The previous Fukushima Webcam Discussion Thread can be found here:

This thread is for discussing matters related to the webcam(s) at Fukushima Daiichi.

UPDATE (via Nuckelchen): “Please note the ‘jst’ time of your observation. Also, describe as best as possible, what you see. Using North, South, East, and West to describe locations. Be specific whenever possible. This may sometimes be the ONLY record we have of such events.”

Sparky….is there another way to contact Harlan about the Geiger Counter? That link isn't working. I appreciate all your help! 🙂

  • Idea… a challenge.

Create a 30 second Fukushima Awareness Video.
    Using stills or whatever.
Make it like a COMMERCIAL if you can.

Post it to youtube and leave the link here or message me on youtube.
I will create a playlist on my youtube channel that contains the link to your video message.

There are no yt commercials associated with my channel. No money being made here, just getting the message out.

I figure if they can sell us inefficient cars and floor polish that prevents waxy buildup using commercials, maybe 30 second spots will help get the message across. Maybe one will go viral. Don't know unless you try it. What do you got to lose?

    My submission:
    30 seconds Fukushima Awareness Videos
    Now on PLAYLIST

    30 seconds ONLY (or less)
    re: Fukushima Awareness
What is it you would say to someone if you only had 30 seconds to do it in.

    Good luck! 🙂

Today I can only view and comment in the webcam thread when I am logged in. Has admin changed things and I've missed this?
Time is 03.24 JST on 19th December and the TBS/JNN cam view is pixelated out, just a small white dot can be seen. The cam has that familiar kick to it every so often. Meanwhile the Tepsham view looks its usual calm self 🙂

The Webcam forum is working for me again. Maybe our Enenews Administrator was able to fix the glitch, assuming that's all the problem was.

Of note, I placed the following msg. re: an alternative method to view the cams and post results on the "JP Burning" forum. Perhaps this can be a back-up plan in case this goes down again for an extended period of time or permanently.

**WebcamWatchers!** Alternative Forum. This "JP Burning" forum is sparse and may be a good place to continue to post your Webcam observations.

Method: In a separate browser, open one or more links from the (formerly operational) Webcam links below. Then open and log-in to Enenews as usual but post on this "JP Burning" forum. Maybe starting your post with "@WebCam", then add your message as usual. This will at least alert others that the content is Webcam-related.

Whatever the cause, accidental or intentional, we should NOT let this stop the conversation and flow of information. When the original Webcam forum is operational, then someone can alert others and redirect folks back to the original Webcam forum.

Good idea, although not much to talk about when the cam is smoked/fogged/clouded out. Im starting to think that tepco is smoking it out intentionally, it just seems so perfectly uniform. The sound is still on, you can hear that its windy so maybe its just normal rain and clouds but then if you look at tamioka and futaba the weather doesn't look too bad. I hated getting the commercials on tbs so I found ustream and for $3.99 a month you can watch commercial free. That makes it possible to listen to the birds or occasional geiger counts for a few minutes without blowing out my eardrums when a gevalia commerical comes on.

I also find that ustream is not broadcasting the stream universally, I have a htpc so sometimes I put tbs on my 50" tv and if I just connect on the other living room PC a few times, it will connect a few seconds behind the TV. So then I can watch the tv while Im doing something else and if I see something interesting I have 3 or 4 seconds to get to computer and screencap it.

Yesterday, I captured shots of the spiderwebbing effect when it appeared to be clear and not raining or snowing. Maybe there was high humidity or a misty rain on site that doesn’t show on the camera. I have seen the rain splash on the lens distorting the view and thus had dismissed the spiderwebbing effect. Yesterday’s captures were not as distorted by rain splash like what was seen last night. Do all rain/snow events produce the spiderwebbing effect? Is there spiderwebbing without rain/snow? The atmosphere at the plant may contain radioactive gases not normally found in our air. Some of these gases are Radioluminescent.

“Radioluminescence is the phenomenon by which light is produced in a material by bombardment with ionizing radiation such as beta particles.”
“Radioluminescence is also sometimes seen around high power radiation sources, such as nuclear reactors and radioisotopes.”

    Water is a neutron moderator:

“In nuclear engineering, a neutron moderator is a medium that reduces the speed of fast neutrons, thereby turning them into thermal neutrons capable of sustaining a nuclear chain reaction involving uranium-235. “

So the question remains, are the spiderwebs an indication of criticality further distorted by rain/snow or just the various light sources reflected and distorted in water droplets?

    • Kassandra

      Well stated

I think this is a critical question

      • Horse Horse

The site has radioactive gases in the atmosphere. A rain storm starts developing. Higher humidity keeps radioactive gases from dissipating. Water acts as neutron moderator (Cherenkov Effect. The charged particles emitted by the reactor pass through the dielectric medium faster than the phase velocity of light through the medium. The molecules become polarized and quickly return to their ground state, emitting visible blue light.) Certain gases (tritium) or particulates, (actinium, uranium) could fluoresce when hit with ionizing radiation. Onsite visual effect may be subtle. CCD camera may be more sensitive to overload from higher charges showing as light. Rain droplets start falling further distorting the camera images. Note the black and rust brown smudges forming and rinsing off the lens. Just how nasty is that air. No way to tell if it’s a smudge on the lens or a dark cloud of gas/smoke in the field of view. Rain clears the particulates and radioactive gasses from the atmosphere, reducing the spider webbing light displayed in the camera view.

