Big steam cloud coming out of R2's 'barn door.' The pic is not contrast adjusted (below). There's a lot more going on than R4, indeed, given that gases are coming up from the plant every day according to Fukushima citizens. What were NPP designers thinking when 'any body of water' was considered the first choice for cooling in a meltdown?- :/ Corium must be working it's way down through destabilized sandstone that is wet with pockets of water = rad steam, leading to wider, more profuse steam events. If this (pic) is a result of concrete and metal being vaporized by corium in the concrete block or basement, of R2, then the radioactive steam will be filthy with a much larger variety of radioactive isotopes.
Someone posted the other day that granite lies under the sandstone. Granite is a mixture of elements one of which is uranium. What happens when the corium hits the granite?
roof line on Unit 4 on live TBs feed looks different. crane busy at work. looks like
they are removing as much of the building's upper structure to avoid that falling on
the rest of the stuff below. my guess. all the commentary about radiation induced
structural weakness is a major concern.
I posted some questions on the general discussion forum about the emissions we've been seeing on the Tepco webcam between units 3 and 4.
I've some good screen captures and Nuckelchen and others have some great video clips.
I asked about where the emissions might be coming from, now that Tepco has trotted out enough photos to convince even skeptics like me that unit 4 pool still stands.
Joy and Sickputer suggested melted coriums encountering water as the source of the emissions. We do know that unit 1 was a full melt-through and I have heat images of both 1 and 3 suggesting the corium spread…
Sam suggested the common spent fuel pool as the source of emissions.
Aigeezer posed some good questions in response to my query that we could consider trying to answer:
1a. For some arbitrary period (starting now?), do we have n reliable(?) reports of massive smoke/steam emissions coming from between 3&4 etc? ….
[Majia here: I think we can agree that these are emissions, right?]
1b. If so, what is the duration of these emissions? Are they at the same time each day? What is the trend – increasing, decreasing, stable?
1c. What (if anything) correlates with the emissions? Rain, fog, wind, dewpoint, other weather phenomena? Tepco activity reports? Crane activity? Lights and flashes? Measured radiation levels? Site visitations and press tours?…
Hi Majia. I haven't been following the webcam as much as many of you here, so I don't have any additional observations to offer. However, I do have more questions:
Does anyone have updated news about the state of the spent fuel pools in Reactor #1 and #2? We know their reactor loads melted through, and temps were rising a couple weeks ago in #2…but I don't recall TEPCO actually mentioning their spent fuel pools.
If anyone has any updates on these two pools, I would much appreciate it! Thank you.
My impressions from cameras:
- there are different spots that emit. The biggest (or several of them) is between R2 and R3. There is one in front of R1, one behind it, one between R3 and R4,work light area, and reactors themselves. The biggest surprise for me was the one on the right of R4 (TBS view)-rarely seen, but documented.
- There seems to exist a pattern of repeating steam events in slightly more than 2 weeks period. I tend to believe it is coriums work. The next one is due after 2,3, or 4 days, if the previous intervals were not just a coincidence.
- Humidity and darkness make emitions more visible, but steam can be seen during day time too.
- Fires under the towers were common before months, and a rare event now.
- Vegetation turened green and start to spread in May.(?)
- Crows can not be seen like in the autumn. One white cat and a racoon dog appear from time to time.(today instead of them walked a fat guy with a plastic bag in his hand)
- Cranes have busy and lazy days. The champions among them are the small ones, which do something near the buildings for hours. When steam comes, I do not remember them working.
This what an amateur can tell briefly.
Dear @jec, you and me have been here for a long time and I think we need a break. I needed it when Nuck has got his computer problems. My gut feeling was, it was not a coincidence and I continued to watch, as much, as I could. It is good, new people come here and continue observations. It is important, because radiation comes from here and it is essential to know when. We have to give them the information from previous months. You did a great job rating the emitions! Tepco admited that R2 emited 40% of radiation. I remember your ratings day after day. You are a great soul @jec, and it is a priveledge to speak with you. My deepest respect!
JNN…20:00- 21:00..One of the "blue orb"type criticalities.
There is flash at approx. :05 and beams can be observed near and around 3 ..the emissions from 3 more red than usual.
On the right edge beams can be observed coming from the CSFP area.
At :58 the light goes out. and a criticality can be observed.
TEPCO seems to have put the light out to obseve it.
At some points..it does look further than Unit 4..but I'm not sure that's correct.

