Interesting Jill…that Ranger Mike site led me to another interesting statistic…way back from March 24th 2011 (13 days after Fukushima began the death spiral):

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20285-fukushima-radioactive-fallout-nears-chernobyl-levels.html

    Excerpt:

"Austrian researchers have used a worldwide network of radiation detectors – designed to spot clandestine nuclear bomb tests – to show that iodine-131 is being released at daily levels 73 per cent of those seen after the 1986 disaster. The daily amount of caesium-137 released from Fukushima Daiichi is around 60 per cent of the amount released from Chernobyl."

SP: Ok…if I read that correctly the Austrians discovered that Fukushima emissions of the two bad boys radioiodine and cesium-137 were over 60% just compared to all the days (11) Chernobyl Unit 4 burned.

Fukushima with 4 huge burning reactor units has been emitting toxins for another 390 days…what does that tell us?

Yes, some Fukushima days have been lighter for emissions than the burning/disappearing building days we recently witnessed once again. Yet, we have seen at least 30 or more heavy emission days.

The tonnage of nuclear fuel at Daiichi also dwarfs Chernobyl.

SO hows does Daiichi compare to Chernobyl?

Fukushima Daiichi emissions are 40 to 100 times greater than Chernobyl as of today (maybe more).

I think that is a sobering thought for the countries of the world anywhere within 10,000 miles downwind.

  • Japan Melts Down… Blubber?
    7 May 2012

TOKYO (SAPP) – After many years of international pressure to stop whaling, sources close to the prime minister of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda, have admitted that whaling has become a vital source of energy for the country. Members of Mr. Noda's inner circle have told the SAPP that whales are being harvested for their blubber to literally keep the lights on in Tokyo. We have also found that whale harvesting is increasing in an effort to meet the electrical demands of the country.

In March 2011, a major earthquake and tsunami caused irreparable damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plants owned and operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). Prior to the 9.0 magnitude earthquake, approximately 25 percent of Japan's electricity came from nuclear energy. That figure is now 0 percent, and it is …

A worker in the first hour of 311 crisis: " I saw all the pipes fixed to the wall shifting and ripping off.”…

SP: Thanks Anne…important quote for the debunking of the tsunami-did-it-all theorists.

Yes, it is true damage was done by an earthquake and a tsunami. To ascribe more damage to either is probably indefensible.

We will probably never determine if the earthquake alone could have set in motion triple melt-throughs. But the truth remains an act of nature (earthquake) set off another act of nature (tsunami) and both contributed to the potentially worst toxic industrial accident in the history of mankind.

That number 1 ranking may be hard to convince skeptics pointing to the 1984 Union Carbide pesticide blast in Bhopal or the 1921 Oppau explosion in Germany or the 37 years of mercury poisoning at Minamata. Chernobyl certainly among anti-nuclear folks holds the top spot for deaths and injuries.

The denial of civilian deaths and injuries is a great defense for Tepco because radiation deaths by longterm exposure are dismissed as frivolous by the nuclear industry. The isotopes are invisible for the most part and deaths by cancers may be laid on other human behaviors. But science is improving since 1986 and will continue to improve. Medical techniques in the future may be able to place a definitive association between radioactive fallout and human casualties.

    You be the judge:

Perhaps an example of why we will never hear the true radiation testing data, especially in medical tests of our bodies' exposure to man-made radiation from NPPs or other sources…?

    An article from 2001:

"Compensation begins for workers sickened at nuclear weapons plants"

Martha Alls thought she'd never see the day when the government would pay for what it did to her father — a former worker at the uranium enrichment plant in Paducah, Ky. But Alls' mother, Clara Harding, will receive a check for $150,000 — possibly as early as Tuesday — as part of a federal entitlement plan aimed at compensating sick nuclear weapons workers or their survivors.

"The Labor Department is running the new program, which officially begins Tuesday. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao calls it "an absolute priority." But the government hasn't always had that attitude."

"Before he died of cancer in 1980, Harding's bones were found to contain up to 34,000 times the expected concentration of uranium.

      (snip)

"The Energy Department has identified 317 sites that employed more than 650,000 people nationwide for nuclear weapons-related work during the Cold War."

Wow…317 sites??? That's a lot of places around the U.S. who had workers exposed to who-knows-how-much man-made nuclear radiation! :-(

      (snip):

"The agency initially thought 3,000 to 4,000 might receive compensation, but the accuracy of that estimate is unclear, in part because of poor record keeping. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the program will
cost roughly $2 billion over a decade."