Keep in mind trying to define terms:

"When the author penetrated the mass of scientific articles in various fields of luminescence, the result was overwhelming confusion. The variation in terminology, sometimes expressing exactly the same physical processes, made comparisons between different articles difficult. During these literature studies, the author encountered at least 10 different terms denoting the identical process of converting light energy from imparted x-ray energy. In the study of phosphors/scintillators, it is therefore important to clearly define the terms and parameters used."

  • lsmiaka

Here's the video I posted above + another later on of the way these things behave for those who haven't seen them yet. (12/19/13 JST 19:06-19:10)
-19:06:38 Two artifacts. One in extreme lower left corner, arrow shaped; one to its right as a curved line.
-19:06:43 Arrow morphs; line shifts from diagonal to straight line and begins to blob.
-19:07:13 Arrow disappears; brief multiline filaments in lower center appear.
-19:06:17 Center filaments distorted by raindrop (still visible).
-19:08:53 Filaments appear on right of blob.
-19:10:25 Blob starts to recede; filaments near blob recede. (12/19/13 JST 19:25-19:35)
-Starts out with one straight line in lower left.
-19:26:24 Arrow shape appears in the lower right just as the original straight line temporarily obscured by raindrop before immediately reappearing.
-19:28:26 Straight line grew longer/taller & jumped a couple of times; starts to behave more like a blob than a line; arrow still there.
-19:29:09 Arrow begins to 'lower' itself out to recede out of frame; lower left now looks like a jellyfish.
-19:33:48 Lower left jellyfish has been flattening out & suddenly jumps to a flat line again.
-19:34:38 3rd appears near base of tower, lower center; more like a 'spiderweb'.
-19:35:25 Lower left artifact and center lower disappear.

  • Webcam thread finally up! It has been down all day for me.

What is going on with the webcam thread and is it related to the utterly strange phenomena visible on the TEPCO web cam?

    This is an urgent question.

I'm hoping that the 'spider webs' visible even during daylight now (off and on) for 48 hours, are simply camera artifacts from the rain. Here are samples from today:

I'm hoping that the webcam thread dysfunction is completely unrelated.

I don't know. I think we need to figure this out. Quickly.

Are these images all a function of raindrops on the lens? Or is there some plasma effect from the highly radioactive buildings in the rain?

Is the Enenews webcam forum being deliberately hijacked or is it simply crashing from some random technical glitch?

Majia, hard to say but lets keep our energy positive and our persistence undying!

    TBS CAM 12:49PM JST
I can just barely make out a faint silhouette of the plant on the TBS cam now. Fukushima weather report says winds are 15mph or so but it sure seems like more up on that hill, it's practically raining sideways

Timestamp 20.12 JST 20 December – looks like something is being sprayed onto R4 from far righthand side of screen in TBS cam view. Just to the right of the upright structure that holds the cover over R4, IYKWIM. Just watch to the far right of R4. What the heck is that?
Meanwhile, I can still only see the webcam comments when logged in. Can't log in on the webcam page though 🙁 I wonder if it's to stop Tepcamshammers from seeing comments?

  • mungo mungo

    actually, it looks like waves..

All reactor buildings show emissions. Looking up at the laptop screen on the JNN webcam site, Reactor 1 shows a lot more red and orange flares. And Reactor 4 shows flaring of emissions as well. Not sure what this means as to any increases in radiation, but certainly workers will and are seriously impacted by this dangerous situation. Reactor 4 is where they are trying to remove the 204 NEW FUEL cells..only 22 have been removed; this is also where the damaged fuel was removed from. So the increases seen at Reactor 4 can not be good. Comments or collected videos on this reactor will document the situation better.

It appears the tepco webcam was once streamed in much higher resolution. The last minute of this video show more detail than visible these days:

  • nuckelchen nuckelchen

    @ blue:
yap, not in much higher resolution but tepco had crashed the livestream from 640 x 480 pixels into 640 x ??? (436 or so) pixels some months ago.
without changinging the viewed pixels, what means that we see a frame that looks "zusammengedrückt".
    tepco push a 640 x 480 frame into a 640 x 436 or whatevers frame.

but what you see on details at the ending in your posted video looks for me a bitly "color-edited" or like i had named it : "videomizered"

the perverted is however that in reality
the less resolution all the more eye !

a two layered video, tepco-fukulong records were the colored ones and mine records of the same times were the "normal" look-a-like.
mixed together it looks like an eye-opening bad trip:

Hi folks, Many Enenewsers are still having problems accessing the Webcam forum. Please note that 'CamWatchers that cannot get in to the main Webcam forum are posting to the "What to do about Japan Burning…" forum. These posts are flagged "@webcam". Until this is fixed 'Cammers on this forum may need to toggle back and forth to view comments and post to those unable to access the Webcam forum.

The Enenews Administrator has been notified via this website several times by several users. I think this problem has been going on for about 4 days now. If anyone has an alternative means to contact the Administrator, PLEASE urge him/her to fix this as soon as possible.
