If the building is standing they can spray water on the pool and maintain some kind of cooling, enough to get by, especially now that the pool is cooler than 14 months ago.The concrete mixture idea can only be in response to a fuel pool collapse. So they are really admitting they know that it might collapse!! It is a completely crazy idea, those who have said the building would collapse if sprayed [with concrete-like mixture] in a standing pool are correct. But the idea was only generated if the building falls down on the ground. Then this idea might be better than doing nothing with fuel laying on the ground because it would slow the release of radioactive material. But it would mean that this pile would forever be dangerous and some releases would continue for years.
What a “Hail Mary” this is. TEPCO screwed up by admitting this, there have been several stories the last few days that are illuminating much more.

Except with a 'Hail Mary' toss you at least have a chance of success.
Illuminating… I agree 100%.

Important to see fuku coverage on other sites, such as below, but surprising that ENE, the unquestioned leader, is not atop the links covering the disaster:

"those who have said the building would collapse if sprayed [with concrete-like mixture] in a standing pool are correct…"
i agree with this statement.. the weight of concrete would be enough to cause real concerns, so the idea of spraying concretee is to cover the spilt fuel rods.. probably the only choice they will have if the sp4 goes… otherwise nobody will be able to be near the site..
it seems that tepgov can not give any information out that might cause "concern"… and they also do not want to take the precautionary measure of evacuation of a large area.. like the oncologists are going to wait until the thyroid nodules become cancerous before they deal with it, tepgov will wait for the acccident to happen and then deal with it.. and they still do not have an adequate monitoring system in place to evaluate the damage in real time.. all monitoring in japan is done with the blessing of tepgov and under the warchful eye and useless, unsensitive software of the IAEA, and i include SAFECAST and the food monitoring in this too!
but why mention the concrete spraying now? every bit of news is carefully crafted and all the reports are timed for major press campaigns..
the last major press campaign and series of "reports" was in september to combat the petition to the UN for the children of fukushima to be evacuated.. and to cover up the extent of the contamination in europe from budapset and mercoule " incidents as well as others.

the third component to the presss campaign is that it lays the way for nuclear funding/agreement of future or present projects..
so the reports, press campaign and then the funding applications go in and are agreed..
the whole campaign is carefully crafted, nothing is "let out" unless it is for the good of the nuclear industry.. so i have to maybe disagree with this statement (respectfully)
"…TEPCO screwed up by admitting it’s preparared to spray concrete on spent fuel.."
to clarify my thinking on this a few points on why they would release the info on their well thought out plan of spraying..
a) reassure the markets

b) allow a positive nuclear history that can be used to combat helen caldicott (should be good for george monbiorobot
c) to protect nuclear shareholders and investers
d) act as propaganda to keep the population on board. to make them feel reassured and not fearful of the "big green hope"
d) to deflect the arguments away from other nuclear problems
e) as a way of allowing the nuclear cabal to flex there muscles or pissing on the tree (marking territory) thereby keeping people in line..
f) to combat the admin from enenews and other truth tellers
g) to combat mainstream articles and authors like … john pilgar and his invisible book on fukushima?? (whats with that guy anyway.. comes out for the anniversary of fuku and?????? english media putting the screws on john? then remember the children of fukushima, do the…

the real mistake was printing the WHO childrens report weeks before the results… ive been wondering about that??
to cover up the results and to allow a history that is beneficial to the nuclear cabal?
is there some funding needed hurriedly and they had to jump the gun?

well, i am VERY suspicious of recent reports and media coverage and expect the funding etc applications to be flying in soon!

wonder what could be traded to decommission all those reactors?? it would have to be a Argentine banana ?
anyway, as long as outspoken people like kingofthep[REMOVED AGAIN]s censure his own trusted readership against the "R" word, what hope have the children of fukushima?

Once they stall for a few years they can just refer to the global contamination as "background" radiation. All the pollution from the uranium mining, processing, fuel fabrication, weapon production and atmospheric testing is a sizeable portion of what they tell us our "natural" exposure is now. The potential releases from Fukushima would dwarf what has been released before and we should do what we can to prevent the nightmare that the largest-ever addition to "background" radiation would bring.

Tepco lacking personnel to work at Fukushima in case of any emergency!
From Fukushima Diary:
"Actual Fukushima worker Happy11311 admits if another major aftershock hits Fukushima, they can’t even get close to the reactors and the risk is not only SFP4, it would be all the reactors."
"I tweeted this before but in case of another major aftershock or Tsunami, it won’t be only reactor4. I think all the reactors will be in crisis. Tepco says they have prepared multiple coolant means, but if the radiation level goes too high, we can not even get close. Also even if the reactor buildings remain safe, roads won’t be safe to approach the reactors."
<End>
"Actually 311 caused a lot of cracks on the ground, there were a lot of places where you can not drive by car. Even pumper trucks or fire trucks can not drive maybe. Above all, now we don’t have
enough human resource nor engineers to settle down reactor4 in addition to other reactors."
Kiss it all goodbye. Even if they had all the human resources it would be to no avail.

