UK Taxpayers face extra 250m bill for nuclear waste clean-up:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/dec/25/energy-industry-nuclear-waste?newsfeed=true
The taxpayer will have to stump up almost £250m more to bail out the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in the next financial year after falling asset sales and rising expenditure cut its income by 17.5%.
The shortfall is revealed in the NDA’s just-published draft business plan for 2012-15, which shows the impact of being unable to offload land to the private sector for new nuclear plants and the end of the contracts to supply Japan with mixed-oxide fuel.
The setback will give more ammunition to environmentalists and other critics who argue that the wider nuclear industry is infamous for cost overruns and calls on public funds.

…The ostrich is being offered a bit of food from one of the animal rescuers in the evacuation zone. The ostriches belonged to a farm near the Fukushima Daiichi plant. After everyone evacuated someone let those still alive loose so they could forage for food. They are frequently spotted by people in the zone and on security cameras. They have become an odd juxtaposition among the abandoned towns as they wander looking for something to eat. Thanks to Kimiko for the picture!

What do you know about nuclear fracking?
What do you know about an Aug. 19, 2009 nuclear blast?
Transmutation on the Ocean Bottom
June 20, 2011
“With the large releases of methane under the Gulf of Mexico by deep drilling and nuclear fracking of the basalt plain large quantities of methane ice have piled up on the bottom. Given time the bacteria will eat all the methane keeping the Gulf deep waters cool and making a lot of fish food. The use of Corexit emulsifier sinking the red coloured petroleum to the bottom will in time be transmuted by the bacteria.
“The radioactivity in the petroleum, fall-out from the August 19 2009 nuclear blast 10 kilometres under the alluvial fan of the Mississippi will also be transmuted by the bacteria. In biological systems radioactivity drops fifteen times faster than in a test tube.
“The practise of the US Navy to drop decommissioned nuclear reactors in the ocean depths may be the best solution for long term elimination of such materials. The bacteria eats the iron into “rusticles” as seen on the Titanic at 10,000 feet deep and transmutes toxic radioactive elements fifteen times faster than in underground bunkers….”

Nuclear Proliferation with Particle Accelerators
2005
“The use of accelerators to produce 239Pu or 233U is compared to the production of these materials in a small nuclear reactor. The comparison is given in terms relevant to an entry-level proliferator. Production rates, technological complexity, methods of acquisition, costs, and detection methods are compared.
INTRODUCTION
“It is generally recognized that the acquisition of fissile material is the largest obstacle to making nuclear weapons. Traditionally, this involves either enrichment technologies, used to extract fissile 235U from natural uranium; or nuclear reactors, used to produce man-made fissile materials, namely 239Pu or 233U. Both routes have long been the focus of nonproliferation controls. Particle accelerators, by contrast, have not been accounted for by nonproliferation controls, but can also produce weapon-usable fissile material….”

Pilgrim Nuclear plant
On Monday, December 26, 2011, at 1250 hours, with the reactor at 100% core thermal power, the station entered a 24-hour action statement to initiate a controlled shutdown and be less than 104 psig reactor pressure due to suspected leakage across the first stage of safety relief valve (SRV) RV-203-3D and subsequent declaration of the SRV inoperable due to criteria specified in Pilgrim plant procedure 2.2.23.
“As background; the Pressure Relief System includes four (4) SRVs and two (2) spring safety valves (SSVs). The SRVs discharge through their individual discharge piping, terminating below the minimum suppression pool (torus) water level. The four SRVs and the two SSVs are installed on the Main Steam piping in containment between the reactor pressure vessel and the flow restrictors.
“While at full power, indication of a steam leak across the first stage pilot of RV-203-3D was determined in accordance with criteria specified in procedure 2.2.23. Specifically, the SRV is inoperable if the pilot stage thermocouple temperature is 35 degrees F below its baseline temperature (with a lower decrease at the 2nd stage thermocouple) and cannot he explained by a corresponding downpower. The safety relief valve was subsequently declared inoperable and the Limiting Condition for Operation (LCO) for Technical Specification (TS) 3.6.D was entered. Due to the valve being declared inoperable, the station is required to be shutdown and reactor coolant pressure below 104 prig within 24 hours per T.S. 3.6.D.2.
“Currently, preparations are being completed to conduct the reactor shutdown and to initiate safety relief valve repairs.

Scientists test sick Alaska seals for radiation
Experts not sure if woes, from hair loss to bloody lesions, tied to Fukushima nuclear plant
By Bill Rigby
SEATTLE — Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska’s Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals’ fur coats.
Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor.
“We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseased animals captured near St. Lawrence Island with a request to examine the material for radioactivity,” said John Kelley, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
“There is concern expressed by some members of the local communities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushima nuclear reactor’s damage,” he said.
The results of the tests would not be available for “several weeks,” Kelley said….

So sad.. yesterday I read this
http://newsminer.com/bookmark/16895861-Officials-No-Alaska-radiation-from-Fukushima
ridiculous as we read early on “… keeping information about possible high Iodine-131 doses in Midway and Alaska out of the document collections subject to FOIA and away from everybody outside the NRC itself became a regular Big Deal…”

Blow it up to full screen. I use the ctrl key and the scroll on my mouse to zoom in on the hole in the corner of #2 on the south end.
The large black hole appeared a week or two ago. The smaller hole toward the middle of the south wall, appeared first as a photoshopped tree on the wall an 80 foot tall tree – where one didn’t exist before.
The two holes appear to be merging now, and the flames that appear visible through the holes look exactly like the burning I was describing on #3 last week – BTW go back and look at #3 – they parked a crane in front of it, but the the flames are there still too.

James are you sure it is breaking news, or are they finally unable to hide it any longer?
I think the hole was blown last week.
At one point I thought I could see fire through it – and speculated that it was possibly the SFP2 collapsing – it’s right in that spot.
Then they put a fake tree – an 80 foot tall fake tree on the cam view and I couldn’t tell what the heck was real or not.

Please help figure this out people, but it might be that you are close to being right James 2 and if so, we need to really be aware of the jet stream and when this happened so we can prepare for the onslaught of more contaminating poisons from this event if it is true.

It’s already here. #3 was burning a week ago.

the Corbett report references Enformable as the source
Here is the archive for Dec at Enformable

Lucas, of Enformable, is a great source of information.
I vaguely recall reading about the hole in unit 2 earlier (some time back–I cannot recall if it was days or a little longer)
I’m having trouble finding the specific link…

“Dow AgroScience, LLC, is petitioning the U.S. government to deregulate a genetically engineered variety of corn that is resistant to 2,4-D, an extremely toxic pesticide that was 50% of the recipe to making Agent Orange (used in the Vietnam War as a weapon of mass destruction).

We are advising the public that the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has received a petition from Dow AgroScience LLC seeking a determination of nonregulated status of corn designated as DAS-40278-9, which has been genetically engineered for increased resistance to broadleaf herbicides in the phenoxy auxin group (such as the herbicide 2,4-D) and resistance to grass herbicides in the aryloxyphenoxypropionate acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase inhibitor group (such as quizalofop herbicides).”

He measured radiation from an airline flight and on face masks worn during the flight.
Interesting what he found.
