The more I read news from Fukushima, the more I appreciate the effort taken at Chernobyl with far less tech. And that wasn’t enough either. 9 months post the accident, there still is no clear news on scientists being actively involved in managing proceedings.
The old documentaries of Chernobyl outline the highly risky search the scientists undertook for the molten cores – with a sense of urgency. If, as the nuclear pimps insist Fukushima is a “lesser” disaster (if there is such a thing), I can’t understand why there are no scientists on site trying to figure out the situation instead of publicity stunts like “cold shutdown”. Surely the equipment and protection available now is better than then – particularly in Japan.
Report Comment
There’s a law in Japan that states that an independent scientific panel is to be at the plant after an accident, that they should make recommendations, etc. This law was ignored, and the scientists were not allowed to visit the plant.
Sorry, no link, but it’s an old story, March-April vintage.

Pieces of a True Nuclear Cannon: Underground Nuclear Tests, Salt Formations and One-Shot Kick Start to the Space Age
March 02, 2009
“…The cost is to find a location like another remote island to sacrifice the underground area for nuclear launch similar to the areas sacrificed for underground nuclear testing. However, with proper preparation and a dome with a door and charges to speed the collapse of the shaft, there would be no radiation into the atmosphere. Other industries like oil, gas and coal regularly contaminate salt domes and underground and above ground locations. This would be safer and cleaner than those continuing operations. We would use nuclear bombs that are costing money to be maintained in storage and have a risk non-peaceful use. There is no risk of damaging EMP because damaging EMP occurs when a nuclear device is exploded at high altitude….
“Use existing nuclear device or dismantle several devices and reconfigure for optimum directing of energy
* “Use an underground area – how much is the value of a few cubic miles of salt ?
* “Almost no one includes the cost of the salt dome for strategic petroleum storage
*” Make a large metal shell projectile and place ablative oil on the bottom
* “Create the appropriate shaft to the launch chamber.
* “The only applicable treaty that has currently been ratified by the USA is the Threshold Test treaty which limits underground nuclear tests to 150 kilotons or less. The comprehensive test ban treaty has not been ratified….
“So we should try to size at that range for a nuclear launched projectile. Shaping the projectile like a bullet or rocket would also help.
“90pct containment was proved by Pascal A dome, which did not get direct blast exposure but instead needs a rapid closing mechanism after projectile exit.
Report Comment
[cont.]
“10pct blown into air should be 99pct contained within dome which sees NO direct heat radiation. There would be considerable secondary from the muzzle blast. So 99.9+ percent containment. 10 megaton blast say 15 kilograms tritium output all but 15 grams contained, if 5 kt fission (design a device with less fission and more fusion) then all but 5 tons of fission products contained! (fraction of 1 gram by weight)
“There could be conventional explosives in the shaft to collapse the shaft after the launch projectile has passed….
“Summary
*”This is a modification of the old underground nuclear tests. Repeating the old 5-10 megaton tests. But reconfigure to optimize conversion to kinetic energy. Radiation containment for underground tests is a known problem and has proven tests.
* “The Project Orion configuration and directed nuclear blasts had the Orion work and the Casaba-Howitzer work. So 85% conversion of nuclear explosion to directed propulsion is known.
* “Sacrifice one salt dome or an area under an island. Using natural geological feature mostly reduces cost of containment.
* “Actual out of pocket cost less than one billion. Can be done within 2 years.
* “Can do some supercomputer modeling and tweaking and optimization to be sure.
* “Very limited technical risk for the launch. Nuclear bombs work.
* “Leverages the trillions spent on the arms race for good. (sunk costs)
* “Negotiate for the exception to the test Threshold test ban and only ratify the Comprehensive test ban with an exception for space launches. Maybe allow Russia, China, UK and France and other to share the payload that is delivered or for each to be allowed to launch one.
Report Comment
[cont.]
“This proposal is simpler, cheaper and safer than Project Orion. The proposal is not to build a manned space vehicle but an unmanned projectile that contains cargo. There are not two hundred atmospheric explosions but one underground explosion. the pusher plate does not need to withstand multiple explosions but survive one while not losing the cargo. The cargo is selected and designed to survive the forces that it will encounter.
“There are petaflop class supercomputers now that were built for the sole purpose of modeling nuclear explosions in a precise way as an alternative to live tests. There are powerful lasers and other high energy machines created to validate the precision of the computer models.
“Most of what is being proposed is the simplest conversion of heat and explosive energy into kinetic energy. This is guns and metallergy and decades of nuclear weapons research and age old newtonian mechanics.
“An interesting question is what happens when you set off another nuclear bomb in fractured and crushed rock a year or so later? The ground has settled and has contamination but most of the most radioactive fallout is no longer dangerous. So long as the new charge is placed low enough so that the fallout does not escape the fractured rock then you could just keep re-contaminate the same contaminated site.