Wonder how that program eventually worked out…How many people were ultimately compensated? Could be a good lesson to review for the upcoming Fuku fallout compensation claims we're sure to be seeing (and possibly participating in…)

WATK typed these pixels of light:

Wonder how that program eventually worked out…How many people were ultimately compensated?

        SP: http://www.dol.gov/owcp/energy/regs/compliance/charts/compensation_statistics_graphs.htm

Looking at the nuclear facilities listed you would probably think Oak Ridge or Hanford paid out the most claims. Nope! It is a facility people outside Tennessee would not guess (unless you are a historian).

Y-2 is the winner.. Biggest weapons manufacturer (and still is).

Back on June 3, 2011 I posted about the other compensation program… For downwinders. That might qualify a lot more now, but I doubt we will see a penny:

In October 1990, Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act which provides payments to individuals who contracted certain cancers and other serious diseases as a result of their exposure to radiation.
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act now allows downwinder victims in 21 counties in southern Utah, eastern Nevada and northern Arizona who suffer from any of 19 different cancers to receive up to $50,000. It will expire by law in 2022.
This link shows a counter updated every couple of days that keeps track of victims who have been compensated since April, 1992:

        http://www.justice.gov/civil/omp/omi/Tre_SysClaimsToDateSum.pdf
Despite making it damn near impossible under the law’s provisions to prove you or your family was injured by radiation it is significant that nearly 1.7 billion has been paid.

Wow! Thanks, Sickputer! That was quick! :-)

I had never seen this information in the links you provided. Interesting…

One thing that hit my eye IMMEDIATELY after viewing a few of the charts at the first link which show the companies who paid the most compensation, and the years and amount of compensation.

Did you notice anything? The payments were initially very minimal…that is, until 2008, the year President Obama took office. Appears to me like Bush and his regime didn't like the idea much of compensating people for their government-caused nuclear radiation illnesses…but things got much better once Obama got in office.

          Just my initial observations.

        • _ 34000 claims paid, Denied=unknown, Should have been paid=we'll never know

          1.7 bill divided by 50 thousand = 34000 (people!)

The sad followup to the story is that most of those people invested in real estate and wall street with their 50 thousand. :(

It is good to see our troops training with one another,” Cossa said. But “you can’t be an ally but not allow half of your ally’s navy to come into port.” U.S. acceptance of New Zealand’s anti-nuclear legislation would set a bad precedent, Cossa said. “If you say it is OK for New Zealand, then you have empowered the entire anti-nuclear movement in Japan,” he said.

Noooo….we CERTAINLY wouldn't want to do THAT, now would we? /sarc

Living less than 20 miles from the nation's (world's?) largest nuclear stockpile at the Bangor Trident base in the Puget Sound, I look forward to the day our world puts ALL these puppies to bed–for good! :-(

"May 4 Press Conference On Fukushima By Physicians For Social Responsibility"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMfMJQ6IHyY

"A press conference about the on-going, rarely publicized and still grave situation around the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, featuring a nuclear scientist from Japan, and first hand medical reports of clinical and on site observations in Japan related to the Fukushima radiological contamination, with discussion of the immediate needs to protect Japanese citizens now living in contaminated areas, for better monitoring of radioactive content of food, and for the cessation of incineration and burying of radioactive tsunami rubble throughout Japan.

Japanese Nuclear Scientist and Japanese and US medical doctors to discuss current radiological health conditions and concerns in Japan after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor catastrophe."

Very good talk from Andy Kanter. You should know that of every public professional figure that has spoken up about Fukushima, Gundersen, Caldicott, etc., Andy is the one who is most respected in the US medical establishment. When Dr. Kanter talks, you can be sure that the inner sanctum of decision-makers is listening.

I am glad that he brought up the point that the current contamination in Japan is a tiny fraction of the Fukushima radioactive release, and that most of it went over the Pacific toward North America.

Great..just great. Why HAZMAT? Does anyone think this debris is dangerous..OR "radioactive?" Think the answer is YES. Now if this debris is HAZMAT..what about the ocean waters which have carried this mess to the coastline? Think there is also a problem there as well! And with all the ongoing DUMPING of severe radioactive materials into the N. Pacific..this will continue for more than our lifetimes.
