Sorry Arnie…I call that radioactive hydrovolcanic underground steam as described by Ralph Lapp in his invention of the term China Syndrome.
What is interesting is a discussion from the conspiracy theorists who have postulated the NRC helps "regulate" popular Wikipedia entries about nuclear accidents and issues.
Take for example the current entry for China Syndrome as of June 16, 2012:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Syndrome
Read it and then comapre it with this archived version of Wikipedia's China Syndrome article for March 12, 2011 (one day post-Fukushima):
http://www.agriculturedefensecoalition.org/sites/default/files/file/nuclear/14PTZ_2011_Wikipedia_March_12_2011_China_Syndrome_Result_of_Nuclear_Meltdown_Also_Note_1979_Movie_by_Same_Name_Website_March_12_2011.pdf
SP: A complete section was redacted from the March 2011 version:
Excerpt from the redacted document in….To Be continued:
http://www.agriculturedefensecoalition.org/sites/default/files/file/nuclear/14PTZ_2011_Wikipedia_March_12_2011_China_Syndrome_Result_of_Nuclear_Meltdown_Also_Note_1979_Movie_by_Same_Name_Website_March_12_2011.pdf
Report Comment
Continued…sorry for the double URL…damn iPhone…
Redacted section originally in the March 12, 2011 Wikipedia entry for "China Syndrome":
Scientific explanation
The 'China Syndrome' refers to the most drastically severe meltdown a nuclear reactor could possibly achieve. In this case, the reactor would reach the highest level of supercriticality for a sustained period of time, resulting in the melting of its support infrastructure.
The uranium in the core would behave in a similar manner to a delta-class fire, self-sustaining temperatures in excess of 2000°C. Since these temperatures would melt all materials around it, the reactor would sink due to gravity, effectively boring a hole through the reactor compartment's floor.[5]
The China syndrome becomes fictional in the hypothesis of it boring a hole from the United States to China, or any other part of the world (the opposite side of the earth from the USA is the Indian Ocean, except for a section of northern Montana, Hawaii and sections of Northern Alaska, central Colorado, whose antipodes are Ile Saint-Paul, Ile Amsterdam, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, northern
Namibia and Antarctica, respectively).
Most obviously it is impossible because the Earth's gravity would only pull it towards the core of the planet and no further.
To Be Continued (the best is yet to come!)
Report Comment
Last section of China Syndrome article redacted from March 12, 2011 version in Wikipedia:
"Furthermore, were the molten reactor fuel to
reach the planetary mantle, the actual environmental effect would likely be low; the radioactive material
would disperse by convection throughout the mantle, which is in any case kept liquid by natural nuclear decay. However, it is likely that the uranium core would not exceed more than 10 meters of 'boring' due to natural passive safety. The surrounding ground beneath the reactor would absorb the heat and transfer it conductivity to the surrounding area, thus preventing the ground directly beneath the core from
'melting'.[5][6]
This manner of spreading heat convectively through the ground is proposed for use in General Atomics' Gas Turbine Modular Helium Reactor for regular operation and passive safety, which aims to eliminate the possibility of a meltdown.[7]
SP: Ah ha! Now we have possibly NRC's erroneous pre-Fukushima theory of how corium would behave and it's dead wrong!
10 meters of barrier does not stop 100-ton chunks of nuclear fuel! Back to the drawing board you Dr. Frankensteins!

100-150 meters maybe?
i live here on a top of mountain, just a small one with 405 meter NN.

but i'm here on the highest point in the way westside, what means after some hundert km comes the atlantic and there is no mountain between us.
however,
such strange night-views of darkness and light, dark steam and white clouds i've never ever seen in my own skywatching life:
http://youtu.be/Q2qjB705Mzk
Report Comment
Nuck,
The clouds and smoke effects happen because of focal distances and relationship to the lens. When focussed on a distant light object that become shrouded by steam/fog and begins to cast the light through the water droplets suspended in the air and another steam/fog bank rolls into the foreground, because that new newer steam/fog bank is closer by hundreds of feet to the camera, thus out of focus and is not picking up the casting light source, it will appear dark… smokey. It is an optical effect we're witnessing due to distance ratios in the night sky.
p.s.
This is also why, on overcast and overly steamy/foggy days, the JNN cam is totally fogged over. They're focussed on a fixed point behind the fog in the foreground.
Camera men like that ought NOT be employed to run live cameras of global disasters… IMO.
On a side note:
Sorry about your pal.
Report Comment
Max are you saying the smokey looking stuff coming up from the plant is an optical illusion?
I do not dispute that the light and distance may impact perceptions of darkness but I am confident that steam has been coming from the reactor buildings and the ground near the reactor buildings
Moreover, there are days when the steam is clearly more brownish than other days.
I would appreciate it if you would please clarify your comment.
thanks

I think what Max1 may be referring to is this video. http://youtu.be/Q2qjB705Mzk

TBS/JNN has Bright flashes inside the building area of Reactor 4. Good catch Max1! This started happening after the 6.4 EQ, could be due to being distrubed..or is someone trying to WELD down the 60 ton lid on the SPF with very large charges? Most likely we really dont want to see these white flares/flashes happening. Comments welcome on what you see…
