I tend to ignore the various frequent sparkles and weird transient color blooms – I figure most are artifacts of one kind or another.
I've definitely been seeing the big flashes in the last while though. They don't seem to be localized. They fill the whole screen. They last a second or so and are unmistakable – not the sort of thing where you have to squint and wonder whether you really saw something. They have been coming several minutes apart.
All in all, I'd guess they are image artifacts also, but who knows? Lively night on TepcoCam, for sure.

Beta-flare
Reddish glowing air above a nuclear power plants is called a beta-flare. The name comes from the main cause for the phenomenon which is free neutrons decaying into protons and electrons.
On top of that beta-flare is a mixture of all kinds of radiation and ionization. When ions (like the proton from a neutron decay) receive some replacement electrons, UV-light is produced. This in turn puts electrons on a charged orbit from witch they return by emitting visible light. Like in northern lights.

Lightning comes in every color of the rainbow, red, yellow, green, blue, and violet, to name a few. It’s almost always white, but often it's tinged with another color around the edges. The three most common colors aside from white are electric blue, electric yellow, and voltage violet.
The color of the bolt depends on how hot it is. The hotter the lightning, the closer the color will be to the end of the spectrum, red the coolest and violet the hottest.
The flash is probably from lightning. But the purple color all over the sky is from radiation, IMHO. The color is not from the webcam and not from the lightning. The lightning just makes the color visible. There is no way, IMO, that lightning could spread just color for such a long distance.
Just the "colors of Fukushima"..purple, blue/greens, red, white, orange, yellow, pink…all colors..and then black when it all goes away. Sorry just feeling down about the amount of radiation emissions..

I was talking to the Bay Area Air Quality District here in California about their
radiological monitoring of the air. They do not do it. They rely on EPA for the data.
I told them very important for them them to have day to day info on the radiological
quality of the air coming over in the jet stream to alert us. I do not hold out much hope
for them to do it. Talked to them awhile and gave them energy news web site to read
as well as the Radiation Network site. Anybody else who wants to called them who
live in Northern California their Public Info telephone # 415–749-4900
Air Monitoring department is 415-749-8460. I suggest people call them.
If there is re-critacality ongoing for the last two weeks or so, then stuff is in the
air on the West Coast.
Is this the same EPA..who asks volunteers to monitor sites the VOLUNTEERS set up? Majia asked me what I think about the flashes. First time when it happend I was more on the idea that it is a common storm. Lightenings happen when there is a difference between the el. potentials of the clouds and the ground and we see a big bright path of plasma, usually travelling from the cloud to the ground. On these videos we can not see this path. On the previous there were such, but they travelled more like horizontally. One more thing – when in front of the camera it goes in purple, and from behind it is violet. May be the sound can make it clearer, but anyway if it is a storm, it is not one of the storms, we used to know. Too many charged particles and extra energy are facts. What they can do we will see step by step.

The Gamma radiation is now appearing to be in High dose rate open air fission plumes arising from below the
foundations of the reactors onsite. The fuel has at this point has left the building.
To compare the dangers of past emissions with the two videos above is
like comparing the difference between witnessing a car crash on tv, and actually dieing in a car crash in real life.
At 32 seconds a large flash is observed. If this were lightning, occuring at this rate of speed / consistancy.
The entire sky would be lit up. From a storm system occuring just above the site in Fukushima. If the flashes were of aerial vector.
All surfaces with any metalic / reflective property would show the "lightnings" position above due to their reflective properties. However
we are not witnessing any reflections on the railings, of the hand rail. We are not seeing the roofs of the buildings exempting a glow from the multiple strikes taking place in the video.
We are not even seeing any emergency storm preperations taking place on site such as tepco employees, rushing to place protective covers on multiple equipment locations;
which would be essential from an operational standpoint.
What are we seeing.
In the above video we are seeing:
Steam. / Open air convection.
where is it coming from though?
No reactor is currently exempting a "breach" or tell tale sign of a current convection episode…
Thus, we must dig deeper into the possible candidates, ruling out the impossible, so no matter what results are left;
No matter how improbable are the responsible factors creating the events as filmed above.
We know that a light source being projected from above would show a reflective signiture on all surfaces that are capable of reflecting the photons in the lights spectrum.

I feel this is simply gamma decay taking place in the open environment. The emitters are likely penetrating the beta sheilding

If this is actually lightning (which it very well can be); Then It is very rare that the events are taking place in the way which they are.
If steam is coming from the ground (as it has been reported).
Then it is the only element I feel that can be responsible for creating these flashes.
I would assume that the ground water is cooking too fast for comfort, while the cooling of the reactor 1's primary containment is no longer having any effect on the run away fuel.

