Nuclear waste 'may be blighting 1,000 UK sites'

"Hundreds of sites across England and Wales could be contaminated with radioactive waste from old military bases and factories, according to a new government report.

Up to 1,000 sites could be polluted, though the best guess is that between 150 and 250 are, says a report on contaminated land by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), released last month, but previously unreported. (…)"

  • How the FDA's absurd radiation standards could be leading us to our slaughter

… levels of Fukushima fallout were being found in U.S. food and drinking water. … There are a number of ways to explain the absurdity of the FDA's DILs. A DIL is short for 'Derived Intervention Level,' which is a measurement of a large amount of radioactivity in food that is set by the FDA. The FDA explains on its website that a DIL "does not define a safe or unsafe level of exposure." So, what is the purpose of the DIL?

…The purpose of the DIL is to convince Americans that eating slightly radioactive foods won't do shit to your health over the long term. The implied message is that, like Hiroshima, radiation only hurts you in big honking quantities. (That also didn't pan out to be true for 'black rain' residents in the suburbs of Hiroshima). …

Uh huh… "Safe" trace amounts of radiation…

The results are in! Vital Choice Wild Seafood & Organics, the leading source for fast home delivery of the world’s finest wild seafood from Alaska and the North Pacific, today announced that tests conducted at their request by an independent laboratory show that none of their seafood is contaminated by radiation released from the compromised nuclear plants at Fukushima, Japan.

After the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima last March, the team at Vital Choice Wild Seafood & Organics wanted to ensure that they were taking every safety precaution possible for their customers. Addressing a growing concern for potential radiation affecting the nation’s seafood, Vital Choice contracted Eurofins, the world leader in food testing, to test their wild Alaskan salmon and North Pacific seafood for radioactive elements. Vital Choice is proud to announce that the test results proved that all of their seafood products are completely safe for human consumption… The trace amounts that may have been present in rare cases fell below the extremely low, very safe levels detectable with current technology.

Moved from Japan 40 year thread to Nuclear Geneneral:

SP: Certainly seems feasible. But sudden athlete deaths have happened long before Fukushima with athletes so we will certainly never know even if he had an advanced autopsy (cesium in heart muscle would never be released thtough this country's media). But I am inclined to ascribe the duck quaking theory also like Stock.

Condolences to the family in Norway…huge tragedy.

I do know yesterday was a very bad pollution day in America. A friend in Boulder, Colorado told me she had a massive headache two days ago (about the time of the Mitsui petro fire plume passed across that area. My headache Monday and Tuesday was intense. Hope Bobby1 can stay inside more than I did because the cloud should be finsihing up the east coast today and headed on across to the Europeans. Meterologists are as backward as witch doctors when it comes to predicting toxic atmospheric global plumes. But some naked apes are much smarter.

I agree with those who doubt the UN is the right agency to look to for hope: when it comes to saving lives. They have had a dark agenda in that area.

So where to put all this energy more productively? Let's think on that.

Bilderberg is coming up at the end of the month. That's one good candidate for us in terms of sleuthing and pressure. Check out Jim Tucker and infowars.com I don't know what's up with Estulin these days.

Also the NATO Summit–we should not lose sight of the agendas that do not have our interests at heart.

I do wonder about the PTB not being concerned about their own exposure–in where they travel and in where they live. Do they have a secret antidote? Perhaps we should not underestimate the second A in DARPA?

Profound gratitude to all here for their deep caring,

Thank you, Anne! What an EXCELLENT resource, not just for the map of U.S. SFPs, but the report by the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, showing the lack of a clear U.S. policy on both the safe storage and transport of highly radioactive spent fuel.

We are failing to address this hugely important problem our nation faces, (as Robert Alvarez states, we are "kicking the can down the road" instead of addressing the problem). Why? It is really difficult to solve, given we lack the technology or means to safely store and transport highly radioactive waste.

"Evaluation of the Technical Basis for Extended Dry Storage and Transportation of Used Nuclear Fuel, United States Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, December 2010:"

      http://www.nwtrb.gov/reports/eds_execsumm.pdf (145 pp, 5MB)

      Conclusions

"The technical information currently available, together with the experience gained to date in the dry storage of used fuel, demonstrates that used fuel can be safely stored in short term and then transported for additional storage, processing or repository disposal, at least for low burnup fuel. However, additional information is required in order to demonstrate, with similarly high confidence, that high burnup fuel can be safely transported and any type of used fuel can be stored in dry storage facilities for extended periods without the fuel degrading to the extent that it may not perform satisfactorily during continued storage and subsequent transportation…

Wow, the Eureka, CA casked spent fuel pool is sitting right next to the ocean! This is a heavily laced earthquake area and there is the Juan de Fuca subduction zone out in the ocean that could bring in a 100 ft. tsunami. The Juan de Fuca will go off sometime and these casks are at risk. I shouldn't be surprised at this incompetence of placing a SPF cask next to the ocean after Fukushima but I am. Bet there are other casks sitting on earthquake faults in the US.

