plant in Shizuoka Prefecture has 5 reactors, but units No.1 and 2 are permanently shut down for decommissioning.

The Hamaoka complex is known to sit directly above the projected focus of the Tokai Earthquake that experts have long warned of.

Kan said that a science ministry panel on earthquake research has projected an 87-percent possibility of a magnitude-8-class earthquake hitting the region within 30 years.

He said that considering the unique location of the Hamaoka plant, the operator must draw up and implement mid-to-long-term plans to ensure the reactors can withstand the projected Tokai Earthquake. Kan also said that until such plans are implemented, all the reactors should remain out of operation.

Chubu Electric has declined to respond immediately to the prime minister’s request. But Kan said he will try hard to win the company’s understanding.

The prime minister added that his government will do its utmost to ensure the stoppage of the reactors does not seriously affect power supplies in Chubu Electric’s service areas.

Kan said that although power shortages might occur when demand surges in the summer, he is confident that with the cooperation and understanding of the public, the nation can overcome such difficulties.

      Awesome post!

What jumps out to me is:

“He said that … the operator must draw up and implement mid-to-long-term plans to ensure the reactors can withstand the projected Tokai Earthquake. Kan also said that until such plans are implemented, all the reactors should remain out of operation.

Chubu Electric has declined to respond immediately to the prime minister’s request. But Kan said he will try hard to win the company’s understanding.”

At first Kan seems on track in MANAGING the Utility to meet regulations and take directions from the Gov’t. After Fukushima it is positive to see the Gov’t react intelligently and proactively in asking for enhanced safety initiatives including shutting it down UNTIL the plant can DEMONSTRATE how they can meet the hazards.

That’s got to be a huge step in the right direction.

It is illuminating, however, how the Utility ‘declined to respond immediately’ and very disappointing. It suggests that the Gov’t can give a directive and the Utility ‘operates as normal’ despite the directive. I want to read the Utility’s reply of acknowledgement of the potential dangers and necessity to adjust operations with SAFETY for the population given the First Priority in the rendering of Nuclear Services. I think the only way to do that is for Govt and Utility to work well together as a team of sorts in operations with public impact outcomes.

Fukushima is why we need to have the Govt in control of the industry – 100%. If something happens to this other plant now, the utility’s resistance to follow directives would make them 100% responsible for anything that happened thereafter. Govt has the responsibility now to force a shutdown of a plant in violation of regulations etc.

  • Please point me to the Vets who are figuring this out. I saw one video on utube of a gal who lost her Laso I believe, to a rain puddle her dog had just rolled in, but, other than that, I’m the only one I know of with a sick animal. My Vet openly says that she has no evidence of any radiation being a problem in our area, and basically thinks I need my ‘tin foil hat’ now. At least she’s honest about it.

Japan wants 3 reactors halted for quake measures
By SHINO YUASA, Associated Press Shino Yuasa, Associated Press – 9 mins ago
TOKYO – Japan urged a power company Friday to suspend all three reactors at a coastal nuclear plant while a seawall and other structures are built to ensure damage from a major earthquake or tsunami does not cause a second nuclear accident.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference Friday evening the shutdown was requested for safety reasons, citing experts’ forecast of a 90 percent probability of a quake with magnitude of 8.0 or higher striking central Japan within 30 years.