“…Batteries in cell phones at the Fukushima plant started running out on March 11 and with the failure of mains power couldn’t be recharged, preventing communication with the on-site emergency headquarters, according to the report….
“Fractured Communications
“Communications became so fractured that plant manager Masao Yoshida, stationed in the emergency bunker, didn’t know what some workers were doing. The high pressure coolant injection system at the No. 3 reactor was stopped by a worker without authority from plant managers, according to the report. The reactor was one of the three that melted down.
“In Tokyo, the central government’s response was muddled by miscommunication between two teams working on different floors of the same building, the report said.
“The report also criticized the government for failing to use its system for monitoring the spread of radiation in calculating evacuation areas. Transmutation on the Ocean Bottom
June 20, 2011
“With the large releases of methane under the Gulf of Mexico by deep drilling and nuclear fracking of the basalt plain large quantities of methane ice have piled up on the bottom. Given time the bacteria will eat all the methane keeping the Gulf deep waters cool and making a lot of fish food. The use of Corexit emulsifier sinking the red coloured petroleum to the bottom will in time be transmuted by the bacteria.
“The radioactivity in the petroleum, fall-out from the August 19 2009 nuclear blast 10 kilometres under the alluvial fan of the Mississippi will also be transmuted by the bacteria. In biological systems radioactivity drops fifteen times faster than in a test tube.
“The practise of the US Navy to drop decommissioned nuclear reactors in the ocean depths may be the best solution for long term elimination of such materials. The bacteria eats the iron into “rusticles” as seen on the Titanic at 10,000 feet deep and transmutes toxic radioactive elements fifteen times faster than in underground bunkers.

The US has sent a team of nuclear physicists to help BP plug the “catastrophic” flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from its leaking Deepwater Horizon well, as the Obama administration becomes frustrated with the oil giant’s inability to control the situation.
•
10 May 2010
“In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Hayward said the five-hour meeting involved a “very deep dive” into the situation at hand, with “lots of nuclear physicists and all sorts of people coming up with some quite good ideas actually.”
“Pressed further about the meeting, he said they had “come up with one good idea” but declined to elaborate.
“The five include 82-year-old Richard Garwin, who designed the first hydrogen bomb, and Tom Hunter, head of the US Department of Energy’s Sandia National Labs.
“In addition, Mr Chu has already despatched Marcia McNutt, the head of the US Geological Service, to the oil company.
“President Obama accused BP and its contractors of “falling over each other to point the finger of blame at someone else,” while adding “the potential devastation to the Gulf Coast, its economy and its people require us to continue our relentless efforts to stop the leak.”
“Thad Allen, a Coast Guard commandant, said that the slick “has the potential to be catastrophic.”
“BP was last night trying to position a “top hat” containment device – intended to slow the flow of oil – while still working on its final “top-kill” solution which involves filling the well with old golf balls and pieces of car tyre, followed by mud and then cement, in an attempt to absorb and then stop the flow.

