**** As Europe’s biggest nuclear producer, France has closely monitored the Japanese disaster. Two French specialists decode Takahashi’s statement.
"Reactors are still in meltdown"
Stéphane Lhomme, head of the French anti-nuclear organisation l’Observatoire nucléaire, says that TEPCO is seriously playing down potential dangers. “Their declarations are over-confident, and moreover, simply not true,” he told FRANCE 24. “The plant is neither stable nor fragile.” Lhomme describes the current situation as “catastrophic. Even if the thermal power in the four damaged reactors has been considerably reduced, they are still in meltdown and therefore still noxious.” Speaking with an alarmed tone, he says “of course the global situation is slightly better than it was a year ago. But the corium, a lava-like fuel-containing material that lies at the bottom of the containers, remains a real problem.”
Fukushima one year on: a quest for viable energy
JAPAN
Fukushima one year on: a quest for viable energy
Lhomme argues that at several thousand degrees, this molten lava could break through the cask at any point and destroy the concrete beneath the container, reaching soil and water located beneath the surface. “If it comes into contact with water, the corium would spark a series of massive vapour cloud explosions,” warns Lhomme. ****

**** Authorities working round the clock
Thierry Charles, security director of the French Institute of Radio-Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), agrees that the remaining corium could pose a threat. “We don’t even know how much corium each cask contains,” he explains, “or how much could get through several metres of concrete.”
However, Charles is more optimistic than his colleague. “The plant is still leaking in some places and so remains fragile,” he admits. “But the situation can’t be compared with what it was a year ago. The Japanese authorities have already done plenty to tackle the problem. They have injected a cement substance into the floor of the plant, removed the debris, blocked off potential seepage points, cleaned the floors and dressed Reactor 1 in a metal cover in order to limit any fallout.”
Charles dismisses the global hysteria over radiation levels. “The main leakages happened from 12 to 25 March 2011,” he explains. “Except for caesium, most of the particles released only have a short lifespan. They lose half their strength very quickly, from within a few hours to eight days depending on the type of iodine. So except for the 30km surrounding the plan, we’re only at risk in the first few weeks after an accident.”
‘Decades before locals can move back’
Charles agrees that there is still work to do. The site must be progressively dismantled – a highly technical and expensive operation. ****

Lessons from Fukushima: new Greenpeace report on nuclear risks
February 28, 2012
“…In the latest report Greenpeace points that people were left to die in a hospital, abandoned by medical staff. People were sent to areas with higher radiation levels. Others were told to stay indoors but without assistance for days, only to run out of food, water and fuel for their eventual escape. Some were told you are safe where you are, only to hear the government admit weeks later that they weren’t safe at all and needed to evacuate.
“And the nuclear industry gets out of paying the full costs of a nuclear disaster. By official numbers, 150,000 Japanese people had to evacuate and leave everything behind. Those people are still without support or compensation for rebuilding their lives. This is despite Japan being one of only three countries that does not cap the liability of a nuclear reactor operator for the damages caused by an accident….”

Analysis: Japan reactor restart debate swells beyond nuclear frontline
OTSU, Japan | Fri Apr 13, 2012
… Edano is expected to visit Fukui soon as part of his effort to get at least two of the four reactors at Ohi up and running again in time for the approaching summer. Shiga's governor wants him to make a trip to her prefecture as well.
ALL RISKS, NO REWARDS
Lake Biwa spans over 670 sq km (260 sq m) and is home to trout and carp. In spring, fall and winter, the wind often blows from the north – from the plants in Fukui.
Unlike Fukui, and other prefectures that host nuclear plants, Shiga feels as though it shares the risks of the nuclear industry but reaps few if any of the rewards.
"In the case of Fukushima, the local communities that had hosted the plants used to see some positive elements through subsidies, employment and the economy," Kada said.
"Shiga has absolutely no benefits in that sense. If we were just to receive damage, then I cannot explain that to the residents," said the 61-year-old Kada, a former professor of environmental sociology. …

Mr Sarkozy admitted on Friday that he had not. "I'm not an engineer, I don't need to stick my nose in the situation at Fukushima," he said on I-tele."

We are Japanese people living in the UK. We are not activists or scientists, just normal citizens who want peace in the world and to protect our environment in a way that serves everybody. We are aware that there isn’t enough information in the main stream media in the UK about what’s going on in Fukushima, and we would like to share with you what we’ve found from Japanese web sites: information and news from scientists and doctors who are extremely worried about the safety of citizens, and from concerned freelance journalists and ordinary people. Since the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami, followed by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, we have been feeling a huge sense of loss… and have learned that nothing stays the same. Also we think that the Fukushima disaster was actually the result of many years of global political and economic corruption going on behind the scenes, and that the Japanese government was taken in by the worldwide drive for nuclear power, without learning the lessons of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings. (NB: English is not our native language, so please take this into account when reading this blog.)