"Happy11311" is part of the mystery. He has been "leaking" inside stories to Fukushima Diary from almost the beginning of the crisis. Who is he? Why hasn't Tepco outed him? How can he stay on the job so long if conditions are so dangerous? What are his motivations? Why is he the only such source?… and so forth.

Where are all the human resources to work at Fukushima in case of
an emergency? (provided they could get close to work there)
Ok. Where is Waldo on the Island.
Are they all busy at the other 14 reactors in distress?
Are a lot of workers too sick or dead from the radiation?
Or have the workers refused to work any longer?
Perhaps the Japanese nuclear industry expanded so much over the last 40 years
that they ran everything with the minimum personnel necessary to keep things going.
How about some truth Tepco!

Well, it must be good for you because Time says so:
http://www.timeslive.co.za/world/2012/05/24/more-than-radiation-at-fukushima
Last year's Fukushima nuclear disaster has not led to any deaths or illnesses from radiation so far, but has caused social and psychological problems, UN radiation experts say in Vienna.
Cancer rates would not rise significantly in Japan, according to interim findings by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).
"The add-on effect of this radiation will be low and will not be observable scientifically," said Wolfgang Weiss, the German government radiation expert who heads the panel of scientists.
Thyroid cancers among children were unlikely to rise, because of relatively quick evacuations.
In contrast, social effects like depression, higher suicide rates and discrimination against people from the Fukushima region were much more serious.
Young women from the region believe that they can no longer bear children and potential marriage partners are staying away, Weiss told dpa.
"Other women say that they have to have abortions now," he said.
UNSCEAR plans to issue a full report next year, based on Japanese government data that the experts comparing with findings from independent sources.

By the sounds of this report, why do we bother to protect nuclear reactors from people then? Why are we concerned about 'dirty bombs'?
One could conclude that if there are no physical side-effects we should place NPPs next to maternity hospitals.
We should'nt bother covering nuclear fuel in water.. there is no immediate effect if it's left exposed, what's the problem?
No, really, this report concludes that all the concerns of enenews readers are not to be bothered with. Simply, it's the mental effects, like discrimination, suicidal tendencies, that should be addressed.
So let's stop all this complaining about radiation, just hold hands, smile and everything will be alright.. there there now, that feels better, right ?

Fact is, radiation is spewing everywhere in the northern hemisphere. And reaching the southern hemisphere as well. And all from ((one nuclear plant)). And every breath you take has radiation in it. This is fact, check the data. So, why are our politicians allowing the existence of this horrid technology? . . .why do they bend over and take it from a few sick nuclear nuts? …Btw, there are billions of us, and a couple hundred of the nuts that push this crap technology. So, do the math. Basically, it's the (((end))) of the nuclear age. Now, lets get started to decommission these plants before the next catastrophe. The next country lost from the face of the earth could be France. Or, eastern U.S. It's not a matter of "if", but a matter of "when". The weasel politicians need to rethink their lives and do something for mankind.

This the product information from http://www.stonesystem.com. How to apply Concrete Spray. I don't think TEPCO concrete is ready to apply concrete spray.
"Concrete must be perfectly dry. All surfaces must be free of oils, grease, dirt, mildew, mould, varnish, and anything that will prevent adherence to the surface. Surfaces should also be degreased with a commercial grade degreaser or scrubbed with a diluted acid, and rinsed abundantly with water. Mix 1 part of STONE POLYMER with to parts of water and use about 7 litres of this mix per bag of HARDSTONE SPRAY.
Moist the surface without exaggerating and apply a thin coat with a squeegee or trowel and allow to dry."
Of course stonesystem didn't mention the effect that radiation will have on their product.

How would they spray the concrete onto the rods that are skattered about?????
From a crane? The idea sounds crazy. Why don't they work on preseving the structure????? Seems a better plan. Craddle the pool in a mound of rock and sand….or there maust be something that can be done to keep the structure standing.

if they expect it to collapse, they should build a catch basin for the collapsed structure, so they can entomb it when it collapses.
but not these TEPCO turkeys, they would rather worry about their bonuses.

Yes all reactors should be required to have core catchers but that would cost too much for something that could never, ever happen. Things that make ya go hmmm. If only they had done that initially but now it is too late.

I don't actually understand what spraying in concrete will achieve, other then postponing the inevitable.
Oh, maybe it's because the tepco operators don't want to die today, but it's okay for someone in the future to risk their life, thanks to the selfishness of the current generation.
No burying or emtombing or other postponing is acceptable. The current mongrels that started this problem can be the ones that finish it. Stalling and leaving it to others is despicable. Gutless, selfish and ignorant – what a world.