“…Nuclear logging was initially developed to measure the natural gamma radiation emitted by underground formations. However, the industry quickly moved to logs that actively bombard rocks with nuclear particles. The gamma ray log, measuring the natural radioactivity, was introduced by Well Surveys Inc. in 1939, and the WSI neutron log came in 1941. The gamma ray log is particularly useful as shale beds which often provide a relatively low permeability cap over hydrocarbon reservoirs usually display a higher level of gamma radiation. These logs were important because they can be used in cased wells (wells with production casing). WSI quickly became part of Lane-Wells. During World War II, the US Government gave a near wartime monopoly on open-hole logging to Schlumberger, and a monopoly on cased-hole logging to Lane-Wells[5]. Nuclear logs continued to evolve after the war.
“The nuclear magnetic resonance log was developed in 1958 by Borg Warner. Initially the NMR log was a scientific success but an engineering failure. However, the development of a continuous NMR logging tool by Numar (now a subsidiary of Halliburton) is a promising new technology….”

Nuclear Explosion Can Heal the Bleeding Wound in the Gulf of Mexico
13.05.2010
“…It was only a matter of hit or miss which earlier resulted in the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, explosions in coal mines all over the world and also in the catastrophes which occur on a regular basis, but are very hard to liquidate. One may say that the American hit or miss has led to one of the most technologically complicated and horrific disasters.
“It is practically impossible to block the leaking well. There are neither specific technical possibilities for that, nor any methods to liquidate such oil-well flowing.
“The USSR had a sad experience in containing oil-well flowing in Central Asia. Two breakdowns occurred almost simultaneously. One of them took place in Urtabulak, where a gas torch was burning. The other one took place in Pamuk – a breakdown at an oil well. The two giant flames were extinguished with the help of nuclear explosions. They drilled two wells to approach the emergency wells under the ground and lowered nuclear devices into the wells. The troubled wells were blocked as a result of the explosions.
“The work was extremely hard, but it was worth it. I took direct participation in the experiment and was personally present there during the explosions. The experiment was a success. The exploitation of the Pamuk oil well was launched again and nothing could remind of the disaster which had been liquidated with the help of nuclear explosions.
“Afterwards, Soviet specialists conducted similar experiments in Turkmenia and then proceeded to worked-out deposits. The results were encouraging. Soviet specialists hoped that they could promote their technology to help other countries, the ones that signed the non-proliferation treaty but could use nuclear explosions in industrial purposes.
“The US declined the program over the threat of radioactivity. As a result, the Americans offered to ban the use of nuclear explosions in peaceful purposes. …

Climate change / food safety
snip
…”Depending on the greenhouse gas emissions scenario, global average temperature is expected to rise between 1.1° and 6.8° Celsius by the end of the century. And warmer temperatures are known to increase rates of some diseases: According to a recent study of salmonellosis in Europe, frequency of the ailment rises about 12 percent for every 1°C that air temperature increases beyond a baseline of 6°C, said Cristina Tirado, an environmental scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles. The precise cause for this trend isn’t clear, said Ewen Todd, a bacteriologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing. It’s possible that warmer temperatures cause bacteria to grow more quickly, or people may prepare food differently in warmer weather (grilling outdoors vis-à-vis cooking in a kitchen, for example).
Climate change can increase disease risks in several ways, Tirado added. The concentration of methyl mercury in fish increases about 3.5 percent for every 1°C rise in water temperature. Warmer sea-surface temperatures can boost the frequency of harmful algal blooms, leading to an increased incidence of paralytic shellfish poisoning. Higher water temperatures also enable the spread of pathogens to higher latitudes: An outbreak of vibriosis on an Alaskan cruise ship in 2005, later linked to oysters that had been harvested near one of the ship’s ports of call, represents the spread of the disease-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus to a locale more than 1,000 kilometers north of its previous known range. Dust storms, which are expected to increase in some regions due to climate change, could wreak their own havoc, because iron-rich mineral dust can drive a 10- to 1,000-fold increase in the growth rate of Vibrio bacteria.”

