Since the nuclear companies DONT HAVE TO COVER any major accidents why should they worry? On going CHEAP fixes, finding old parts for reactors on EBAY -they are acting like its just a little genset running 24X7. No worry about making the systems SAFE, why? The insurance coverage required by the US government is only 300 Million, the US government will cover the rest. REALLY? Like BP damage was covered? Great warm feeling this gives me..

An excellent article from Steve Featherstone last year about Chernobyl with information of interest to Fukushima researchers:
http://m.popsci.com/science/article/2012-06/chernobyl-now
Excerpts: "we can expect a nuclear meltdown to occur every six years on average"
Page 2: "During the meltdown, the nuclear fuel in Chernobyl’s core turned into slag hot enough to burn through four feet of concrete and steel. The slag flowed like lava down steam pipes into the floors below, where it solidified into glassy black blobs straight out of a science-fiction movie. Scientists categorize these blobs as “fuel-containing materials,” or FCMs. About 200 tons of extremely radioactive FCMs are buried in the rubble of Unit 4, and they are the source of plutonium-laced “fuel dust.”"
"Many basement rooms are knee-deep in water that, as it evaporates, causes FCMs to oxidize and shed tiny particles of fuel dust into the air. Scientists estimate that the Shelter contains 33 tons of the stuff, a daily hazard and a disaster in the making."
Page 4: "Nuclear and radiological waste cannot be “cleaned up.” It cannot be eradicated. It can only be sealed in drums or concrete coffins and moved from one place to another, or buried in pits and surrounded by razor wire. In fact, no one yet has a plan for what to do with the FCMs."
SP: Most followup comments from pro-nukers debunking the article with old lies of "benefits of radiation, coal is worse, etc…" One adjective for them:…

Fears of child thyroid cancer after Fukushima nuclear disaster (Video)
30/11/2012
“Alerted by the precedent set after Chernobyl, Japanese doctors have set about testing all children who might have been exposed to radiation after last year's nuclear disaster at Fukushima. They're looking for signs of thyroid cancer, and out of the 100,000 children tested so far, 40% have shown some sign of abnormality. With parents struggling to get advice from the authorities, the Fukushima Medical University has had to organise meetings where information can be given out.”

That's a great National Geographic article you posted regarding the millions of fewer girls born due to nuclear radiation.
These quotes in the article stuck out:
>> "We do not know how much radioactivity was emitted through Fukushima and how it will spread throughout the world," Dr. Scherb said.
>> "Maybe it's confined to just Japan … but if it gets in the water and the air, it's possible that we could see a similar effect, especially on the West Coast of America."
>> "The findings challenge the conventional belief that exposure to nuclear radiation has no, or negligible, genetic effects in humans…"
At the Fukushima Symposium, Dr. Yablokov talked about there being at least one MILLION less girls born in areas around Chernobyl after Chernobyl's nuclear meltdown.

Thanks Mack, that is great news. As it says in the comments below the article, every town within 50 miles of a reactor should do this. Of course not all of the complaints would apply but many of them would. And the broader recognition of the NRC's history of failing to protect people from the hazards stemming from the negligence and corruption of the nuclear industry is universal. Hell, people in Europe could make a case against the NRC. I guess I need to look into state and local response plans for our reactors.

Notifying people in a timely manor might cause people to think.
If people 'think', then it might shed a negative light on the Nuclear Industry. Negativity regarding Radioactivity must be avoided at all cost. I'm pretty sure that's one of the main rules in the Nuclear playbook.
Informing people 'after the fact' always carries a lesser impact. So it's happened, what are you going to do? …and if you're already dead, then it really doesn't matter.

Fukushima isn’t Chernobyl?
by SARAH D. PHILLIPS
The March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami caused the deaths of approximately 16,000 persons, left more than 6,000 injured and 2,713 missing, destroyed or partially damaged nearly one million buildings, and produced at least $14.5 billion in damages. The earthquake also caused a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Japan’s eastern coast. After reading the first news reports about what the Japanese call “3.11,” I immediately drew associations between the accident in Fukushima and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986 in what was then the Soviet Union. This was only natural, since studying the cultural fallout of Chernobyl has been part of my life’s work as an anthropologist for the past 17 years….." http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/03/15/fukushima-isnt-chernobyl/

Read it and weep West Coast US residents. It may take years for significant levels of radiation to bio-accumulate but the radioactive releases have been ongoing for 2+ years. Some of it is being deposited by the air but much more is being transported by the ocean. The radioactive doses coming across the ocean are only now starting to arrive. As the surf deposits mist and debris on the beaches the levels of exposure will increase. By the time our government will admit the extent it will be too late. Your children's DNA will be forever changed. More cancers, more miscarriages, more strain on failing health care systems and social safety nets, more strain on the effected states budgets as worker productivity falls, companies relocate to non knuckle drager regions.
Gulf states are likely next to suffer noticeable effects as runoff from the plains states begins to bio-accumulate in waterways and the gulf. The impact of COREXIT on the Gulf will be magnified by the immune system weakening effect of the deposited radiation. Physical deformities will be the norm. No, you will probably not wake up tomorrow or next week and notice. It has been 25 years now since Chernobyl and still it is hard to prove the connection but undeniably linked to radiation exposure and genetic damage over generations.
Enjoy our new reality.

"Dear West Coast Senators:
We the undersigned are deeply concerned about the radiation danger from the ongoing disaster at the Japanese nuclear complex at Fukushima-Daiichi. We are asking you to conduct a thorough investigation of the continuing damage to West Coast states, and the potential danger of another catastrophe.
This would include a detailed inspection of the facility by a team of experts who are independent of the nuclear industry, as well as ongoing monitoring of West Coast and Hawaii water, air and food for radiation. We are especially concerned about making sure the site is safe in case of another huge earthquake, which is not unlikely.
Another big concern is pollution of the Pacific Ocean from ongoing discharge of radioactive water from the plant. Already, radioactive fish are migrating to the West Coast. Mammals at the top of the oceanic food chain are exhibiting strange symptoms, such as the epidemic of sea lion strandings in California."

I think Markey may just want to have Congress back up the Executuve Orders…allegedly regarding cyber security, which IMO is NOT the major worry for the grid going down ..more likely to be caused by a Carrington-tyoe event or EMP…unless of course WE do it, like Stuxnet. Nuclear and other vulnerable infrastructure is NOT connected to the Internet, which by implication…is part of this emphasis… Soooo, by inference, this initiative affects internet freedoms. Yes? From your link…On February 12, 2013, President Obama signed an executive order identifying sectors that will be considered critical infrastructure, requiring improvements in government-to-private sector information sharing, requiring the creation of a voluntary Cyber-security Framework for critical infrastructure entities, and directing agencies to reevaluate and improve their regulations based on the Cyber-security Framework. However, the Executive Order can not provide agencies with additional statutory authority with which to address cyber risks. That can only be accomplished through an act of Congress.
Well, then! An act of Congress can certainly shut us up.
