Los Alamos lab prepares to reopen as fire threat eases, Reuters, July 2, 2011 at 5:42 pm EDT:

Crews are patrolling the site to ensure it is out.
Technical Area 53 houses the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center which is used for nuclear physics experiments including weapons research.

I have spent almost 40 years working with electricity. From industrial applications to electronics. Many times I have seen squirrels short across wires and blow a fuse on power poles and inside buildings and yes, large power transformers.
It is not that uncommon. If a squirrel bridged across the proper contacts, it can blow up a power transformer. It’s not that hard to do.
With all of the fire disruption to wild life in that area I am not surprised to here such a story.
Is it the truth, who knows, but I know it does happen.

A few days ago I saw pictures of a small deer (fawn) hanging on power lines and, it shorted out the circuit, blew a fuse, and many were without power. Seems a large eagle must have dropped it from above and bang, on target. 2h!t happens and it is not always some horror plot.
I do admit this nuke plant stuff is getting WAY out of line.
I mean it’s getting past stupid.

Have you ever seen such a fire spread to an acre in size?
That part seems unusual, and although some media is just calling it “a small fire” other reports put it at “about an acre in size” which is small in comparison to the wildfires in the area, but pretty big for a fire at an industrial park

Good point.
If a large high voltage transformer, say the size of an SUV, blew up, the oil contained within could fly out, covering an area of a baseball diamond. Considering the dry and windy conditions, the fire could cover a acre before you got to it.
Oil inside a transformer acts to transfer heat to the outer container walls where you see those large fins sticking out, to cool the whole thing down.
I know of one incident where one blew up and burnt many acres before it was under control. Just depends upon the conditions of the surrounding area.

Next time you see a large transformer, I mean large, with those tall cone shaped insulators on top with a chain-link fence around it, you will notice that within the fenced area there is large gravel stone on the ground. If sparks fall from a malfunction, there is no fire.
If the thing blows up, burning oil fly’s through the air and lands outside the fenced area. I wouldn’t want to be within 100 feet of something like that.

Recently in North of Germany two crows (doing whatever crows do near electrified railway lines) were blamed for bringing a railway network to a standstill. Unfortunately the birds were burned to a crisp.
An interesting point is that the Chernobyl sarcophagus is now full of holes and many birds, as well as the rain, are entering it. Of course the deadly Red Forest of Pripjat is one of the most radioactive places on earth so it’s a dilemma for our feathered friends and the local squirrels.
I wouldn’t normally say an acre was a ‘small fire’ – a soccer field is 2.5 acres – it’s nearly one half of a soccer field! However, in this case, it’s a small fire relatively speaking.

Maybe map this stuff out before deciding to what degree to be freaking out about sensationalistic stories such as this one; keep in mind that this video clip is from Mainstream Media (MSM), which garners its funding through ads / viewership numbers. More sensationalism = more viewers = more ad money.

While I’m certainly not freaking out, I do recall that one fireman said the fire could burn ‘indefinitely’ and involve a hundred thousand acres. So lots of little things they buried out there, or didn’t store well enough, might make their presences known.

i was talking to ron paul last week and he is very worried about the gold in fort knox.