@wideawake at 20:29, looks like something fell, or a beam of light? However, seeing at 20:39 the same thing high near the cranes, makes me think its some sort of explosive flare or light beam(s).
I'm not sure, always thought those falling/flying light beams to be disintegrating parts of fuel rods' and the raindrops! with a hole in the middle! to be fuel pellets..just common sense methinks.(grin).. There are several beams though, directly from the stack and from the furthest right light plume…I will try to capture screen shot and post.
@wideawake – yes, that was very much what I saw. Very similar, if not the same. That's what I'd call the purple pulse.
Earlier I had seen a flash. The big light was still on, so the flash seemed fainter, and as quick as a flash. But the pulse effect seemed to go for a second (or so).
Cheap webcams do not help this subject in the least. This should be a HD webcam .. sheesh. We're talking about billions of dollars and lives, over a $50 webcam.
Yesterday I observed for a short time a white rectangular object between #1 and #2. It has now disappeared. I also noticed what appeared to be flashes of light mostly around #1. Very odd. Today TBS/JNN seems to be down.
Probably why we can't see anything on the TBS cam right now – just a 'whiteout'. How the heck can workers work there when this scary stuff is going on? The radiation must be incredibly high – I doubt they can predict somewhat safer periods in which to work, but hope they can.
It has been raining, so the full screen flashes are probably heavy lightning.
But the smaller linear flashes… Maybe neutron beams.
Here's nuclearcrimes' tutorial on nuclear plant air
"Here are some examples of the gaseous fission products spewed from nuclear reactors and leaked underground nuclear tests: Krypton-85 is beta and gamma emitter that hangs around for 10.7 years. Krypton-87, with a half-life of 1.27 hours, decays through both beta decay (a neutron splits itself apart) but also neutron decay (it spits out a neutron particle) on its journey to stable Kr-86. That neutron can turn anything, like cells in your body, into radioactive isotopes!. Since Krypton-87 has a half-life of 1.27 hours, for almost 24 hours it is floating around our communities, from reactor effluent, shooting neutrons into things converting them into radioactive versions. Krypton-88 is beta and gamma emitter with a 2.84 hour half-life, and decays into radioactive rubidium-88 (beta and gamma) and then stable strontium-88. Krypton 89, with a life-life of 3.15 minutes, is a beta emitter and decays into beta- and gamma-emitting rubidium-89 (half life of 15.2 minutes), a solid. Rubidium-89, after a few hours, converts fully into beta-emitting long-lived strontium-89. Strontium-89 is also a bone-seeker and will irradiate the bone marrow (and other parts of our body) similar to strontium-90! "
@majia.. i don't believe it's lightning. I've been online (last night) and saw two of these. It was not raining or overcast (as far as I could see).
A few of us noticed the big light go out last night. That's around the time of these sightings. It's clearly not lighting.. I saw it. It pulsed from almost like ground centric and outward from the scene. If that makes sense.
Wotcha asked how "the heck can workers work there when this scary stuff is going on? The radiation must be incredibly high…" and I have been wondering the same. How is that possible, especially with increased visual activity, the crazy spikes in Iodine-131, etc.? Thanks for the images. I have nightmares about that black dust/smoke and now it is over 200 miles away.
Partial analysis here..
The being beams can be observed in the "pit" "worklight" area.
At approx :15 throught :20..notice the beams coming in on the right..the CSFP…
"It's" huge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhKxqFzuITc&feature=plcp
@Heart of the Rose, the "beams" or disruption of the lights seems to be from Reactor 4? Kind of looks like it. Beams can not be good, and the color/lightening..is ionized air from ??? Reactor 4? Just my observations..
Lots of releases coming from the multiple little chimneys on the tented reactor #1. Especially the far right corner. On full screen I observed greenish and pink/purple steamy stuff.

Hi Nuckelchen, I was wondering whether you were having some great time off. But of course, there will be no such thing for us all considering the ongoing fukushiteria. I hope the beloved admin grants your request. With love. FULL LIFE
@majia..No..I'm unaware of the geometry argument.
Material+catalyst..combined in an uncontrolled a situation.
I am simply documenting.. uncontrolled fission and critical chain reaction.
It's been going on a long time to be looking for it now.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwgMAAUtQQY&feature=related
The R2 light show..its similar to what can some times be seen over Fukushima II (in the middle of the screen on the right corner)-you see those flashes in the air over the reactors. Serious emissions I believe.
And the weather is fine, with a 6.2 mile visibility and FEW CLOUDS..
So the "Fukushima FOG" is unique..and scary. Is the corium near the 'break thru' levels with ground water or ??
Unless I missed it, I'm curious why there was not more discussion and speculation about what is going on behind the large light. There have been video captures when the light was off, and large 'vertical illuminations' (maybe torches), are observed, in the background behind the large light, where possibly a 'waste treatment facility', or 'common spent fuel pool facility' is located.
Johnny Blade was the first to speculate, back in December, that these 'vertical illumination' were possibly torch incenerators.
What are these things going on in the background? How has TEPCO been able to get away with this possible open-air inceneration without any fuss about it? Have any of the Japanese language blogs offered any further insight?
Maybe whatever remains in the onsite current spent fuel pools is being dealt with in such open-air incenerators? If so, what are the emmissions from these?
I read recently about a debate over whether radioactive contamination can be transmuted into something less toxic through chemical processes, such as burning.
I accidentally stumbled on a post by someone who seemed to know what they were talking about stating that this kind of transmutation has not been proven to work and is a false hope.
If your hypothesis is correct about incineration of radioactive debris, it may be rationalized by this idea of transmutation,
even if the real goal and effect are simply to make the pollution go elsewhere as it lofts high up into the jet stream because of its heat (a point noted by Arnie Gunderson)
It may be used to create heat to keep the radioactive gasses from falling directly on site? I can't really comment on the light… Other that it likely is an important function to daily operations. It is likely not a "worklight" and it could be anything from an incinerator to a radiation / magnet?
I mention a rad mag. Mainly because as the emissions have elevated on several occasions, the light seems to appear more immense… Which makes me feel that it in some way counters the fogs lethality on site…
In the above video, they appear to have the camera iris wide open at times, giving the appearance of daylight conditions sometimes in this video segment. Starting at 12:20, we see a large 'illuminator' directly under the 'J' (in the TBN/JSS logo). Is this a 'torch' incenerator?
well ADMIN