If a person were experiencing health effects that were caused by radiation, how would a doctor determine the cause? Let's say a person in the Midwest had a chronic cough for months. How would their doctor test to see if it was a result of radiation or some other cause ? Are there blood tests that can detect relatively low levels of radiation ( low compared to lethal doses?)
I saw a report recently that said that deaths from pneumonia were very high over this Winter. I think most people who comment here would say that there is some connection to the high levels of Fukushima radiation that have been detected in Hawaii. Let's say that a doctor or researcher sincerely wanted to investigate, what would they do ?
    Thanks

    Hi Enenewsers,

Not sure if this is the place for Fuku discussions, but I'll post anyway. I was hoping to get some informed opinions of the points below. These are just my ideas.
    1) Arnie Gunderson showed us the photos of the pool with the tops of the racks exposed, back in March last year. Now I am guessing that these rods had to be sitting in some water, otherwise they would have been on fire? Does that mean that it would take a complete loss of water to cause a fire?
    2) If the rods had no water surrounding them, why would SFP4 collapsing be a big deal? The rods didn't catch fire then when they were dry, what difference would a collapsed pool/building make?
    3) Gunderson says in an interview that if the rods were to catch fire, it would be impossible to put it out with water because that would cause explosions. This would mean that if the numerous reports of the pool being on fire at some stage were true then all the fuel has been on fire/melted?
    4) From those aerial shots showing the exposed rods, it seems impossible that water could be pumped back into that area to cover the rods at a depth shown in the newly released TEPCO vids of the pool. Are these videos of other pools?

    Thanks, much appreciated!

Safe is the thing that we are looking for. A place with maybe a vibrant expat population. We are also open to suggestions or ideas…… I firmly believe that if the fuel pool ever tips, there will be large rush of radiation refugees pouring from the north. We want to be at the front of the wave. We would even consider looking into buying a place at first to either rent out in the time being or maybe move down sooner. I would like to thing of it as a "lifeboat".

It's truly difficult to know what is happening. I think you have to decide now to stay or go. I think waiting might be easier now but more difficult later. I guess it really depends on what you believe. Some days I wake up and I don't believe the world is being contaminated, that it's all been exagerated, if I just don't do certain things it will be OK. Then other times I feel restless if I don't have a flight ready to leave…this is a hell of terrible situation.

The front of the wave would be when the fuel pool falls over. I belive that the mainstream media will take there time on reporting this event. There will be a four or five day time period when the winds make it over here. I would guess the smart thing to do is to identify a place that you want to go, check out flight times, make sure your passport is up to date. Think about what to do with your world that will be left behind. Try to come up with something to help yourself in the new land. Congratulations…you will be a radiation refugee!! One of the hordes I imagine that will swamp the southern hemisphere. This is only a start. One could also just hunker down and take what is coming to the northern hemisphere. Watch all the sheeple scurry around with there new awareness of there predicament. Really sad that would be.

In the first place, you won't be able to buy a ticket because everyone will want to go at once. In the second place, the radiation might cause all who fly to get radiation sickness. When planes begin falling out of the sky, air travel will be grounded in any case. In the third place, the economy will tank, and your money won't be any good. It will look like a Mad Max movie all around the northern hemisphere. If you want to go, best go now.

Chernobyl; Animal Studies Show Radiation Is Still Harming Our Wild Companions
It seems that many countries, including the Russians, are not interested in knowing radiation levels in animals. They also do not seem to be interested in knowing what effects low level radiation has on animals, insects and birds in areas such as the 'exclusion zones' around Chernobyl. It seems that the only studies being done around Chernobyl have been performed by 'foreign' researchers coming in from other countries. This is curious in and of itself.
Why does the media seem to be promoting the Chernobyl exclusion zone as a 'Nature Reserve', full of a rebounding population of apparently 'happy and healthy' animals? Why are they not disclosing that these animals all have high levels of toxic radiation inside of them?
Why are there no studies …

"..There also does not seem to be any international agreement or standard about what is considered a 'safe' amount of radiation in wild game, or retail food and drinking water. In Germany, unsafe radiation is considered to be any Cesium found at 600 Bq per kilogram or more.

In the UK the level of unsafe radiation is almost double that amount; at 1,000 Bq per kilogram Cesium 137. Until February of 2012, they authorities were testing all sheep and other animals consumed for their meat or exported out of 'control areas' found to have elevated Cesium levels due to Chernobyl.

However, that testing and contaminated meat exclusion program has recently been dropped completely, so people in the UK can now eat radioactively contaminated sheep or other meat, with no radiation measurement or warning labels at all. This lack of testing also means that this contaminated meat can be exported abroad…"

800 out of 3000 Fukushima workers have already died but staff at Tohoku University School of Medicine & Hospital are under gag order. The patients are initially treated at Tohoku University hospital but transferred to another hospital in Niigata because no treatment can save them. :(

    3rd Annual
    Nuclear Power Uprate Conference
June 20-21, 2012, Hilton Charlotte Executive Park, North Carolina, US
The Nuclear Power Uprate Conference is back for its 3rd year and is the most focused power uprate meeting for the US & International nuclear industry. Held in Charlotte, NC, the 2012 show will showcase more world class speakers, crucial industry debates and executive attendees than ever before!

