[... Regarding] the massive Mustang Complex on the Idaho-Montana border [...] fire information officer Steve Berube [said "...] there’s no active firefighting going on there right now.”
The fire has grown in size for two months and is among the nation’s largest active fires.

“Our meteorologist is saying that in the long run, we might be having rain coming in Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,” Berube said. “That could help a lot.”

State environmental officials began taking air samples near North Fork on Thursday after learning that sites contaminated by radiation either were burned over or still threatened by the Mustang Complex fire.

Earlier this week, residents near North Fork raised concerns about the sites contaminated by uranium or thorium

Cindy Hallen, who lives just miles from a former uranium mine that underwent an EPA cleanup, said she is running an air purifier and staying indoors.
“I don’t want to be sounding alarms, but we’re dealing with radioactive materials,” she said.

The ‘Response’
- Salmon-Challis National Forest Supervisor Frank Guzman did not return a telephone call Thursday seeking comment.
- A Forest Service spokeswoman said she was unable to provide information on the radiological deposits or their status.
- Air-quality specialists at Idaho National Laboratory said the risk of radiation exposure from wildfires burning over previously contaminated soils is low because the soil itself doesn’t burn [See Below]. As a result, the radiation cannot escape into the air.
- Erick Neher, regional administrator of the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, said the potential health threat is believed to be minimal. A more significant and known risk to area residents, Neher said, is the dense smoke [...] “There may be some minor increase in background levels of radioactivity –which we’re exposed to every day — but that is nothing compared to fine particulates from smoke,” he said.

Date: Sept 21, 2012
Some North Fork, Idaho residents have expressed concern about the potential release of radioactive contaminants into the air from abandoned mines in the Salmon River corridor as a result of the Mustang Complex forest fire. According to fire managers, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality considers that risk to be low.

Smoke of another sort was the concern at the 327,017-acre Mustang Complex fire just south of the Montana border in Idaho. Fire officials recently learned flames reached a closed uranium mine near the community of North Fork, which raised fears of radioactive hazards in addition to flames.
[...]
“The EPA declared that site clear in June of 2008,” [North Fork assistant district ranger Ingrid Drieling] said Tuesday. “They removed 25 tons of hazardous material, 95 cubic yards of radioactive material and 2 cubic yards of mixed material.”
The mine produced some uranium and thorium (another radioactive element) during its active periods in the late 1950s and late 1970s, Drieling said. A major fire shift on Sept. 11 and 12 burned one of the mine area buildings on private land, but did not affect any material caps, she said.
Although several other historic mines in the Salmon River corridor of the Mustang Complex also showed traces of background radioactivity, Drieling said none of them were active uranium or thorium mines. Rather, they produced silver, gold, copper and cobalt.

A wildfire in east-central Idaho has burned through three former mining sites containing traces of radioactive thorium and uranium and was advancing a fourth such site on Thursday

One area of concern is a defunct uranium mine and milling operation 5 miles (8 km) west of North Fork
[...]
No decontamination of buildings at that site was ever performed, and at least one of those buildings burned in the fire, according to officials
Flames also swept two abandoned gold mines about 20 miles west of North Fork, where surface radiation, presumably from natural uranium and thorium deposits in the ground, has been measured at several times normal background levels, officials said.

TY, AGreenRoad. Too bad new uranium mines have already been planned. There should be NO market for any uranium or thorium and no reason to do any mining at all. Not only is there radioactivity in these elements and radaon gas released, they use chemicals which also destroy the aquifers and groundwater. People should come first. We cannot live without clean food, water, and air.

The wildfires that have ravaged Idaho for over a month are now bringing new fears as the fires have burned through three radioactive mining sites and are heading towards a fourth, Reuters reports.
The news agency reports that the four sites hold radioactive thorium and uranium. One of the sites is a defunct uranium mine, and the buildings on the site, one of which has burned, have never been decontaminated.