Those purple-violet flashes are clearly not lightening.
They are either "artifacts" or the beta flares Anne describes above.
Given that the plant got much steamier after the flashes, I'm betting on the latter.

Beta-flare
Reddish glowing air above a nuclear power plants is called a beta-flare. The name comes from the main cause for the phenomenon which is free neutrons decaying into protons and electrons.
On top of that beta-flare is a mixture of all kinds of radiation and ionization. When ions (like the proton from a neutron decay) receive some replacement electrons, UV-light is produced. This in turn puts electrons on a charged orbit from witch they return by emitting visible light. Like in northern lights.
The energies involved in beta-flare are sufficient to kill birds mid-flight. Or bring down airplanes if they defy the restricted area.
Ionization breaks up molecules in tissue (lungs for example) or interferes with electronics. That's why nuclear power plant even has a chimney; for fierce ventilation, to get rid of ions and excess neutrons within their quarter-an-hour lifetime. If the air flow stops, everyone inside the powerplant would die in 15 minutes or so. (This occurred in Tshernobyl, different case than the big accident.)

The flash is probably from lightning. But the purple color all over the sky is from radiation, IMHO. The color is not from the webcam and not from the lightning. The lightning just makes the color visible. There is no way, IMO, that lightning could spread just color for such a long distance.

I was talking to the Bay Area Air Quality District here in California about their
radiological monitoring of the air. They do not do it. They rely on EPA for the data.
I told them very important for them them to have day to day info on the radiological
quality of the air coming over in the jet stream to alert us. I do not hold out much hope
for them to do it. Talked to them awhile and gave them energy news web site to read
as well as the Radiation Network site. Anybody else who wants to called them who
live in Northern California their Public Info telephone # 415–749-4900
Air Monitoring department is 415-749-8460. I suggest people call them.
If there is re-critacality ongoing for the last two weeks or so, then stuff is in the
air on the West Coast.

Is this the same EPA..who asks volunteers to monitor sites the VOLUNTEERS set up? Since EPA sites are down..someone needs to look at the EPA salaries..and do some pruning..send down the dollars to the monitoring stations…and equipment. Everyone here is suffering from 'the worst allergies they have had in years' (a quote). my throat has been burning all day from 'post nasal drip'–a common allergic response…but I am wondering if it is from something else? We had rain recently and there is a lot of pollen about.

I feel that the alpha / beta shielding on the camera is likely failing due to high energy particle emittance. This is why the flashes noted above are consistent with the individual rain drops striking the cameras outer housing. Each time the cameras housing is stricken with a raindrop, a flash is observed.

Very interesting explanation for the flashes. makes a lot of common sense based on
actually having some kind of evidence and nuclear knowledge about how
nuclerized raindrops explode on hitting glass or camera housings. If we were to conclude
or be told that those flashes were directly coming from any of the buildings then
there would be perhaps more dire happenings coming our way with no body looking
out for our health and safety in giving us real time radiological monitoring and reporting.

Majia asked me what I think about the flashes. First time when it happend I was more on the idea that it is a common storm. Lightenings happen when there is a difference between the el. potentials of the clouds and the ground and we see a big bright path of plasma, usually travelling from the cloud to the ground. On these videos we can not see this path. On the previous there were such, but they travelled more like horizontally. One more thing – when in front of the camera it goes in purple, and from behind it is violet. May be the sound can make it clearer, but anyway if it is a storm, it is not one of the storms, we used to know. Too many charged particles and extra energy are facts. What they can do we will see step by step.

Compared to the video above the situation is very troubling in respects to past emissions.

The Gamma radiation is now appearing to be in High dose rate open air fission plumes arising from below the
foundations of the reactors onsite. The fuel has at this point has left the building.

like comparing the difference between witnessing a car crash on tv, and actually dieing in a car crash in real life.

At 32 seconds a large flash is observed. If this were lightning, occuring at this rate of speed / consistancy.
The entire sky would be lit up. From a storm system occuring just above the site in Fukushima. If the flashes were of aerial vector.
All surfaces with any metalic / reflective property would show the "lightnings" position above due to their reflective properties. However
we are not witnessing any reflections on the railings, of the hand rail. We are not seeing the roofs of the buildings exempting a glow from the multiple strikes taking place in the video.
We are not even seeing any emergency storm preperations taking place on site such as tepco employees, rushing to place protective covers on multiple equipment locations;
which would be essential from an operational standpoint.
What are we seeing.
In the above video we are seeing:
Steam. / Open air convection.
where is it coming from though?
No reactor is currently exempting a "breach" or tell tale sign of a current convection episode…

Then it is the only element I feel that can be responsible for creating these flashes.
I would assume that the ground water is cooking too fast for comfort, while the cooling of the reactor 1's primary containment is no longer having any effect on the run away fuel.