NRC Updates: Understand the current status regarding the impact on Uprates from Fuel Performance and Containment Accident Pressure and how this may affect your project execution

In times of austerity, uprating nuclear power is the answer. Exelon has estimated a power uprate investment cost of $2.2m-$2.5m per added megawatt, about half that of a new reactor. The US NRC expects 24 power uprate applications over the next 4 years, including 11 extended power uprates and 13 measurement uncertainty recapture uprates, thus creating a potential market of $25 billion.

FUKUSHIMA PRIMED FOR WORLD WIDE DISASTER!

The radioactive Fukushima Genie is out of the bottle and is primed to accomplish a worldwide disaster. If the roof of Reactor building #4 collapses, a building that is now seismically rated at zero, a pool of 1563 spent fuel rods perched 100 feet above the ground would also collapse ~ resulting in a gusher of global radiation that would put most of the world’s human and biological populations at severe risk.

The greatest and most dangerous on going cover up in the world today is not the official 9/11 cover up (now into its 11th year); it is not the supposed assassination of Bin Laden by Navy Seals last year (an operation with no confirmed body, no video and completely staged as a re-election gimmick as we are now witnessing); but instead, it is the unspoken on going conspiracy of silence regarding the spreading worldwide nuclear radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011.

If there will be a history recording of these events you mention I wonder how it will be recorded. Will it show the twin towers coming down, then the lies that accompanied the event will perhaps play out. Will the spectators, our descandants wonder how we could have believed the lies? Will they turn on us and call us cowards. Will they blame us for the events that followed, that we didn't organize, and those who did were looked at as freaks. Who will be blamed for this mess….we may not look so innocent in the future if we act so cowardly now….lets stand up to the USA goverment and ask why the radiation detectors were turned off, why the old reactors keep going???and many other questions.

Cook nuclear reactor unit shuts down

    Wednesday, May 02, 2012 8:48 a.m. EDT

BRIDGMAN (WKZO) — There has been a series of problems with the Palisades Plant in Covert Township and now one of the reactors at the Cook nuclear reactor has shut down because of a generator problem. It happened as the reactor was being powered back up after a scheduled fueling outage.

Cook spokesperson Bill Schalk says that some kind of problem occurred, which caused a unit to shut down automatically. He says they are trying to determine what went wrong. Schalk says that all safety systems operated as they should have, adding that customers should notice no difference in service.

There's no estimate as to when the unit could be ready to go back online.

Thanks, Jebus. That's strange. I didn't see that "event" listed among the reactor events from May 2 on the NRC website today. Wonder when they will be updating their website?

      http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/event-status/event/en.html

But I did notice a couple other reports of events at Limerick in PA, at Ft. Calhoun in NE:

The description of the Ft. Calhoun event stated:

"While investigating operating experience from another station it was determined that Fort Calhoun Station (FCS) is subject to similar conditions. The operating experience involved setpoint drift of safety related pressure switches beyond what had been accounted for in the station's safety analyses.

"Following investigation and evaluation, it was determined that pressure switches that provide safety related signals for high containment pressure to the reactor protection system (RPS) and engineered safeguards actuation circuitry may be similarly affected at FCS. The impact of the potential drift was evaluated, and it was determined that neither RPS nor the engineered safeguard circuitry may actuate at the required containment pressure of 5 psig. An evaluation determined that the actuation may not occur until slightly higher than the required pressure. Other systems are currently being evaluated to see if this same condition applies.

"The station is in MODE 5, refueling shutdown condition, and there is no immediate safety concern."

San Diego Radiation Monitor Not Working During Fukushima Crisis, Audit Reveals
    May 3, 2012

An April 19 audit by the Inspector General of the United States Environmental Protection Agency has revealed that major components of the government's radiation monitoring and reporting system, including an air sampling device in San Diego, were not functioning during last year's Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown in Japan.
"On March 11, 2011, at the time of the Japan nuclear incident, 25 of the 124 installed RadNet monitors, or 20 percent, were out of service for an average of 130 days," auditors said.
San Diego's monitoring device was one of 11 said to be out of service for more than 140 days, according to the findings.
The San Diego outage began on October 26, 2010, and apparently …

A little booklet, that explains how radioactive materials disintegrate, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology which were distributed to school children teaches disinformation. "Once the radionuclides disintegrate, it becomes a different substance and ceases to emit harmful radioactive rays" (Not quite true as it can increase the half-life of some of them!)

    Good morning to all,

Jill, dear friend to us all, as I have mentioned before the good doctor is now living in Brazil with his family. In earlier articles he predicted many would end up moving south.

I am so very grateful for all the expat info. and offers to help. Many Moons, can you tell us where in Brazil you are located?

I would have to drive to South America (from the southwest U.S.) and the dangers of driving through Mexico alone are staggering.

I am putting it all in God's hands, as I believe I will receive guidance, and then the means to carry it out.

    May God help us all,