One area of concern is a defunct uranium mine and milling operation 5 miles west of North Fork, where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted a cleanup several years ago of polluted soil, hazardous wastes and piles of raw uranium and thorium ore.
No decontamination of buildings at that site was ever performed, and at least one of those buildings burned in the fire, according to officials from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
Flames also swept two abandoned gold mines about 20 miles west of North Fork, where surface radiation, presumably from natural uranium and thorium deposits in the ground, has been measured at several times normal background levels, officials said. http://business.itbusinessnet.com/article/Idaho-wildfire-roars-through-former-uranium-mine-site-2204282

Go about your business people … there's nothing to worry about … radiation we're exposed to every day … minor increase in background levels … don't forget to take your 'soma' and watch lots of television … remember, you could win the lottery, too, and become a successful American, like Willard Mitt Romney … with a trophy wife and lots of money stashed in Bermuda and Grand Cayman … what's not to love about this country … just be happy … and watch television … and have a beer with your background radiation … there's nothing to worry about … mind the sinkhole …. just go about your business … only minor levels … nothing out of the ordinary … we're in charge here … and we feel so confident, we've shut off all our radiation monitors … that's right … normal background levels … don't worry about a thing … 'cause we're GE, and we bring GOOD things to life … move along now … be happy … keep smiling … taxes are for the little people … keep moving … only sixty-three shopping days 'til Christmas … keep moving … normal levels … no worries …. move along there …. keep smiling …

Ouch, nedli. Laughin' just to keep from cryin'. I found out yesterday that GE (and many other big corporations) actually pay negative federal income tax. Their after-tax profits are substantially greater than their before-tax profits!

And with those bucks he bought some nukes, eeyei eeyei o
With a nuke nuke here, and a nuke nuke there
Here a nuke, there a nuke, everywhere a nuke nuke
Noda and Obama bought some nukes

I was so blown away by the pre-vid commercial for your second link that I could scarcely leave my after-thoughts to watch the actual video! The commercial runs for at least 30sec and is for a "Samsung something-or-other III". The commercial almost looked like an Onion creation – nothing but tech-speak of enthusiastic uber-consumers waiting hours in line for the latest gee-whiz comm gadget, (only to discover the Samsung will out-perform them all). High-consumption culture has gone so far it can't promote its goods without accidentally creating a parody of itself!

Agreed you guys-and no matter what we know or feel about it, we have to keep living in and with it. That and with the gross majority of others who are oblivious or unconcerned even still well into this collective nightmare. I don't want to say it and curse it into being, but life has become upside down. There was so much promise and greatness before me as a younger man even.

Sound the alarm, it's okay!
I believe Cindy is prudent and smart.
Cindy Hallen, …said she is running an air purifier and staying indoors. “I don’t want to be sounding alarms, but we’re dealing with radioactive materials,” she said.
Several things stand out to me on the above combination of news reports.
1. "..specialists at Idaho National Laboratory said the risk of radiation exposure from wildfires burning over previously contaminated soils is low because the soil itself doesn’t burn. As a result, the radiation cannot escape into the air."
This is an EXAMPLE of a partial truth. Leaving out a lot of important questions or additional information so that the full truth is skipped over.
Such as:
What about plants that have grown from that soil and then burn?
What about dead leaves and pines needles laying on the ground?
2. Nowhere is Fukushima FALLOUT it mentioned!!!
What about that?
IGNORance is no excuse.

Here's an interesting read and a step back in time from a little over a year ago.
My thoughts on burning and my encounter with local officials that I documented here. It's very sad and unbelievable that NOTHING has CHANGED.

We have hot rain in Eastern Wa today. I am in Benton City, WA near the Hanford reservation. It rained briefly today, and it also happens to be the first rain since receiving my counter a month or so ago. I took a clean paper towel and wiped all the drops from my windshield. I measured 221 cpm and 0.66 microsieverts/hr during a one minute count and 188 cpm and 0.56 microsieverts/hr during a 10 minute count. This is the highest count I have gotten on anything yet with my counter and found it quite disturbing, as there are so many critters and people out there getting rained on that haven't a clue.
I am not sure where the fallout is from, but we are southwest of the uranium mining facility that is burning in Idaho. We are under an "air quality alert today" due to the smokey haze in the air, although the background readings I have taken of the air are typical today. Since I have been measuring starting a month or so ago, our background is around 40-50 cpm.

My geiger counter readings outside are as high as 80 CPM with an average of 50 but I have never seen it climb like it has today and the wind is coming from Idaho. So… I"m not sure if it's from the recent accident at TMI or from Idaho. Things that make ya go hmmm.