Worldwide effects of nuclear war:

“…It is because of this catalytic role which nitric oxide plays in the destruction of ozone that it is important to consider the effects of high-yield nuclear explosions on the ozone layer. The nuclear fireball and the air entrained within it are subjected to great heat, followed by relatively rapid cooling. These conditions are ideal for the production of tremendous amounts of NO from the air. It has been estimated that as much as 5,000 tons of nitric oxide is produced for each megaton of nuclear explosive power.
What would be the effects of nitric oxides driven into the stratosphere by an all-out nuclear war, involving the detonation of 10,000 megatons of explosive force in the northern hemisphere? Nothin to see here, move along…
But you would think that everyone there, including the webmaster would be able to spell Alpha, as in Alpha Radiation…
Start of a fire in decontamination machine of former nuclear manufacturing plant of Bosco Marengo (AL) under decommissioning.
On December 22nd 2011 Sogin S.p.A, which operates the former plant Fabbricazioni Nucleari of Bosco Marengo (AL) currently under decommissioning, communicated to ISPRA (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research)-which perform the functions of Nuclear Safety Authority- an anomalous event related to the decontamination machine by “shot blasting” located inside the plant occurred at 9:25 am local time. The machine is used to treat solid materials with very low contamination, resulting from the dismantling activities, in order to be cleared from the plant….
….Additional verification are in progress, including internal contamination of plant personnel.
From the beginning of the event ARPA Piemonte (The Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Piedmont region), operating in continuous connection with ISPRA, intervened to monitor environmental radiation contamination. Data from ARPA Piemonte indicates that the concentration of alfa and beta total activity measured in atmospheric particle samples inside and outside the plant are comparable with environmental background values normally found.
Further investigations are in progress by the operator. ISPRA requested a detail report of the event, including corrected measures to be adopted in order to restart the machine operation. An inspection on the site has been also performed.

A Pro-nuke person asks “Well, it’s pretty much established that there were no plutonium releases from the reactors, and you still haven’t addressed my question as to which yakusa is being accused of diverting nuclear materials.
Do you have any evidence? Do you have any answers to these many questions?
What if you don’t? What if you don’t like the answers?”

Federal regulators to review Oyster Creek reactors:
http://www.app.com/article/20120102/NJNEWS/301020066/Federal-regulators-to-review-Oyster-Creek-reactors
LACEY — Federal regulators have agreed to a request by environmentalists to review General Electric Mark 1 reactors, which is the type used at the Oyster Creek Generating Station.
A safety panel for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission posted notice Monday on its website, called the Federal Register, that it has accepted a request by three environmental groups, including 8,000 petitioners, to review whether approvals by the federal agency for venting systems at General Electric Mark I reactors should be revoked.
The reactor is also the same type that was in operation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, which suffered a meltdown and fire last March.

Vermont Yankee in 2011: Tritium, Strontium, Steam Leaks, and Lawsuits:
http://www.reformer.com/ci_19658863?source=most_viewed
“…In late 2011, the Vermont DOH discovered tritium in the river itself, which had migrated from under the plant, but at levels just above detectability.
Strontium was found in fish in the Connecticut River but the Vermont Department of Health and the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services maintained that the levels were consistent with fish found around the world and were attributable to above-ground nuclear testing from the mid-20th century and the Chernobyl meltdown in the 1980s.
In October, a technician accidentally flipped the wrong circuit breakers and shut down a non-safety related cooling system. That same month, a technician accidentally disconnected a fuel line to a diesel generator meant to supply power to the plant’s cooling system when the reactor is offline. An electrical system in the plant’s recirculation pump shorted out in late September. Also in September a faulty chiller valve meant to keep safety equipment cool threatened the shutdown of the plant but was fixed before it reached a crisis point. Leaks were discovered in a steam trap, the high-pressure coolant injection system and in three of the plant’s four safety relief valves…”

This may be bogus, or not that new from our earlier discussions about the ~~wall~~ on #4. but I heard about an hour ago, on the Mike Malloy Show that ‘that’ wall had collapsed completely, so it wouldn’t be long before the whole #4 collapses.
As I say, I don’t know if this is hype, bogus, or what.
Anyone else hear anything on this? Can’t find it on the usual threads.