Exelon Exec admits building reactors may require “sovereign” support from that state – Meaning on the backs of ratepayers not shareholders
Building reactors may require “the sovereign support of that state, which really means it’s on the backs of the ratepayers, not the backs of the shareholders,” Shattuck added. State support may include letting companies recover costs from customers during construction, providing loan guarantees or agreeing to buy power from the plant.

Nuclear welfare started with research and development. According to the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, since 1948 the federal government has spent more than $95bn (in 2011 dollars) on nuclear energy research and development (R&D). That is more than four times the amount spent on solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biofuels, and hydropower combined.

Fukushima – One year on – A TEPCO perspective.
13/04/2012
In December 2011, the Japanese government's Nuclear Disaster Response Headquarters declared that 'Step 2' of the Fukushima accident recovery plan had been completed. The primary reasons for this declaration were that the RPV (reactor pressure vessel) bottom temperatures and the PCV (primary containment vessel) internal temperatures were being kept below about 100 deg C, the release of radioactive materials was being sufficiently suppressed and kept under control, and the mid-term safety of the reactor circulating water cooling system had been secured.

The Nuclear Disaster That Could Destroy Japan – On the danger of a killer earthquake in the Japanese Archipelago
“(Nuclear) Power Corrupts
“A puzzle for our time: how is it possible for a person to be smart enough to make plutonium, and dumb enough actually to make it?….
“There are large seismic faults, capable of producing earthquakes at the 7 or 8 magnitude level, near each of Japan’s nuclear plants, including the reprocessing plant at Rokkasho. It is hard to believe that there is any nuclear plant that would not be damaged by a magnitude 8 earthquake.
“A representative case is the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant itself, where it has become clear that the fault under the sea nearby also extends inland. The Rokkasho plant, where the nuclear waste (death ash) from all the nuclear plants in Japan is collected, is located on land under which the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate meet. That is, the plate that is the greatest danger to the Rokkasho plant, is now in motion deep beneath Japan….”

400 Chernobyls
01/03/11
MIT engineer warns of nuclear Armageddon, urges preventative measures
"There are nearly 450 nuclear reactors in the world, with hundreds more either under construction or in the planning stages. Imagine what havoc it would wreak on our civilization, and the planet's ecosystems, if we were to suddenly experience not just one or two nuclear meltdowns, but 400. In this article, you will come to understand that unless we take significant preventative measures, this Apocalyptic scenario is not only possible, but probable…."

Didn't CB say that Fukushima was worth 400 Chernobyls?

Yes I did. But the MIT engineer has a very different image, and it is not related to what I said.

If Chernobyl is 300 times worse than one bomb on Hiroshima and Fukushima is 72,000 times worse, then that makes Fukushima 240 times worse than Chernobyl.
Independent: Why Fukushima is worse than Chernobyl; “Now the truth is coming out” — 72,000 times worse than Hiroshima & 1 million+ cancer deaths, says professor

Shirin Ebadi Interview: Iran’s Voice of Reason on Nuke Talks
by R.M. Schneiderman Apr 15, 2012 4:45 AM EDT
As the U.S. resumes nuke talks with Iran, the nation’s only Nobel Peace Prize winner, Shirin Ebadi, talks to R.M. Schneiderman about the pain inflicted by sanctions—and why Iranians can’t stand the enrichment program.
“…The people want to stop enrichment but the government doesn’t listen. Iran is situated on a fault line and people are scared of a Fukushima type of situation happening. We want peace, security, and economic welfare, and we cannot forgo all of our other rights for nuclear energy….”

World is ignoring most important lesson from Fukushima nuclear disaster
Fukushima's most important lesson is this: Probability theory (that disaster is unlikely) failed us. If you have made assumptions, you are not prepared. Nuclear power plants should have multiple, reliable ways to cool reactors. Any nuclear plant that doesn't heed this lesson is inviting disaster.

Anne, did you see this blantant Nuke industry propaganda opinion piece so willingly printed by the Los Angeles Times, written no less by a Harvard Nuke industry tool!
http://discussions.latimes.com/20/lanews/la-oe-ropeik-california-nuclear-risk-20120413/10
But be sure to read the comments! Southern Californians are starting to "get it" big time, given they have a Fukushima in waiting there at San Onofre. LOVE the smart comments by folks calling a spade a spade. They pull no punches!
I especially love "Archibald's" post at 9:58 am on April 13; he did a background search on the author (David Ropeik) and found he has been a paid consultant for several Nuke companies! No more pulling the wool over our eyes. LOL!!! People are finally waking up and we can no longer be fooled. Read the comments and enjoy! I know I did! They give me HOPE!
Good night!

Yay! Glad you like, Arclight!
Hmmm…Now if only the anti-nuke readers of the Guardian would start being more vocal and give Monbiot (sp?) a piece of their minds. Wouldn't THAT be a kick? ;-D LOL