On the earlier TBS timelapses there were flashes: 2012.05.29_21.51–22.51(TBS_JNN) such as @ 0.14in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-XX4nA7pEY&feature=channel&list=UL The lights gradually disappeared but flashes can still be seen – such as @ 1.45, 2.38 in
Probably why we can't see anything on the TBS cam right now – just a 'whiteout'. How the heck can workers work there when this scary stuff is going on? The radiation must be incredibly high – I doubt they can predict somewhat safer periods in which to work, but hope they can.

Wow!
What is going on in that second link?
That is strange.
It appears to pulse like a fire would but I cannot figure out where the source is.
Furthermore, it does not look like smoke eclipsed the view, does it?
STRANGE

Just watched the first video.
That steam/smoke (ain't fog) that rises up is scary.
We've seen emissions from this area before but I don't think we've come to any agreement on the source, correct?

Do you think the latest purple flashes are lightning or do you think they might be beta flares or some weird combination?

@majia.. i don't believe it's lightning.

Let us hope that the purple and orange lights are not from the CSFP.
Does anyone remember seeing these purple lights before?
If they are simply from lightning (alone) we would probably have seen them last year at this time.

@Heart of the Rose, the "beams" or disruption of the lights seems to be from Reactor 4? Kind of looks like it. Beams can not be good, and the color/lightening..is ionized air from ??? Reactor 4? Just my observations..

<snip>
“From looking at the water level (60cm), it is obvious that the PCV and suppression chamber are severely damaged.
It is very likely that a new heating mass is generated from recriticality. We can not tell exactly what is happening inside of PCV. We can never deny the possibility of recriticality. ”
There looks to be something on top of the roof now, at the righthand side. Looks like R2 is 'cooking'.

Wideawake
The video you posted sure made me "wide awake"!
Very strange. I've not seen anything like that on the Tepco webcam before.
In October, Potrblog discussed a cycle of neutron feast and famine occurring
http://pissinontheroses.blogspot.com/search?q=devil
They warned then that the process might ultimately result in a critical chain that did not get poisoned.
Recall that Tepco has been injecting nitrogen into unit 2 since last summer.
Is there a reason why that would no longer work?
Anyone able to hazard a guess about the probability of a critical chain occurring?
Most commentators here have seen that as unlikely.
For instance, Joy's greatest concern has been the corium reaching the ocean water.
Report Comment
@ majia…I don't recall a lot of posters saying a critical chain reation was unlikely.
Report Comment
..reaction..on the contrary…many of us have been here defining it.

You know that geometry argument that has been made over and over again…
The argument that the density of the atoms is not enough to maintain a critical chain.
I have absolutely no idea and my guess is that this situation is so beyond any other ever experienced that no one else knows for sure either…
However, it seems to me that it doesn't have to explode to poison us beyond anything previously imagined
An explosion would sure wake up the world.
On the other hand, since an explosion might mean the plant gets abandoned completely, it might be the end of the world as we know it, as well…

@majia..No..I'm unaware of the geometry argument.

I am simply documenting.. uncontrolled fission and critical chain reaction.

Report Comment
I read recently about a debate over whether radioactive contamination can be transmuted into something less toxic through chemical processes, such as burning.
I accidentally stumbled on a post by someone who seemed to know what they were talking about stating that this kind of transmutation has not been proven to work and is a false hope.
If your hypothesis is correct about incineration of radioactive debris, it may be rationalized by this idea of transmutation,
even if the real goal and effect are simply to make the pollution go elsewhere as it lofts high up into the jet stream because of its heat (a point noted by Arnie Gunderson)
Report Comment
*incinerator
Report Comment

Report Comment
Certainly is odd. In the video at 12:20 thru 13:15. There are other lights flashing around it. Which gives some reference as to it's size. Very large!
It looks like a small sunburst, like in an explosion, but it sustains similar to a flare for about 40 seconds.
Guessing… accident while transporting fissionable material. (?)
I am certain if the news did report this they would say "No animals were injured and there is no further concern."
They would be correct about the 'no animals injured' part, because they're mostly already all dead.
